PC Gaming Show E3 Roundup

Plenty of game announcements came from the PC Gaming Show’s E3 Keynote. Here are some of the highlights of the upcoming games that you may want to keep an eye out for.

Rawmen

It's basically the same as Splatoon but with food, Rawmen is a third-person arena shooter where instead of conventional weapons, you fight with food against up to 2 to 8 players. You can become a human meatball by jumping into the meat juice and rolling your way back home, sling soup at your opponents or launch yourself in the air using doughnut bombs.

They Always Run

They Always Run is a Western 2D action game that sees you playing a three-armed mutant hunting dangerous bounties all across the galaxy. From the animation, the visuals, the music, the game is just dripping with style, and plenty of violence as you hack and slash your way through each level.

Far: Changing Tides

Far: Lone Sails was a meditative experience as you charted a journey across a post-apocalyptic environment with nothing but yourself and a unique hunk of junk of a vehicle. So a sequel like Far: Changing Tides comes as a pleasant surprise. It looks beautiful and this time you’re utilizing a ship across a flooded world, while trying to keep your machine moving forward by salvaging various ship parts during your adventures.

Next Space Rebels

A space rocket-building simulator with an added narrative, Next Space Rebels has the feel of Kerbal Space Program, as one tries to put together a rocket engine that can actually be launched. The story is conveyed through FMV cutscenes, as a fictional hacker group called Next Space Rebels urges the global community to build and launch rockets themselves, prompting them to democratize the universe.

Soulstice

From the name, this game may be assumed to be a Soulslike clone, but Italian developer Reply Game Studios is also taking inspiration from the popular Japanese character-action games like Devil May Cry, as well as early ‘80s anime. PlatinumGames’ Astral Chain may be another influence, as we can control two sisters called Briar and Lute simultaneously, one possessing superhuman strength, the other being a ghost with mystical powers.

Lemnis Gate

Lemnis Gate is a turn-based time-looping first-person shooter that tasks you to take control of each of your team members one at a time playing each round that lasts only for 25 seconds. Although it was announced last year, its release has been confirmed with the latest trailer of Lemnis Gate revealing that the game is coming on August 3rd to PC, as well as to consoles like Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One, PS5, PS4. An open beta is also coming in July, so players can wrap their heads around just how this time-bending gameplay feels.

Everything about Valorants upcoming agent KAYO: The Silencer Robo

Words of the new upcoming agent were first confirmed by Valorant developers last month in the State of the Agents. As promised, they will be introducing the KAY/O agent with the new update rolling out next week with the arrival of Valorant's Episode 3: Act 1 on June 22nd. Even during the Summer Gaming Fest last week, the announcement of KAY/O making way into valorant was teased by the developers.

From what it looks like, KAY/O’s abilities primarily appear to be suppressive and tactical, which implies they are more focused towards slowing down enemies and helping your team break into tough-to-breach areas.

Shut down your opponents with robotic precision when VALORANT’s newest agent, KAY/O, boots up with Episode 3. Watch KAY/O Agent Reveal trailer here

FAU:G Team Deathmatch mode now available in Early Access

Fearless And United: Guards aka FAU:G’s multiplayer more is now available, albeit in Early Access. As was the case with Battlegrounds Mobile India, this means that the mode will have limited slots open for the same. It should be noted that the new multiplayer mode is not a part of the main FAU:G (review) app. Rather, the app is available as a separate listing on the Google Play Store. You can check out their official listing here. Unfortunately, most of the slots in the Early Access seem to be full at the moment.

Bullets will fly when FAUG face their dushman in deadly team battles! Join beta release of FAUG's TDM mode & let your feedback be heard! Limited slots only! Download now https://ift.tt/3h06D43 #MaskUp@vishalgondal @akshaykumar @dayanidhimg@BharatKeVeer pic.twitter.com/ERw5fQj22T

— nCORE Games (@nCore_games) June 27, 2021

The new Team Deathmatch mode offers PvP matches between teams of five players each. As with the launch of the campaign mode back in January, there is currently only one TDM map available to players right now. Called Bazaar, the new map is set in a suburban environment and is said to offer ample cover as well as vantage points. This should ensure that players need to properly strategise instead of blindly rushing in.

In terms of weapons, the screenshots in the listing suggest that players will get access to assault rifles, SMG, sniper rifles, LMGs, pistols, shotguns, grenades and more. It is not yet known if there will be a levelling system with these weapons or if nCore Games would be adding more weapons later. We also do not yet know if more maps would come to the game or how frequently they would be added.

FAU:G isn’t the only game to be limited to Early Access. After months of teasing, Battlegrounds Mobile India also became available via Early Access last week. The game is pretty much the same as PUBG Mobile, however, there are a few differences. You can check that out in the video below.

Amazon reportedly destroys millions of perfectly fine gadgets every year

An undercover investigation by ITV News has revealed that Amazon is sending millions of laptops, smartphones, Bluetooth speakers, and even face masks every year to landfills and recycling centres.

The news website shows recorded footage from one of 175 warehouses that Amazon operates across the world where unsold goods are being marked for destruction and being dispatched in trucks. A former employee further reveals that the target of this centre located in Dunfermline, Scotland alone was to destroy 130,000 items per week or 6 million products every year.

Amazon is also donating a measly portion of the unsold inventory. For every 130,000 items sent for destruction, around 28,000 were marked for donation.

“I used to gasp. There’s no rhyme or reason to what gets destroyed: Dyson fans, Hoovers, the occasional MacBook, and iPad; the other day, 20,000 Covid (face) masks still in their wrappers,” the employee further revealed.

The explanation for this scandalous practice is that after a product becomes obsolete, it’s cheaper to destroy it rather than to store it in the warehouse. ITV news notes that what Amazon is doing isn’t exactly illegal.

“We are working towards a goal of zero product disposal and our priority is to resell, donate to charitable organisations or recycle any unsold products. No items are sent to landfill in the UK. As a last resort, we will send items to energy recovery, but we're working hard to drive the number of times this happens down to zero,” said an Amazon spokesperson in response to the allegations.

This isn’t the first time Amazon has been pointed out for destroying perfectly good inventory. An undercover investigation in 2019 revealed that the company destroyed 3 million products in France that year.

The new investigation has elicited interest from many activists and politicians in the U.K. Even Prime Minister Boris Johnson has promised to look into the allegations.

What if a botched Google search card says you are a serial killer

Many of us have come to heavily rely on Google Search and often don’t question the veracity of information Google cherry-picks from the vast data available on the world wide web for its search cards. This incident, which is one part funny and two parts scary, makes it clear that Google’s Knowledge Graph may not be as sacrosanct as you may have believed.

Hristo Georgiev was informed by a former colleague that a Google search of his name returned a Google Knowlege Graph that depicted his photo and linked it to a Bulgarian rapist and serial killer of the same name, also known as ‘The Sadist’, who murdered five people back in the 1970s and was later executed by shooting.

The graph linked the info to a Wikipedia article, which incidentally had no link to any of Georgiev’s profile or his image. It was Google’s algorithms that erroneously matched the two. What’s even more problematic is that Hristo Georgiev ids not a unique name and is shared by hundreds of other people.

As Georgiev notes in his blog, such search bungles can have serious implications - “The fact that an algorithm that's used by billions of people can so easily bend information in such ways is truly terrifying.

The rampant spread of fake news and cancel culture has made literally everyone who's not anonymous vulnerable. Whoever has a presence on the internet today has to look after their "online representation". A small mistake in the system can lead to anything from a minor inconvenience to a disaster that can decimate careers and reputations of people in a matter of days”

The issue was highlighted by the Hacker News community and has since been fixed. As community members point out, this wasn’t a one-off incident where Google botched up its cards. Apparently, there have been errors as grave as listing the wrong symptoms or describing easily treatable maladies as "Incurable".

That’s even more of a problem since Google Assistant authoritatively reads from these cards to answer voice searches.

What we can take away from the whole incident is that to err is not just human, and to not take anything algorithms put together at face value.
