Google Pixel 7 series finally gets Clear Calling feature: Heres how it works

Tech giant Google has introduced a new feature called "Clear Calling" in its latest beta update for Pixel 7 series users to improve call clarity.

The call quality enhancer is available for those who download the Android 13 QPR1 (Quarterly Platform Release) beta 3 software update.

According to the Android Authority, during Google's Pixel launch event earlier this month, the company also unveiled a few new software features coming to the handsets.

As part of those features, Clear Calling was developed, which "automatically filters out background noise and enhances the voice on the other end of the line with machine learning, making it easier to hear the person on the other end of the line, even when they are walking on a windy street or dining in a noisy restaurant," said Google in a blogpost.

Users can find this feature in their sound settings if they install the Android 13 QPR1 beta. Simply scroll down to settings, tap on sound & vibration, and then find Clear Calling. Users can toggle Clear Calling on or off once they enter the page.

Users will need to sign up for Google's beta program before they can get started. There may be bugs and errors in this update due to it being an unstable version, the report added.

LG launches new Smart Monitor with 4K display and AirPlay 2: Check specifications here

The South Korean tech giant LG has released a new smart monitor with a 4K screen resolution, AirPlay 2 and runs on WebOS. The smart monitor is a successor of the LG StanbyMe (yes, that was its name) released in February this year, which only offered 1080p resolution. However, the model had availability issues, and in spite of coming in a battery-powered variant, StanbyMe did not do well. Nevertheless, the new LG Smart Monitor with model number 32SQ780S seems promising.

LG's new Smart Monitor comes with a 4K display

First, the LG Smart Monitor comes with a 32-inch 4K screen, which makes the monitor both handy and useful. It runs on WebOS, a Linux-based operating system for smart monitors and TVs developed by the company. The smart monitor also has a feature called AirPlay 2 that allows it to stream audio to multiple devices simultaneously. Users can use the smart monitor to relay audio to multiple Bluetooth speakers or headsets simultaneously.

In terms of connectivity, the LG Smart Monitor provides many options, including two HDMI ports, three USB-A ports, one USB-C port and an RJ45 port if someone wants to use a wired internet connection. Hence, users can connect the smart monitor to a plethora of devices. In addition, the monitor comes with a triple-jointed stand that can be adjusted at several angles. It has a built-in clamp that holds it in place and provides a sturdy point of movement for the monitor.

The LG Smart Monitor could be priced at around US $499

Overall, the LG smart monitor is a hybrid monitor/TV as it provides all the functionality of a smart TV unless one wants a large TV screen. The 32-inch LG Smart Monitor is listed on Amazon; however, it cannot be ordered now. The price of the smart monitor will reportedly be around US $499, and it will come in a white finish only. However, LG has not yet announced a smart monitor release date; hence, the pricing can change.

Apple Fitness+ on the iPhone will launch on October 24

The Fitness+ will give users access to a complete range of workout routines and meditation. One limitation of the app will be accuracy. iPhone users can rely on estimates, whereas Apple Watch owners can depend on constant heart rate monitoring to determine their calorie burn. Nevertheless, users may want an Apple smartwatch for personalized performance data. The iWatch is also helpful if you want a scheduled notification when it is time for a walk or a run.

Apple Fitness+ features

Apple is introducing a new service for its users. You now get three free months of Fitness+ if you buy an iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV, not just an Apple Watch. In addition, you can turn on the browser notifications to receive breaking news alerts from Engadget and disable notifications at any time in your settings menu.

The iOS 16.1 will include several changes beyond the Fitness+ support. For example, you can expect an improved battery life icon, Live Activities like sports scores, iCloud Shared Photo Library, per-app copy-and-paste permissions, and clean energy charging. Hence, many of Apple's OS update commitments will become a reality in days, regardless of which device you're using.

Hyesoon (Sally) Jeong, VP at Samsung Electronics and the in-charge of One UI development, stated that the South Korean tech company plans to roll out the stable One UI 5.0 update for all its compatible flagships, the foldables, and the Galaxy S21 series, before the end of this year. He further added that the One UI team is currently working on offering seamless updates, and it may roll out with One UI 6 next year.

After the October 20 event, a Samsung executive reportedly confirmed that the company is working on seamless updates and they would introduce it with One UI 6. In addition, The executive also revealed information about the rollout plans of One UI 5.

Samsung One UI 5 to roll out before the year-end

None of the Galaxy smartphones come with the Android’s Seamless Updates feature, meaning the phones take up to 10 to 20 minutes to reboot after an update installation. With the introduction of this feature, Samsung phones will receive and install updates in the background and reboot after the installation has finished.

However, the company denied the rumours that the One UI would be available to Chromebooks and TVs. Samsung has been testing the One UI 5 for months now, and the company will likely roll out the stable Android 13 update to the Galaxy S22 smartphones by the end of October.

Twitter introduces new look for its icons

San Francisco, Oct 22 (IANS) The microblogging site Twitter has announced it is introducing a new look for its icons used across the social network.

The company's "Twitter Design" account tweeted two tweets from the thread so that people could see what's changed.

In the first thread, users can see how they looked before and now, while in the second one, users can see a bunch of them together.

"The goal was to create a cohesive set of icons that are bold in shape and style yet still relatable and a little cheeky where possible," Twitter said.

The modifications are in line with the company's new visual design language, which it unveiled in August 2021 and includes the use of its Chirp font throughout the app, according to the report.

"Twitter will be making the new icons available to everyone on the web, iOS, and Android "over the coming days," a company spokesperson was quoted as saying.

In August 2021, the platform launched a new visual design language to provide a streamlined, modern backdrop for future design and product changes at Twitter.

"Following this launch, we kicked off a new iconographic set to continue the visual evolution based on a core set of principles we developed," the company said.

Meanwhile, Twitter is working on a new feature that will allow user to control who can mention them in their tweets, not letting anyone tag or mention your Twitter handle with their posts unless you want them to.

Apple Watch helps detect rare cancer in 12-yr-old girl

San Francisco, Oct 22 (IANS) An Apple Watch has reportedly been credited with spotting a 12-year-old girl's rare cancer before she was even aware of it, with the help of its heart rate notifications feature.

As reported by Hour Detroit, Imani Miles and her mother Jessica Kitchen now view the Apple Watch as more than just a gadget.

Imani's mother, Jessica, noticed that her daughter's Apple Watch started beeping constantly, alerting Imani to an abnormally high heart rate.

"That's really weird because it's never happened before. It just kept going off," said the mother.

The concerned mother took her daughter to the hospital, where doctors noticed a tumour in her appendix.

It was then that they learned of a "neuroendocrine tumour" on her appendix, which according to doctors, is "rarely seen in children", the report added.

When doctors found Imani's tumour, it had already spread to other parts of her body, requiring her to undergo surgery to remove it.

"If the watch didn't go off, I probably would have just waited and taken her in the next couple of days," Kitchen was quoted as saying.

"If she didn't have that watch, it could have been so much worse," she added.

Imani had surgery at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital in the US to remove the remaining tumour, according to the report.

Earlier this month, Apple Watch detected a 34-year-old woman's pregnancy.

The woman on Reddit posted that the watch indicated that her average resting heart rate had significantly increased in just a few days, which made her suspect that something was off.

In July, a woman's heart was detected with a rare tumour after she received multiple alerts that her heart was in atrial fibrillation.

Indian regulatory authority fines Google 133776 crores for anti-competitive practices

An Indian regulatory body has fined alphabet-owned Google Rs. 1337.76 crores for anti-competitive practices. It is a major setback to the company as it has been proactive in the region for the past couple of years. As per Counterpoint, 97% of India's 600 million smartphone users are operating on Android devices. It is also important to note that the company has pumped a massive fortune into Indian companies functioning in the country, like Jio and Airtel.

CCI devised five markets to investigate Google's dominance

The Competition Commission of India considered five relevant markets to investigate Google and set up an inquiry for the same. During the assessment that began about three and a half years ago, the body has concluded that Google is dominant in all the relevant markets and has imposed a penalty of Rs. 1337.76 crores on the California-based search giant. For your reference, the relevant markets investigated by the CCI are mentioned below.

The market for licensable OS for smart mobile devices  The market for app store for Android smart mobile OS  The market for general web search services  The market for non-OS specific mobile web browsers  The market for online video hosting platforms (OVHP)

Further, CCI has also issued a set of guidelines for the company. The guidelines state that manufacturers should have the right to choose from Google's proprietary apps that are preinstalled on smartphones. Second, the body says that licensing of Play Store should not be linked with preinstalling Google search services on a smartphone. Third, CCI says that Google shall not deny its Play Services' API access to competitors, developers or OEMs. Additionally, the company cannot incentivise or obligate OEMs to sell devices based on Android services.

Here is how the regulatory authority defines Apple's business in comparison to Google

Readers will find it interesting that the Competition Commission of India defines Apple's business. The regulatory authority states, "Apple's business is primarily based on a vertically integrated smart device ecosystem which focuses on the sale of high-end smart devices with state-of-the-art software components." Isn't that too sweet? On the other hand, the authority found Google's business "to be driven by the ultimate intent of increasing users on its platform so that they interact with its revenue earning service," which is Google Search, where the company earns by showing ads.
