Highlights: Samsung launches ISOCELL Slim 3T2 ultra-slim 20MP image sensor It measures 1/3.4 inches and is claimed to be ideal for phones with punch-hole displays The sensor is fitted with Samsung’s Tetracell technology At a time when manufacturers are finding ways to install edge-to-edge displays on their phones, Samsung has launched the ISOCELL Slim 3T2 20MP image sensor claiming it has the smallest form factor in the industry. Measuring 1/3.4 inches (approx 5.1mm diagonally), the sensor has a 0.8μm-pixel and delivers 20MP resolution for both front and back cameras in the mid-range smartphones. “The ISOCELL Slim 3T2 is our smallest and most versatile 20MP image sensor that helps mobile device manufacturers bring differentiated consumer value not only in camera performance but also in features including hardware design. As the demand for advanced imaging capabilities in mobile devices continue to grow, we will keep pushing the limits in image sensor technologies for richer user experiences,” Jinhyun Kwon, Vice President of System LSI Sensor Marketing at Samsung Electronics, said in a statement. Primarily designed to support smartphones that are expected to come with the latest display technology, popularly known as the punch-hole display, the sensor can provide a viable option to manufacturers in reducing the size of the opening in the panel. Samsung says that the ISOCELL Slim 3T2 uses its ISOCELL Plus technology, which enables the sensor to capture and absorb more light information for accurate colour reproduction. The sensor is also fitted with Samsung’s Tetracell technology - which merges four pixels to work as one - and is claimed to take brighter and sharper pictures in low-light settings “as the colour filter array’s light sensitivity increases to that of a 1.6μm-pixel image sensor at 5MP resolution.” The South Korean tech company also says that when the sensor is clubbed with other sensors in a multi-cam setup for telephoto solutions, the 3T2 adopts an RGB color filter array instead of Tetracell technology. Samsung claims that the small size of the image sensor also reduces the height of the tele-camera module by around seven percent when compared to Samsung’s 1/3-inch 20MP image sensor. When compared with a 13MP sensor with the same module height, the 20MP 3T2 sensor is said to retain 60 percent higher effective resolution at 10x digital zoom. The Samsung ISOCELL Slim 3T2 is expected to enter in mass production in the first quarter of this year. Related Read: Can 48MP camera sensors make your smartphone photos pixel perfect?
