iPhone 14 Emergency SOS via satellite helped two hikers trapped in heavy rainfall

Apple iPhone 14’s Emergency SOS via satellite feature has helped to save two hikers in New Zealand who were trapped because of the rising water levels as a result of the high rain runoff.

According to a report by AppleInsider, two hikers who were trapped on a riverbank in New Zealand's Arthur's Pass National Park used the Emergency SOS via satellite feature on their iPhone 14 to receive help.

Water levels at the Sudden Valley Stream in Arthur's Pass started to rise to a dangerous level as a result of the area's high rain runoff. The hikers were unable to navigate around or through the danger and used the iPhone 14's Emergency SOS by satellite capability to get help.

The rescue operation of the hikers was operated by New Zealand air and rescue ambulance operator GCH Aviation and Canterbury West Air Rescue Service. Canterbury confirmed its involvement in this rescue operation via its Instagram account.

"Did you know that an iPhone 14 has an SOS feature that can connect via satellite and alert authorities if you become lost or injured out in the backcountry?” Canterbury wrote, "Yesterday we were able to respond to some hikers stranded in a river because they had this technology with them.”

Apple’s Emergency SOS via satellite feature had helped to save users many times. Earlier this year, the feature helped to save two tourists who got lost in an area without cellphone signal during an outing in the Apennine Mountains. Fortunately, they had an iPhone 14 which provided them the option to call for help via a satellite text message. They were then rescued by the local fire department.

Also, a hiker in California’s Angeles National Forest was rescued with the help of her iPhone 14’s Emergency SOS via satellite feature.

Talking about its design, the Pixel smartwatch 2 is very similar to its predecessor. It will come with a bezel-less round dial with a curved display, which doesn’t seem to be a very safe option to me. The microphone is placed right next to the crown and there is also a button, which could help in operating the smartwatch. Google showcased its upcoming smartwatch in Porcelain colour that is also used for Google Pixel 8.

Speaking of the specifications, we don’t know much about the smartwatch except, the smartwatch might be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 processor. iPhone 15 event buzz: Apple rumoured to discontinue all silicon accessories

The countdown for the release of the Apple iPhone 15 series has started. The tech giant is all set to hold its ‘Wonderlust’ event tomorrow where it is expected to unveil its next smartphone lineup, Watch Series 9, and more. A new report has claimed that in addition to discontinuing its lineup of leather cases this year, Apple might also start gradually discontinuing its silicone accessories.

According to a report by MacRumors, Apple might be planning to discontinue its silicone rubber and fluoroelastomer accessories and is expected to replace them with ones made of more eco-friendly next-generation materials.

The transition is expected to include accessories like the iPhone Silicone Case with MagSafe, Sport Band, Solo Loop, and AirTag Loop. The rumour came from Apple device collector and leaker ‘Kosutami’ who previously shared details of the iPhone 15's braided USB-C cable, multiple prototypes like the MagSafe chargers and AirPods in different colour options, and more.

Following the release of the iPhone 15 series, Apple is anticipated to discontinue its leather iPhone cases and replace them with accessories made of a high-end material dubbed ‘FineWoven’.

According to the report, the move of discontinuing silicone accessories “is not expected to be imminent, instead taking place via a more gradual transition whereby existing models are not refreshed with new color options.”

It's believed that the move to switch to more environmentally friendly materials is what led to the discontinuation of all leather and silicone Apple accessories. Apple's silicone rubber accessories are not created from recycled materials, despite having a reduced carbon footprint than their leather counterparts. Also, due to their heat-resistant qualities and sturdy, crosslinked structure, materials like fluoroelastomer are extremely challenging to recycle.

In the short term, ‘FineWoven’ is anticipated to replace leather as Apple's initial next-generation material, but it might also eventually replace some silicone accessories. Moreover, new fresh, greener materials might also be launched for additional accessories in the future.

WhatsApp may soon let you message people using other apps: Heres why

Meta-owned instant messaging platform WhatsApp is reportedly working on a third-party chats feature. This support for chat interoperability is expected to allow other people to connect with users on WhatsApp even if they don’t have a WhatsApp account. As this feature is currently under development, it is not ready for beta testers, as per the report.

According to a report by a known WhatsApp tipster publication, WABetaInfo, the messaging platform is working to meet new European Union regulations by adding chat interoperability support in an upcoming app update.

The European Union has recently agreed on a significant competition reform called the Digital Markets Act (DMA). This reform will impose strict rules on major tech companies, requiring them to allow users to communicate across different apps.

WhatsApp is among the companies that must adhere to the new regulations outlined in the DMA. This is because WhatsApp qualifies as a gatekeeper service due to its status as a large tech platform with a substantial user base, meeting the DMA's criteria. In the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.19.8 update, available on the Google Play Store, it has been discovered that WhatsApp is actively working on complying with these new regulations.

WhatsApp

For the new third-party chats feature, WhatsApp is expected to add a new section dedicated to the new regulations. As it is in development, the section appears empty and is not accessible to users.

In order to deliver its interoperability service in the European Union, WhatsApp has six months to modify the app to the new European standards. It is still unknown if this feature will eventually be available in countries other than the European Union.

The third-party chat support will likely enable individuals using other platforms to reach out to WhatsApp users, even if they don't have a WhatsApp account.

According to the report, while this broader network is expected to improve communication with people who use different messaging apps, the new feature might also raise concerns about end-to-end encryption when receiving a message from users who don’t use WhatsApp. Also, users might have the choice to opt out in the future, as outlined in Article 7 of the regulations.
