Apple faces backlash due to Casino ads on App Store product pages, takes it down

On October 25, Apple started displaying more advertisements at the bottom of app listings and in the Today tab on the App Store. After the ads went online, multiple developers complained about getting gambling ads under their "You Might Also Like" section when they had never installed any of that application.

Marco Arment, one of the developers, posted a screenshot on Twitter showing gambling advertisements on the App Store page for his podcast app Overcast. Other developers reported having the same issue and clarified that they weren't okay with casino ads on their product pages. As a result, Apple has told MacRumors that it has paused the ads related to gambling and a few other categories on App Store product pages. However, it is unknown when Apple will resume the service.

MacRumors noted that people had criticized Apple for serving casino ads as a whole and not just because they are within app listings. Florian Mueller, FOSS Patents blog, argued that by putting ads in app pages, Apple forces developers to buy those ad spaces, as competitors could use them and take potential customers away if they don't purchase them.

Apple has sold ads in the App Store for years, but the ads space in the Today tab is limited to a curated list of recommendations from Apple's editorial team. Meanwhile, the "You Might Also Like" section contained suggestion cards for similar apps, where ads display at the bottom of listings. In addition, since Apple allows advertisers to target categories different than their own, casino ads can show up just about anywhere on the App Store.

Is Apple working on a 16-inch iPad model Here is what we know about it

The Cupertino-based iPad maker Apple recently released two new tablet models, the iPad (10th generation) and the M2 iPad Pro. While the former is the successor of the entry-level iPad (9th generation), the latter comes as an upgrade to the most powerful iPad. However, just after the launch, information about another iPad has started to circle on the internet. As per a report by The Information, Apple could be working on a large-screen iPad. The iPad is expected to come out in the fourth quarter of 2023 and will be the biggest iPad Apple offers.

Get ready for the largest iPad Apple has to offer

Per the report, the largest iPad will come with a 16-inch screen, like the current MacBooks. When the iPad comes, it will bridge the gap between the iPads and the MacBooks offered by Apple. The 16-inch iPad will be targeted towards creative professionals, including artists, graphic designers, illustrators, and animators, among others.

Compared with the 12.9-inch iPad, the 16-inch iPad will provide much more space for the users to interact with the device. Although the report does not mention anything about the specifications of the 16-inch iPad, it is safe to assume that Apple will pack in top-of-the-line specifications in the device and charge a premium price for it.

It is important to mention that DSCC's Ross Young tipped earlier this year that the company is working on a 14-inch iPad Pro variant with a mini LED screen. Combining the report with Young's tip, it looks like Apple is gearing up to release two new iPad models next year, matching the sizes of MacBooks. If the speculations are true, a 14-inch iPad Pro and the 16-inch iPad will reduce the gap between Apple's tablets and laptops like never before. Apple currently powers the MacBook and the iPad Pro with its M2 chipset.

Apple is also said to be working on macOS for iPad Pro

Most recently, known tipster Majin Bu suggested that Apple is working on a macOS version for the M2 iPad Pro, codenamed 'Mendocino.' As per Bu, the macOS 14 for iPad Pro includes 25% larger macOS UI meant for touchscreens. Is there a chance that both the pieces of information: that Apple is working on a 16-inch iPad and a macOS version for large touchscreens; are connected in any way?

Well, it looks like the company is planning to surprise its fan big time by announcing a large iPad or macOS for iPad, or even better, both of them. Nevertheless, these are initial reports/tips, and Apple has not confirmed anything. Hence, readers should take the information with a pinch of salt.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro could come with A17 Bionic chipset and feature USB-C instead of Lightning

Last month, the Cupertino-based tech giant Apple released the iPhone 14 lineup, including the vanilla iPhone 14, the new entrant iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max. However, for the first time in a few years, Apple saved its latest A16 Bionic chipset for the Pro models, shipping the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Plus with last year’s A15 Bionic. Now, a report from TrendForce suggests that the company will follow a similar approach with the iPhone 15 series that is supposed to come out in 2023.

iPhone 15 expected specifications

As per the report, “Apple will maintain a four new model release schedule featuring two processors to further differentiate between the standard and the high-end models.” This means that Apple will release four new smartphones as a part of the iPhone 15 series. Based on the iPhone 14 series models, the iPhone 15 series could also come with two non-Pro variants and two Pro variants. Additionally, since the lineup is expected to come with two processors, there is a good chance that non-Pro iPhone 15 variants will ship with A16 Bionic, and the Pro iPhone 15 variants will feature the latest and the greatest A17 Bionic chipset.

From what it looks like, major improvements to the hardware will only be available on the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max, as the report also talks about 8GB of RAM on the Pro models. Besides this, Apple could make “camera specifications improvements, including upgrading its main camera to 8P and use a periscope lens in the Pro Max model.” Last but not least, the company’s 5G modem is not expected to debut until 2024, so Apple might stick with Qualcomm’s 5G modem for the iPhone 15 lineup.

Apple could shift to USB-C from the iPhone 15 series

Another highlight of the upcoming iPhone series is the switch from Lightning to USB-C ports. Earlier this week, the European Union announced that companies who wish to sell electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, headphones or any other gadgets would have to use a USB Type-C port. As a part of the law, all companies are given a directive to switch from Micro USB or Lighting ports to USB-C by 2024. Hence, Apple has no choice but to comply with the guidelines provided by the EU. However, the TrendForce report mentions USB-C ports in reference to the iPhone 15; hence, there is a good chance the iPhone 15 series will feature a USB-C port.

YouTube to split video content into 3 separate tabs

San Francisco, Oct 28 (IANS) Video streaming platform YouTube has announced a new update that will now split video content across all channel pages into three separate tabs for Shorts, live streams and long-form videos.

The update will make it easier for viewers to discover the kinds of content they are most interested in when exploring a creator's channel page, YouTube said in a blogpost.

In the Shorts tab, the viewer will only see Shorts. When the viewer is watching Shorts in the Shorts feed and navigate to a creator's channel from the feed, the viewer will be directed right to this new tab to keep enjoying Shorts.

In the Live tab, viewers will find all streams in this tab including any that are currently active, scheduled, or archived.

However, the Videos tab will continue to house long-form content.

Video users will no longer be able to view Shorts or live streams in the Videos tab in future, it added.

All devices will begin to display the new Shorts and Live tabs next to the classic Videos tab in the coming weeks, according to the company.

Meanwhile, YouTube recently announced that it is rolling out new design elements and product features, including options to zoom in and out for videos, to enhance the user experience on the platform.

The Battle Map Modes will also include Ground War and Ground War Invasion. Here is a list of all the following Core Map modes that will be available at launch:

Free-for-all: The first player to reach 30 eliminations ends the match, with the top three performers claiming victory.

Team Deathmatch: Use teamwork to eliminate enemy players and reach the score limit. The first team to obtain 75 eliminations wins the match.

Domination: A team has to take complete control of three zones marked by flags — A, B, and C. Captured zones accrue points over the course of one round. The first team to reach 200 points wins the match.

Hardpoint: One team is required to capture the Hardpoint and hold it against attack. The Hardpoint location rotates every minute, with the position of the next Hardpoint being indicated in the last 10 seconds of the previous zone. The first team to earn 250 points wins the match.

Defenders must prevent their extraction at all costs and hold them together in their spawn area until the round’s timer expires The first team to earn 500 points wins the match. Knock Out: Both teams fight over a bag of Cash located in the middle of the map. The team that holds the bag at the end of the round or that eliminates the entire enemy team wins the round.
