New images of the Google Pixel Tablet show off the expected specs and design

Android tipster Kuba Wojciechowski has recently revealed that there will be a single version of the Pixel Tablet, as opposed to earlier speculations regarding there being vanilla and Pro versions. The concept of the Pixel Tablet was first revealed at the I/O 2022 event in May 2022. Wojciechowski has posted images of the first-generation Tensor chip and the Tensor G2 chips.

Google Pixel Tablet updates

It was believed that the Pixel Tablet and Pixel Tablet Pro are called “Tangor” and “Tangorpro”, respectively. However, according to Wojciechowski, the Tangor project has been cancelled. We may only see variants of the Pixel Tablet that will be equipped with the Tensor G2 chip. The tablet is also claimed to offer 8 GB of Samsung LPDDR5 RAM and 256 GB of Kioxia UFS storage. It may also come with a side-mounted fingerprint scanner.

I have also been provided with a few photos of the device. pic.twitter.com/ctKWQoVDCT

— Kuba Wojciechowski(@Za_Raczke) January 26, 2023 Google Pixel Tablet specifications (expected)

According to the tipster, the Google Pixel Tablet will have a 2560 x 1600 pixel resolution. This display comes from China Star Optoelectronics (CSOT) and is also supported by a Richtek RT4539 six-channel LED driver. Based on this, we can assume that the Google Pixel Tablet will not have an AMOLED screen. The screen is also believed to be an 11-inch one.

Finally, it is also believed that there will be two types of docks for this tablet. The Yuzu / Y4 dock will support charging while the Korlan / K6 dock will have a speaker.

Google will be making serious changes to the way Android operates

Google has announced that it will let device makers in India license their own apps for pre-installation and will also let users pick their own default search engines. This comes after the Supreme Court announced antitrust directives last week. The court also rejected Google’s challenge against Competition Commission of India ruling stating that the tech giant abused its market position. Google is now changing the way the Android system operates.

"Implementation of these changes across the ecosystem will be a complex process and will require significant work at our end and, in many cases, significant efforts from partners, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and developers," Google announced in a blog post.

Google antitrust

What is the Competition Commission of India ruling?

Counterpoint Research states that 97% of 600 million smartphones in India run on Android. The same research states that 75% of the 550 million smartphones in Europe run on Android. The CCI ruling states that Google exploits its dominant position in the market. It also asked the company to remove restrictions placed on device makers related to the pre-installation of apps.

It also fined Google $161 million (which is around Rs. 1,300 crores).

Google tried to block these directions by warning the Supreme Court that its Android ecosystem would be hampered due to this. The company explained that it would have to change its arrangements with over 1,100 device manufacturers and app developers.

What’s happening now?

The Supreme Court dismissed Google’s plea and asked the company to pay the fine by March 31st.

"We continue to respectfully appeal certain aspects of the CCI's decisions," Google said. The tech giant is working on changing its Android system operations.
