Samsung may unveil a foldable screen laptop with a virtual keyboard very soon

Samsung has been working on foldable devices for a few years now, with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 being largely lauded as a high-functioning device that isn’t compromised by the folding technology. Now, the Korean manufacturer is working on a folding laptop, based on the recent patents filed.

The upcoming folding laptop will not be the first of its kind to enter the market. Lenovo has come out with the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold with a folding display. Similarly, the recently launched ASUS Zenbook 17 Fold OLED has the largest folding screen available in the market at the moment. The patent for the same was filed all the way back in 2020.

How will the Samsung folding laptop work?

As per the patent that has been filed, the Samsung folding laptop will allow users to fold it in half, thereby decreasing its size and the storage space required. This laptop is likely to have an OLED panel (like most folding devices) and may have a high refresh rate.

While other folding laptops do come with virtual keyboards, Samsung’s offering will have a virtual trackpad along with the keyboard, which indicates that the laptop will have a touch screen. The schematics for this laptop indicate that the laptop will be quite thin when unfolded, and will come with dual USB Type C ports. These ports may support charging and data transferring functionalities. The laptop is also expected to have a regular selfie camera at the top of the display. The Samsung folding laptop may run on WIndows 11, and have a folding hinge that’s similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4.

Wondering if the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 is worth the hefty price tag? Read our review on the same.

Samsung could be working on a foldable laptop patent shows an ASUS Zenbook Pro Duo-like design

In the last few years, foldable devices have turned many heads. While all the leading consumer technology brands are giving foldables a chance in their assembly lines, the South Korean tech giant Samsung has led the foldable smartphone market. Although other companies have consumer-grade folding smartphones in the market, Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 are available globally, making them a convenient choice for most enthusiasts. However, when it comes to other categories, such as foldable laptops, other brands like ASUS and Lenovo are ahead of Samsung.

Samsung foldable laptop’s patent reveals design

Well, that could change soon as Samsung works on a full-size foldable laptop. According to a report by 91mobiles, the company filed for a foldable laptop back in 2020. The patent was filed with the United States Design Patent and published on November 22, 2022. The patent shows that the Samsung foldable laptop has an ASUS ZenBook Pro Duo-like design.

For those who are catching up, the ASUS Zenbook Pro Duo has a conventional display and a secondary touch screen towards the top of the keyboard. However, instead of using a secondary display, Samsung's foldable laptop has one display that folds toward the bottom of the regular screen area and extends the display, pushing the keys towards the edge of the lower side.

Additionally, a small part of the screen, right next to the keyboard, can be used as the trackpad. The publication has discovered multiple images of the design, all of which seem to depict a similar approach. As far as the user interface is concerned, it should show content in a continuous manner, i.e., the content should flow from the lower part of the screen (below the crease) to the upper part of the screen.

The design could have certain drawbacks

Hence, users could have a larger screen to interact with the device instead of having a secondary screen. Although the device approaches the concept of foldable laptops in a new way, there could be certain drawbacks. The images suggest that the laptop will have a full-size keyboard, but the keys could travel less due to less space.

Additionally, most users are accustomed to having a large trackpad at the centre of the chassis. Hence, having a smaller trackpad towards the right corner might make it difficult for some people to use it. Additionally, the foldable display will have a noticeable crease. However, the patent does not reveal any specifications of the Samsung foldable display; the laptop will likely be placed as a flagship product and hence, feature high-end components.

Phone numbers of half a billion WhatsApp users leaked online in one of the largest data breaches

According to a report by Cybernews, the phone numbers of more than half a billion WhatsApp users have been leaked and put online for sale. The publication claims to have investigated a data sample after discovering a "well-known hacking community forum" post that claimed to be selling a database of 487 million users. To give readers an idea, 487 million makes up a quarter of WhatsApp's two billion monthly active users.

The leaked dataset contains information of users from over 80 countries

The leaked data contains the phone numbers of users, which could be used for scamming people. The database contains the details of 44 million users from Egypt, 35 million users from Italy, 32 million from the USA, 28 million from Saudi Arabia, and about 6 million users from India, among others countries. "The dataset for sale also allegedly has nearly 10 million Russian and over 11 million UK citizens' phone numbers," adds the report.

The threat actor told the publication that the United States' dataset is being sold for $7,000, and the United Kingdom's dataset is being sold for $2,500. More often than not, such a database is often used by bad actors for vishing attacks. Upon request, the threat actor shared a data sample with the publication, which confirmed that all the phone numbers were true of existing WhatsApp users.

Users should stay alert against fake messages or calls

This is not the first time a Meta-owned platform has seen a data breach. Before this, the data of millions of Facebook users was being sold in a dark web forum. The Microsoft-owned professional networking platform LinkedIn recently witnessed a massive data breach. Although it is very difficult to check whether a user's data has been leaked, they should avoid responding to calls, messages or emails from strangers, especially those that contain a link, as it could redirect them to a malicious website.

Honda files trademark for new offering - the Motocompacto

Japanese car manufacturer, Honda, has filed a trademark for a tiny electric scooter known as Motorcompacto. The trademark filing has a fair amount of similarities with Honda’s Motocompo, an offering in the 1980s that was designed to fit inside the trunk of a car. As a result of this, the name of the trademark itself is quite similar to the original offering.

How is the Honda Motocompactor different from the Motocompo?

The Honda Motocompactor is an electric offering that will bear resemblance to the Honda Motocompo. It will be a foldable bike that can be placed in the trunk of the car and used during travels. It can also be used as if by those looking for electric bike offerings. This is not the first time that speculations about an e-bike based on the Motocompo have arisen. Honda filed a similar trademark in 2020. It was described as an offering similar to the Motocompo.

Now, another trademark for the Motocompacto has been filed at the Canadian Intellectual Property Office. In fact, there are now two separate filings in the Canadian case. The second filing is spelled as Moto Compacto. The description in this filing is that the product is related to Goods Land vehicles, namely self-balancing electric scooters; electrically-powered motor scooters. The application in Canada also has a logo design for the trademark featuring a compact scooter.

It is also believed that the new Honda Motorcompactor will be smaller than the predecessor as it won’t have a gas tank. There are likely to be other innovations too, keeping up with current trends.

Honda plans to launch 10 new electric scooter offerings by 2025.

Nothing Phone 1 gets another software update with battery percentage display for AirPods

Nothing has released a new software update for Phone (1) users. The update is called Nothing OS 1.1.7 and is already rolling out to Phone (1) users worldwide. The update comes with some bug fixes and improvements over the previous version. However, its highlight seems to be better support for Apple AirPods. The size of the update is about 80MB. Here is what's new in the Nothing OS 1.1.7.

How to update Nothing Phone (1) to Nothing OS 1.1.7?

Checking in a Phone (1) unit available, the Nothing OS 1.1.7 update was available. As mentioned earlier, the new feature released with this update is the "battery percentage display for AirPods." Although the ability comes as an experimental feature, it works fine. To install the latest Nothing OS update, head to the Settings menu, scroll down, select System, and tap on System Update. There, tap on the 'Download and Install' button towards the bottom right corner.

What’s new in Nothing OS 1.1.7?

Now, let's talk about the Nothing OS 1.1.7 update improvements. First, the company has equipped the update with an October/November security patch. Then it improves OS fluidity and reduces system stutters. Another point mentioned in the update notes says that it adjusts the "thermal threshold to better balance performance and temperature."

Users who complain about poor microphone quality while recording videos should update their Nothing Phone (1) immediately, as the latest system update comes with improved audio quality. Last but not least, the new version shows more accurate battery status. Talking about the bug fixes in the update: it resolves "an issue causing WhatsApp notifications to be unresponsive" on the lock screen.

Carl Pei, the founder of the London-based consumer tech company, teased the Nothing OS 1.5.0, based on Android 13, a couple of days ago. However, Pei did not say when the update would be available for the Nothing Phone (1) users. Previously, Pei said that Nothing would focus on providing a quality experience, indicating that the company might not be among the first to provide Android 13. Nevertheless, the image shared by Pei suggests that the latest Nothing OS built is in the works, and users should expect the update to be available soon.
