You can now search for verified government contacts via Truecaller

Truecaller has announced the launch of a new government director available within its app to help people find verified contact details of government officials. The idea is to ensure that citizens can contact officials. This digital government directory has been created to enhance the trust between people and local government rulers, protect them from fraud and spam, and empower citizens to take an active role in local governance. While Truecaller currently has over 240 million users in India, this service may lead to a spike in numbers.

The new Truecaller feature lets you access verified government  contacts

Why has Truecaller launched this feature?

This new feature will offer citizens better access to law enforcement agencies, helplines, educational institutes, embassies, hospitals, and other critical government departments across the whole country.

According to the app, the contact details have been taken directly from official government sources to ensure that they are accurate. The main aim is to help streamline access to pertinent government representations and make things easier for users in India.

Truecaller revealed that the most effective scams that occur through random numbers are carried out by impersonating different government officials. As the average citizen does not have the contact details of these officials or their offices, they have no way to verify who is actually calling them. The directory should help reduce such cases of fraud, while also allowing customers access to the numbers if they require them. Phone calls from a verified government number will appear with a green background and a blue tick mark to indicate that the number is an authentic one.

Truecaller is currently working with different departments of the government in order to expand its directory and make it as comprehensive as possible. The next phase will include adding the contact details of representatives who are at the municipal and district levels.

— Madhav Sheth (@MadhavSheth1) December 6, 2022 Realme UI 4.0 features

One of the new and noticeable UI elements would be Realme UI 4.0’s card-style layout, which arranges information across the interface in customizable ‘cards’.

Always-on-display on Realme UI 4.0 gets interactive music player controls which means you don’t have to unlock the phone lock screen to adjust the playback.

You can even personalize the AOD with your expression-based Bitmoji emojis.

So, that pretty much addresses the design and interaction aspects of Realme UI 4.0.

Realme UI 4.0 Auto Pixelate

As the name suggests, Auto Pixelate lets you automatically pixelate personal information on screenshots.

Lastly, for security, you have a Private Safe equipped with the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES).

There are many more small yet ‘could-be-useful’ features sprinkled throughout the new Realme software. We’ll get to know them on December 8, which is when both the software and the phones carrying them will launch. So, stay tuned.

Musks Neuralink probed for killing 1500 animals in clinical trials: Can this be justified

Elon Musk’s company Neuralink has reportedly come under the scanner of a federal investigation pertaining to a massive number of animal deaths during tests and clinical research. We will address what resulted in this, but more importantly, if such tests should even happen.

First, here’s what happened at Neuralink.

Neuralink: What are they doing and why are animals being used in tests?

Neuralink is involved in developing a brain-machine interface that would theoretically allow you to control a computer with your human brain. Well, it is not just about lofty and cool applications, but there are aims to help the paralyzed walk and blind people to see the world around them. There are plans to even aid people with Alzheimer's and dementia in getting a better grasp of their world.

Now, for all these things to work, a chip will be implanted inside your skull that communicates with the machine via neural signals. And since this is a technically difficult and dangerous task, Neuralink is currently doing tests on animals and as part of these tests, around 1,500 animals, comprising monkeys, sheep, and pigs have been killed since 2018 when Neuralink began its research.

Animals are usually used in clinical research as they can be lethal or result in some uncalled-for health effects which most people wouldn’t want to be risked on humans.

Every year, thus, more than 110 million animals of different kinds get killed in U.S. labs for various tests and trials.

That brings us to the most important question:

Should animals be killed for the sake of science?

The reason we overlook animal deaths in the pursuit of science is the belief and empirical evidence that such tests contribute to scientific advancements and achievements. For instance, research in cows resulted in the world’s first vaccine and helped us put an end to smallpox. Studies in monkeys, mice, and dogs have apparently resulted in the discovery of the polio vaccine. Similarly, we have got drugs for cancer, AIDS, hepatitis, malaria, and Alzheimer’s happened thanks to tests on primates.

Or so we believe.

A simple Google research will reveal research papers and published articles that discount the linkage between animal tests and the discovery of cures.“Patients and physicians should remain cautious about extrapolating the finding of prominent animal research to the care of human disease … poor replication of even high-quality animal studies should be expected by those who conduct clinical research,” warns The Journal of the American Medical Association.

A sentiment shared by former National Cancer Institute Director, Dr Richard Klausner who remarked, “We have cured mice of cancer for decades, and it simply didn’t work in humans.”

So, things may not be as what regular folks assume. Well, in a focus group experiment, it was shown that naive people can turn a blind eye to animal cruelty for the sake of science.

Moreover, when authoritative figures push you to hasten the research for whatever reason, things could go haywire.

Back in 2021, Musk said, "First @Neuralink product will enable someone with paralysis to use a smartphone with their mind faster than someone using thumbs," but over the years, the company has time and again failed to hit the deadlines. In the recent Neuralink 2022 event, he announced the human trials could kick off in 6 months. So, the pressure is on him, his employees, and needless to say the animals.

The animals could struggle in the test, succumb to diseases, die in the process or by accident, or be euthanized. Well, there are other ethical alternatives like rehabilitation but are not always considered. In Musk’s defence, he has always mandated the best life possible for lab animals prior to their euthanization.

In any case, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is currently regulating animal care over at Neuralink and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) handles the verification of medical devices and trials. The company is being probed by USDA under the U.S. Animal Welfare Act. 1966.

Over the course of the last few months, we’ve seen plenty of leaked reports surrounding the Samsung Galaxy A14 5G. Most of its specifications have already been revealed (though not confirmed), however, the missing piece of the puzzle - the launch timelines and corresponding countries - was always kept tightly under wraps. Today’s leak has confirmed that the Samsung Galaxy A14 5G will be launched in India fairly soon.

Samsung Galaxy A14 5G launch

Samsung has a support page for the Samsung Galaxy A14 5G

Samsung’s official India website now has a support page dedicated to the Samsung Galaxy A14 5G, and this indicates that the smartphone will be launching in India soon. More often than not, brands tend to roll out support pages for smartphones right before their launch, and the fact that Samsung has now made this page live could mean that the launch is almost upon us. The support page does not offer any concrete information though.

Samsung Galaxy A14 5G specifications (rumoured)

Previous leaks have indicated that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy A14 5G will be equipped with a 6.8-inch LCD display with a Full HD+ resolution. Based on Geekbench listings, the smartphone may be available in two variants, one with an Exynos 1330 chipset and one with a MediaTek Dimensity 700 SoC. Geekbench scores also show that one of the smartphones will be available with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The same will run on Android 13.

Samsung Galaxy A14 5G launch

The Samsung Galaxy A14 5G also received its FCC certification, confirming that it comes with a 5,000 mAh battery capacity, USB Type-C port, Bluetooth 5.2, sub-6GHz 5G, and Wi-Fi 6.

Leaked renders of the smartphone have shown that there will be a triple camera setup, with a 50MP primary shooter.

Samsung Galaxy A14 5G price

The Samsung Galaxy A14 5G is believed to be priced slightly higher than its predecessor, which was the Samsung Galaxy A13 ( priced at ₹15,999). However, this will be confirmed once the phone actually launches.
