Samsung Galaxy Fold India launch confirmed for October 1: Heres what to expect

Soon after rumours of Samsung’s first foldable phones hitting the Indian shores arose, the company has confirmed the same. Samsung has sent out media invites for its Galaxy Fold handset launch, which will be taking place on October 1 in India. While we knew that the company’s foldable phone will be made available in India, things were a bit unclear ever since the device was recalled due to display issues. Early units of the Galaxy Fold that were sent out to reviewers malfunctioned due to an issue with the display and the hinge. Since then, Samsung has been working on correcting the issues for a global relaunch of the smartphone, which recently happened.

Samsung Galaxy Fold specifications

Samsung’s Galaxy Fold comes equipped with two displays. It sports a smaller panel on the outside and a foldable display on the inner side. The outer display measures 4.6-inch and it is an HD+ Super AMOLED panel. When the smartphone is unfolded, it reveals a 7.3-inch QXGA+ Dynamic AMOLED display inside. The handset runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC and comes with 12GB RAM and 512GB of internal storage. In terms of optics, the handset features three main cameras on the back that sports a 12MP + 12MP + 16MP configuration. When folded, there’s a 12MP sensor on the front.

In its unfolded state, the front display sports a notch on the upper right corner that houses dual cameras. The housing hosts a 10MP main sensor, along with an 8MP depth-sensing camera. The smartphone is backed by two batteries, which have a combined capacity of 4380 mAh and supports fast wired charging, along with wireless charging.

Samsung Galaxy Fold expected India price

The Samsung Galaxy Fold will go on sale in the US on September 27 starting at $1,980 (Rs 1.40 lakh approx). While there’s no official information on the phone’s India pricing, a recent report suggests that it could be priced between Rs 1.5 lakh and Rs 1.75 lakh in the country. As per the report, the company will also offer some exclusive benefits with such an expensive device like access to specialised customer care services like one-on-one access to Samsung experts, and a 24/7 support hub online or over the phone.

Android 10 Go edition is a lighter, faster and more secure update for Google Go OS

Google understands the importance of the next billion users and with the aim of delivering a better first time smartphone experience, it introduced the Android Go program in 2018 with Google Oreo (Go edition). The program is aimed at providing a faster, resource sparing operating system for less powerful smartphones. Now, the company has announced Android 10 (Go edition) operating system for smartphones which come equipped with less than 1.5GB RAM. Google says that the new OS focuses on making the Android ecosystem faster and more secure for such devices and is designed with new app experiences in mind.

Android 10 (Go edition) features

The new Android Go OS release is said to enable faster app switching in a way that is more memory efficient. Google claims that apps boot 10 percent faster on Android 10 (Go edition), as compared to Android 9 (Go edition), and the overall security is improved as well.  The company is using Adiantum, which, to recall, is the company’s new encryption method that works on less powerful devices without stressing the system. Since Adiantum is created to run without the need of any special hardware, all Go edition users should be able to benefit from it. Google reveals that Android 10 (Go edition) powered devices will be released in the coming months.

Alongside the Android 10 (Go edition) announcement, Google also revealed some numbers concerning the lightweight OS. As per the company, over 1600 Android (Go edition) smartphones by more than 500 manufacturers have hit the market in over 180 countries. The phones running on Android Go edition operating system like Xiaomi Redmi Go, Samsung A2, Tecno Spark 2 and others are said to comprise of more than 80 percent of entry-level Android phones that are being activated.

Most Google apps like Gallery Go, YouTube Go, Google Go and others are already optimised for Google Go OS. These apps consume less data to download, take up less space when installed and are less demanding on a device.

Amazon launches new Echo, Echo Dot with clock and Echo Studio in India, rolls out new Alexa features

Amazon unveiled a slew of new devices at its Alexa event at its headquarters in Seattle, US. Some of the devices have been launched simultaneously in India, which include the new Amazon Echo, Echo Dot with clock and a new Echo Studio. In addition, the company announced a slew of new Amazon Alexa features like the ability to interact with the digital assistant in Hindi or Hinglish, routine recommendations, a new whisper mode and more. Some of these options are available now, while others will be made available later this year. Here’s all you need to know.

Amazon Echo Studio price, features and availability

The Amazon Echo Studio is the highlighted product amongst the new launches. Amazon claims the device is capable of delivering studio-quality audio with Dolby Atmos. It comes equipped with a 5.25-inch woofer and is touted to handle 330W of peak power to deliver “studio-quality sound with space, clarity, and depth.“  It sports a 1-inch tweeter and three 2-inch midrange speakers, along with a 24-bit DAC and a power amplifier with 100 kHz bandwidth to support playback of high-res lossless music.

One or more units of the device can also be paired with an Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K for simple or multi-channel sound with support for Dolby Atmos, Dolby Audio 5.1, and stereo audio. It also sports room adaptation technology to adjust its sound output based on where it is placed in a room and how loud or quiet its surroundings are. It also comes with built-in Zigbee smart home hub so that it can be used to control compatible smart home devices. The Amazon Echo Studio is priced at Rs 22,999 and it is also up for pre-orders on Amazon.in.

Amazon Echo price, features and availability

Amazon has announced a new Echo speaker that comes with updated fabric design and will be available in a blue colour variant. It costs Rs 9,999, which is same as its predecessor and sports an audio setup similar to the Echo Plus. It comes equipped with a 3-inch woofer and offers increased back volume that is said to deliver deeper bass while keeping the mids and highs clear. It is now up for pre-orders on Amazon and select offline stores, and will be shipped later this year. Those who pre-order it can avail of a smart bulb for free, and get a smart plug at Rs 199.

Amazon Echo Dot with clock price, features and availability

A new and updated Echo Dot is also now available for preorders in India via Amazon.in and select retail stores. Priced at Rs 5,499, the new Echo Dot with clock packs an LED display that shows the time so that users need not question Alexa about the same. Like always, one can ask the digital assistant to check temperature outdoors, set an alarm or a cooking timer. The device’s display is apparently capable of sensing ambient brightness to adjust its intensity and one can tap on top of the device to snooze an alarm too.

New Alexa features and their availability

Amazon is not only focussed on launching new devices but is also working on improving its digital assistant, Alexa. It has announced a host of new features for Alexa, which includes the ability to interact with the digital assistant in Hindi or Hinglish. One can now get their queries answered by Alexa in Hindi or Hinglish and this is available in multiple contexts, varied regional accents and dialects. The smart assistant can now also deliver spelling of words in Hindi. Some new commands that one can try out under the new feature include, “Alexa, Bollywood ke latest gane sunao", “Alexa, cricket score batao”, “Alexa, sher ki aawaaz sunao”, or “Alexa, apne baare mei batao”.

Alexa is also slated to soon come with multilingual functionality, which means one will be able to talk to it in both Hindi and English simultaneously. With the feature, when someone asks Alexa a question in Hindi, it will reply in the same language and when the user asks in English, the assistant will answer in English. The option could prove helpful for users in households where both Hindi and English languages are spoken. This feature will be available later this year but has been announced soon after Amazon officially rolled out Hindi language support for Alexa.

Users will now also be available to adjust Alexa’s speech speed by asking the voice assistant to speak faster or slower. There are seven speeds to select from, which includes Alexa’s standard speaking rate, four faster speaking rates, and two slower speaking speeds. Saying “Alexa, speak slower,” or “Alexa, speak faster” will adjust its speech speed on any Alexa-enabled device. One can also reset the speech rate by saying, “Alexa, speak at your default rate.” Additionally, Alexa will now suggest routines based on a user’s daily habits and by when it asks to set a routine, one needs to say “Yes” to confirm.

One notable addition to Alexa is the ability to ask the assistant what she last heard from its users. One can ask the voice assistant “Alexa, tell me what you heard” and it will relay a user’s most recent voice requests. While this feature is now available, the company will also soon bring auto-delete voice recordings option to Alexa, which builds upon the ability to delete user’s recording for a day or what they just said. The new option will enable users to set a routine so that Alexa auto-deletes their voice recordings that are older than three or 18 months in a recurring fashion.

Facebook announces new VR platform called Horizon, draws immediate comparison to Ready Player One

Well, it looks like the higher ups at Facebook have been watching a little too much Ready Player One. At the recently concluded Oculus Connect 6 event, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed Facebook Horizon. Dubbed a ‘social VR platform’, Facebook Horizon is essentially version one of the Oasis from the film, Ready Player One. Horizon seems to be an interconnected world for virtual avatars to meet, play games and more. The app will be coming to the Oculus Quest and the Oculus Rift platform.

In the past we’ve seen various VR spaces such as Second Life and such but nothing on this scale. It looks like you will be able to create an avatar who can then travel through ‘portals’ to various ‘rooms’ where you can play games or hangout with other users. Even though VR has not picked up steam in the mainstream market, this looks like it could push that notion forward. Zuckerberg said, “That’s kind of our bread and butter as a company. We build a lot of the best social experiences for phones and computers, and we want to do this for virtual reality as well.”

Facebook has also announced that Horizon will launch as a closed beta test in 2020. Even though this seems to be a few months away, the future for technology like this seems bright. As of now, VR, as a medium, is still associated with gaming and the like. For the image to change, companies may have to try and market their product as something that is not just for gaming but a social platform for the mainstream.

Who knows what the future holds for this technology but we will be following this story as it progresses.

Apple Music for Android receives Chromecast support, dark theme, and more

Apple Music for iOS received a minor visual overhaul and a few new features along with Apple’s latest iOS 13 update last week but it appears those changes are, fortunately, not exclusive to Apple users. In the latest stable update, Apple Music for Android has received support for Chromecast, an optional dark theme, and a real-time lyrics readout feature. Users of the app should be able to see the changes appear in the latest version of Apple Music (v3.0.0).

The biggest visual change lies in the Now Playing screen of the Apple Music app. The bottom area now houses three centered icons instead of the previous corner-aligned two. Clicking the first icon during music playback brings up a real-time lyrics readout page. What that means is that the app will synchronise the displayed section of the lyrics with the current position of the song. It will also match the auto-scroll speed with the song’s tempo so you can start singing along to the tune as soon as you hit the button.

Clicking the second icon brings up the familiar Chromecast ‘Cast to’ prompt, which lets you cast music to a Chromecast device of your choice. This feature was until now present in the recent beta versions of Apple Music. This is the first stable version to come with native support for Chromecast. Clicking the third icon brings up a slightly revamped Up Next screen, which contains a list of songs that will be played next along with options to shuffle and repeat.

In addition, Apple Music for Android gets a dark theme that turns on automatically when dark mode is enabled at a system level in Android 10. Of course, it can also be enabled or disabled manually from Settings on older Android versions. According to Apple, the updated Android app also gives users access to “over 100,000 broadcast radio stations from around the world”. You can download Apple Music for Android from here.

It is equipped with a custom Gamma Color Magic processor, supports Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. In addition, the more expensive version of the TV sports a kevlar finish on the back and there will be an app that enables users to input directly to the TV or change the volume. There might also be support for Amazon’s digital assistant Alexa on the TV since a leaked image of the remote hints at a dedicated Amazon Prime button.
