WWDC 2023: 5 watchOS 10 features that will supercharge the Apple Watch

The most anticipated tech event of the year is here to leave you overwhelmed with the new improvements and announcements in the Apple hardware and software lineups. The Apple Annual Conference WWDC 2023 is to take place today at 10:30pm where CEO Cook will be inaugurating the event.

The event is expected to release multifolds of announcements with new MacBook models, iOS 17, macOS 14, tvOS 17, watchOS 10 and the highly anticipated first ever augmented reality headset for the brand along with xrOS.

The Apple watchOS 10 is anticipated to reset a lot of settings with multi facet improvements in the Apple watch system. It is claimed that the system will see the biggest upgrades in a long time and would not just be a refreshed version of the previous system. Let’s take a look at what new features the new watchOS system has to offer.

Also read: WWDC 2023: What time and how to watch Apple’s event tonight?

Expected upgrades on watchOS10 1) Multiple Device Pairing

Uptil now the Apple watch with watchOS 9 could only be paired with an iPhone, however with the arrival of watchOS 10 the watch is now anticipated to be connected with iPad, Mac, and of course, iPhones as always.

2) Centralised Health Updates

The tech giant is taking the baton forward with AI incorporation in the devices where an AI coach will be linked with the Apple watch and the Health App on the iPhone giving suggestions to the user based on the collected data. The project is apparently named ‘Quartz’. The initiative is primarily built in for wellness and health support and is anticipated to operate efficiently on the iPhone as well as the Apple watch.

3) User Interface

Mark Gurman at Bloomberg suggested that the tech giant is narrowing the focus down on the Apple Watch Series 9 as there are very few anticipated hardware releases this WWDC and having said that the brand wants to have notable changes in the user interface for the series. The brand is primarily working on widgets for activity tracking, weather, stock tickers, calendar among others.

4) Digital Crown

The apple watchOS may also bring in new features for the Digital Crown, where watchOS 9 used the setting for taking the system back to the home screen, the new upgrade might use the function for accessing the new widgets in the system. It can be said that the feature is similar to Apple watch’s ‘Glance’ feature.

5) Journaling App Connection iOS17 and watchOS10

There have been speculations that the iOS17 might get a new journaling app, the features are still under the veil. However, there are reports that this app can be linked with the Apple watchOS 10 and clearly this app was not available for watchOS 9. These were the changes that can be expected for the watchOS 10 compared to watchOS 9 however, the information is to be validated at the WWDC conference and should be, just for a few hours now, taken with a grain of salt. Motorola Edge 40 Review: An impressive mid-range phone with undeniable panache

Motorola is generating some serious buzz for its smartphones, all because they’re giving the users what they want. A clean software experience, stylish and lightweight design, dependable performance, and fast charging to name a few. The Motorola Edge 40 is my favourite mid-range all-rounder so far this year. Not because of its performance chops – there are faster performers – but because it offers users a holistic experience with very few compromises.

Motorola phones have garnered quite a bit of acclaim in the past few years for two primary reasons – Motorola’s bloatware-free MyUX skin and the slim and lightweight form factor of most of its phones. In fact, the Motorola Edge 30 which launched last year was THE thinnest 5G smartphone in the world! Cut to 2023, and we’ve got the successor of the Edge 30 at the Digit Test Lab. Meet the Motorola Edge 40, which comes with a flurry of improvements over its predecessor including a faster chipset, IP68 dust and water resistance, improved battery life, and faster charging. However, this comes at the cost of a more bulky form factor than the Edge 30. Regardless, it continues to be one of the lightest 5G smartphones on the market – now with a more premium design as well. So, at ₹29,999, is the new Motorola Edge 40 worth your money and how does it perform compared to the competition? Let’s delve right into it.

Motorola Edge 40 Review: Build and Design

Let’s get the bad out of the way first. As I mentioned before, the Motorola Edge 40 is no longer as slim and lightweight as its predecessor. The Edge 40 is available in three colourways – Nebula Green, Lunar Blue, and Eclipse Black – out of which the Green and Black variant sport premium-looking vegan leather backs while the Blue variant sports a matte PMMA (plastic) back. The Nebula Green leather variant I got for review weighs 171 g, which is 16 grams more than the good ol’ Edge 30. It is also thicker – 7.6 mm compared to 6.8 mm.

Motorola Edge 40 Review: Build and design

If you keep the Motorola Edge 30 out of the equation, this is still an extremely sleek 5G phone. In fact, Motorola claims that the Edge 40 is the “slimmest and lightest 5G phone with IP68 water protection”. And that’s the key factor here. The Edge 40 now comes with IP68 dust and water resistance, which was missing on the Edge 30 (the phone was simply dubbed water-repellent). For us, this tradeoff for a better design and IP rating doesn’t seem too bad, but you be the judge for yourself.

Motorola Edge 40 Review: Build and design

Speaking of the premium design, the Motorola Edge 40 looks very svelte. There’s a certain wow factor that is often missing at this price point. You get a soft vegan leather finish, an aluminium frame, and the classy-looking camera module that blends into the rest of the rear panel. The inconspicuous Motorola logo looks great as well and the rounded edges of the front display and the back panel add to the premium factor. Also, due to the rounded edges and lightweight design, this is one of the most comfortable phones to hold.

Motorola Edge 40 Review: Display

Motorola has jammed pack its display with impressive specifications. For example, it comes with a 144 Hz refresh rate pOLED display that rivals most of the competitors in this price range. Motorola has added a curved display to the Edge 40 which makes it look very sleek and stylish, but it could provoke a lot of accidental touches. The 6.55-inch pOLED display sports an FHD+ resolution and HDR10+ support. There’s support for Edge ambient lighting as well, to notify users about calls and messages. I recall this feature being quite popular on older Samsung flagships and it’s nice to see this make a comeback.

Motorola Edge 40 Review: Display

The display is bright, vibrant and crisp. I also found the viewing angles to be excellent. Sunlight visibility is no problem since the display can get sufficiently bright – even for outdoors usage. I tested the phone’s display with a LUX meter and got a reading of 801 nits under direct sunlight, using Auto Brightness, which is not a bad number at all. Motorola claims 1200 nits of peak brightness though, and I didn’t get a result anywhere close to that number.

Motorola Edge 40 Review: Dolby Atmos

The Motorola Edge 40 sports an impressive display, but there’s one hiccup. The 144 Hz refresh rate support can be used but at the cost of severe battery drain. This is because Moto’s Adaptive Refresh rate mode on this phone doesn’t go all the way up to 144 Hz and remains capped at 120 Hz. So, if you want to experience 144 Hz – a feature you’ve paid money for – you will have to keep it toggled on at all times, which can severely deplete the phone’s battery life. We hope Motorola can fix this with a software update in the near future. That aside, it is a good display for content consumption with support for Dolby Atmos sound as well.

Motorola Edge 40 Review: Performance

The Motorola Edge 40 is the world’s first phone to feature the spanking-new MediaTek Dimensity 8020 SoC. It essentially sports the same core configuration as the older Dimensity 1100 but in my testing, I found that it scored higher in benchmarks, so there could be some extra tuning done. The Edge 40 comes packing 8 GB LPDDR4X RAM and 256 GB UFS 3.1 storage. There’s no expandable storage though, which is disappointing.

Let’s start with synthetic benchmarks. I decided to pit the Motorola Edge 40 against similarly-priced competitors including the POCO F5, iQOO Neo 7, Samsung Galaxy A34, and OPPO Reno 8T. In AnTuTu, the phone sits somewhere right in the middle of the pack. It scored an impressive 6,47,389 which is not as blazing fast as the gaming mid-range champs – Poco F5 and iQOO Neo 7 – but it is considerably better than the Samsung Galaxy A34 and OPPO Reno 8T.

Motorola Edge 40 Review: Performance

I also ran GeekBench, and in the Single Core test, the Motorola Edge 40 squeaked out 1,112 points while in the Multi-Core test, it got a score of 3,557. Here, it still lags behind the POCO F5 considerably but it manages to beat the iQOO Neo 7 in the Single Core test, surprisingly! In PCMarkWork, the phone coughs up the highest score of the lot, which means it will be a reliable performer in daily workload tasks such as sheets, web browsing, photo and video editing, and more. All this while not throttling much! In the CPU Throttling Test, the phone throttled to only 83 per cent of its peak performance after 30 minutes, which is fantastic.

Motorola Edge 40 Review: Performance

Moving on to GPU tests, the Motorola Edge 40 continues to impress. It got a score of 4,479 in 3D Mark Wild Life Extreme which is only rivalled by the iQOO Neo 7 (POCO F5 didn’t support this test). The phone proved its mettle in GFXBench too with impressive scores across the board. Despite these scores, the Motorola Edge 40 is not the best option for gaming at this price. That title would have to go to the POCO F5 and the iQOO Neo 7. The phone got considerably warm after 15-30 minutes of Call of Duty: Mobile which is when we began to notice a couple of frame skips.

Motorola Edge 40 Review: Performance

Motorola Edge 40 Review: Performance

In general, though, the Motorola Edge 40 is a solid and reliable performer under ₹30,000. Multitasking is a smooth affair and the phone can handle most of what you throw at it, with ease. Running Android 13 out of the box, Moto’s MyUX software is largely bloatware-free and very easy to navigate. There are also perks such as Ready For, Family Spaces and Moto Secure with ThinkSheild. Ready For is particularly handy since it allows you to connect your phone wirelessly to a TV or display to play games, make video calls, and more, while still having a fully-functioning phone on the side. Overall, a massive thumbs up for the Motorola Edge 40’s performance and UI, if you’re not a hardcore gamer.

Motorola Edge 40 Review: Cameras

In 2023, when smartphone OEMs everywhere are packing on more and more cameras in their smartphones, Motorola has actually removed a lens from the Motorola Edge 40’s rear camera setup compared to its predecessor. The phone features a 50 MP primary sensor with OIS support, but the kicker here is its wide aperture of f/1.4. This allows for great low-light pictures and close-up shots with excellent natural depth of field.

Motorola Edge 40 Review: Camera

You’ve also got a secondary 13 MP shooter which doubles as an ultrawide camera and a macro shooter. The Moto Edge 30 had a 50 MP ultrawide camera though, so this is a bit of a downgrade. Nevertheless, the added functionality of a good-quality macro camera makes the tradeoff seem manageable.

In my time with the Motorola Edge 40, the primary camera clicked detailed shots with decent dynamic range in daylight. Shadows can appear a bit crushed at times though. Also, there’s an obvious amount of over-saturation that makes the shots look more social-media-ready but also a bit unrealistic. Nevertheless, if you like poppy colours, this will be right up your wheelhouse. Additionally, the primary camera also shoots impressive portrait shots with very natural skin tones, good detail, and solid edge detection. Overall, this is an impressive primary camera in daylight, if you ignore some small nitpicks.

Motorola Edge 40 Review: Camera samples

Ultrawide photos have great dynamic range and surprisingly, the colour science between the primary and ultrawide camera is very close, which I love to see. Macro photos taken with this lens also come out looking surprisingly detailed. Low-light shots from this lens are quite grainy but the primary camera can take some amazingly detailed nighttime shots.

Motorola Edge 40 Review: Camera samples

Motorola Edge 40 Review: Camera samples

As for selfies, in good lighting, you will get solid results with little to complain about. However, if the lighting is even slightly unfavourable, the selfie camera can boost the highlights a bit too much. In low light, the selfie camera does have quite a bit of noise as well. So, you won’t get consistently great performance with the Motorola Edge 40’s selfie shooter.

Motorola Edge 40 Review: Battery life

Battery life was one area of concern on the Motorola Edge 30 since it had a tiny 4,020 mAh cell. This time around, most of those worries are dispelled since the Edge 40 now sports a 4,400 mAh battery while still housing a similarly-sized screen with the same refresh rate. So, naturally, the battery life of the Motorola Edge 40 has definitely improved.

Motorola Edge 40 Review: Battery

In our 4K video loop test, the Motorola Edge 40 lasted a healthy 13 hours and 24 minutes. So, it outperforms the POCO F5 and the Samsung Galaxy A34 here. Similarly, it only lost 4 per cent battery when streaming Netflix for half an hour and dropped by 5 per cent after playing Call of Duty: Mobile for 15 minutes. This is not the best in the segment, but it is a solid improvement.

Motorola has also bumped up charging speeds with this one. You get a super fast 68 W charger in the box that tops up the phone from empty to full in just 49 minutes. In fact, 0-50 per cent happens at a much faster rate. Not just that, Motorola also added wireless charging to this segment, which is a true rarity. You can wirelessly charge this phone up to 15 W on any Qi-certified wireless charger.

Motorola Edge 40 Review: Verdict

Motorola is generating some serious buzz for its smartphones, all because they’re giving the users what they want. A clean software experience, stylish and lightweight design, dependable performance, and fast charging to name a few. The Motorola Edge 40 is my favourite mid-range all-rounder so far this year. Not because of its performance chops – there are faster performers – but because it offers users a holistic experience with very few compromises. The new MediaTek Dimensity 8020 breezes through everyday tasks and Moto’s MyUX skin is a pleasure to use mainly due to low bloatware. The Motorola Edge 40 also wins due to its IP68 build, wireless charging support, good primary camera, and a seriously premium design that makes it look like it is worth at least ₹45,000-₹50,000. All of this at just ₹29,999! Motorola has truly found a recipe for success with the fantastic Edge 40!

Best 5G phones from OnePlus 2023 in India: OnePlus 11, Nord CE 3 Lite with price and features

OnePlus started off as a niche smartphone brand that catered to the enthusiasts out there. Now, the company has transitioned into a more mass-market brand with products across price segments, starting with budget smartphones like the OnePlus Nord CE 3 Lite 5G, going up to proper flagships like the latest OnePlus 11 that was launched earlier this year. With 5G becoming a more of a standard feature in the market, almost every OnePlus smartphone launched in the last two years (2022 and 2023) comes with 5G connectivity. Be it a budget phone like the OnePlus Nord CE 2 Lite 5G, a mid-range OnePlus Nord 2T, or high-end smartphones like the OnePlus 11R or OnePlus 10 Pro, and the likes. Here are some of the best 5G smartphones from OnePlus in our market currently:

1. OnePlus 11 5G

The OnePlus 11 is the latest flagship from the brand. The OnePlus 11 is powered by Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, which is good for an AnTuTu score of about 1,200,000, which is one of the highest on any smartphone this year. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 also enables the OnePlus 11 to offer 18 5G bands, including all high, low, and mid frequency bands. Apart from this, the smartphone comes with a nice and immersive 6.7-inch Fluid AMOLED LTPO3 display with a 120Hz refresh rate and a QHD+ resulitoon. The smartphone also has a triple rear camera setup that includes a primary 50-megapixel Sony IMX890 shooter, a 48-megapixel ultra-wide angle shooter, and a 32-megapixel telephoto shooter for portraits and optical zoom. We also get a 5,000mAh battery with support for 100W fast charging, but this year's OnePlus 11 misses out on wireless charging. Price: Rs 56,999 onwards

2. OnePlus 11R 5G

The OnePlus 11R 5G is also this year's new offering from the brand. The smartphone is very similar to last year's OnePlus 10T 5G, which was launched in the second half of last year. The smartphone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, paired with up to 16GB RAM. This makes the OnePlus 11R 5G good enough for a score of 838,309 on AnTuTu, making the smartphone touch flagship territory in terms of last year's standards. The OnePlus 11R also comes with a nice an vibrant 6.74-inch AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate. The display also supports HDR, which makes watching content on the OnePlus 11R a pleasing experience. In terms of 5G coverage, we get nine 5G bands on the OnePlus 11R. These are the n1/n3/n5/n8/n28A/n40/n41/n77/n78 5G bands. Apart from this, we get a pretty standard triple rear camera setup that includes a 50-megapixel primary Sony IMX890 shooter, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide angle shooter, and a 2-megapixel macro lens. Price: Rs 39,999 onwards

3. OnePlus Nord CE 3 Lite 5G

The OnePlus Nord CE 3 Lite 5G is the latest sub-Rs 20,000 offering from the brand. The smartphone comes powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 chipset paired with up to 8GB of RAM, which can put out an AnTuTu score of almost 400,000 (399997). The smartphone also comes with pretty decent 5G coverage as we get the same amount of 5G bands as the OnePlus 11R. There are 9 5G bands (n1/n3/n5/n8/n28A/n40/n41/n77/n78) on the OnePlus Nord CE 3 Lite 5G, which is good enough for a good overall 5G coverage. The smartphone gets a 6.72-inch IPS LCD display with a 120Hz refresh rate. Further, we get a triple rear camera setup, with a primary 108-megapixel shooter, a 2-megapixel depth sensor, and a 2-megapixel macro shooter. Apart from that, we also get a 5,000mAh battery on the OnePlus Nord CE 3 Lite 5G, with support for 67W fast charging.

Price: Rs 19,999 onwards

4. OnePlus 10T 5G

The OnePlus 10T 5G is basically the OnePlus 11R from last year. The smartphone has pretty similar specifications as its more recent sibling, but also has some things that the newer OnePlus 11R misses. This includes faster charging at 150W, a 3D cooling system, and more. The OnePlus 10T has 8 5G bands, which is not the best in its segment, but enough for all kinds of users. There is also a triple rear camera setup that includes a primary 50-megapixel Sony IMX766 shooter, a 4,800mAh battery, which is good for a day easily, paired with 150W fast charging, which is one of the fastest charging speeds on any smartphone this year. Furthermore, the OnePlus 10T 5G also has a flagship-level Fluid AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate and 394ppi pixel density, which makes the smartphone's display super detailed and sharp. Price: Rs 44,999 onwards

5. OnePlus 10 Pro

The OnePlus 10 Pro was last year's flagship from the brand and the smartphone still holds up among the top players in the segment. In fact, last year's OnePlus 10 Pro had many premium features that have been given a miss this time around. These include wireless charging, an IP rating, and a nice metal body. The OnePlus 10 Pro is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset paired with up to 12GB of RAM. The smartphone offers its users a total of 16 5G bands, which is still one of the highest on any smartphone. The device also has a nice 5,000mAh battery to support the 5G usage, and we get 80W fast charging, along with 50W fast wireless charging. There is also a triple rear camera setup that includes a 48-megapixel primary Sony IMX789 shooter, a 50-megapixel ultra-wide angle shooter, and an 8-megapixel telephoto lens. Up front, the OnePlus 10 Pro comes with a 32-megapixel selfie shooter.

Price: Rs 55,999 onwards

3 big iOS 17 features that will improve Apples mobile experience at WWDC 2023

Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference is taking place this week, and while the whole world is waiting for Apple’s mixed-reality headset to appear, iOS 17 is pretty much the focus of the entire developer focused event.

Quite a lot of iOS 17 features have been teased from various Apple analysts, updates that will enhance iPhone and other usability aspects related to Apple’s mobile operating system. We’ve put together three main things we feel Apple’s going to make announcements related to iOS 17:

1) Apple focus on extensive care of your health

Apple is looking into their user's health extensively and iOS 17 is heavy on how they are turning the iPhone into a multi-layered personal health and fitness tracker for every user. Apple is allegedly working on a journaling app which enables logging in thoughts and activities, which will further get analysed to get a hold on users’ daily habits.

NEW: Apple plans an AI-powered Health and Wellness digital coaching service for next year. Plus, the Health app is coming to the iPad this year alongside new features for mood and emotion tracking and vision condition management. https://t.co/V9n8pIgfCi

— Mark Gurman (@markgurman) April 25, 2023

Apple is also adding a feature to the Health App which will have a mood tracker asking you day to day questions and then analyse your mood.

Also Read: Not one or two, but three new Macs may launch at WWDC 2023

2) Turn iPhone into smart home display

As per expectations, iOS 17 may also have some improvements related to screen functionality. Apple is working on some iPhone lock screen interface which might just work as a smart home display to control and pair with the likes of Google Next or Amazon Echo.

NEW: Apple is planning a new smart-display-like mode in iOS 17, a new interface for information and notifications when an iPhone is locked and in landscape mode, as a major new feature. It’s a potential precursor to a standalone Apple smart home hub. https://t.co/mgFsu4nQ6x

— Mark Gurman (@markgurman) May 24, 2023

When you turn the phone horizontal, the interface will show "information such as calendar appointments, the weather and notifications."

3) Apple Wallet will get an update in iOS 17

Apple Wallet is expected to get an update but what the upgrade will be exactly still isn't clear. Does Apple want to push forward some financial aid to its devices perhaps? Jest aside, Apple’s Wallet app getting an upgrade during WWDC 2023 sounds like a plan.

— Michael  (@NTFTWT) May 15, 2022

These are some of the very important features that we are definitely expecting to be featured in iOS 17. But again, these haven't been confirmed by Apple yet and we have to wait for WWDC 2023 for Apple to confirm it all.

BGMI streaming isnt very popular, people dont like Chicken Dinner anymore

Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) is back in India and has also started off with its launch party on June 1, 2023. The battle royale game was banned last July due to different security concerns under the Section 69A of the Information Technology Act. But now the game is available on both Android and iOS in India.

It isn’t the same old BGMI anymore, as the game has gone through a lot of changes made by the developers. And turns out, it’s having an impact on the viewership of the game and its overall popularity as well.

BGMI

According to the AFK Gaming report, which would worry Krafton (the developer of BGMI), the return of BGMI hasn’t led to increased viewership of the game streams on YouTube or Twitch – in fact numbers are down, they’ve gone all haywire. It doesn't seem like people are still crazy about the game as they were earlier before the ban.

AFK Gaming has revealed a report which shows the decline in viewership of BGMI livestreams from 2021 to 2023. The report shows that BGMI live streams by any popular gamer in India has one-fourth viewers than what it used to have.

There are gamers and streamers in India who are very famous like: Mortal, Dynamo, Scout, Jonathan. The following table shows the decline in their BGMI stream viewership.

BGMI

As far as Krafton is concerned, there is no official number about the number of total installations on both Android and iOS after BGMI made its comeback. Maybe the reason behind losing interest is the gap of ten months and viewers jumping on to alternative games like Call of Duty, Fortnite, etc.

Maybe it’s still early days, as the game was properly available only earlier this week, and more time needs to pass before coming to any sort of conclusion whether Indian viewers are over BGMI once and for all. Our hunch is that BGMI viewership will slowly come back to its pre-ban levels, if popular gaming influencers keep streaming the game as much as they used to. Let’s wait and watch.
