Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 used as skateboard, seen tumbling down the stairs in new videos

Highlights: Redmi CEO Lu Weibing is seen conducting extreme durability tests on the Redmi Note 7. The Redmi Note 7 comes with double-sided Gorilla Glass 5, that the company claims makes it more durable than other mid-rangers. In the videos, the Redmi Note 7 survives being kicked down the stairs and even when used as a skateboard.   Smartphone OEMs do little to prove the durability of their devices these days. While you still have the odd LG G7 with military-grade durability, most smartphones these days are made of delicate glass that tend to crack easily. Not the new Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 it seems. In another series of videos, new Redmi CEO Lu Weibing conducted some extreme durability tests including using two Redmi Note 7 to make a skateboard. In the first video, Lu Weibing is seen tumbling a Redmi Note 7 caged in a wastebasket (taped with duct tape) down a flight of stairs. The phone is seen falling down 18 stairs in four seconds, covering a height of 2.7m. And astonishingly, it survives. There seemed to be no external cracks and it worked same as before. Back when it launched, Redmi claimed the phone was made of double-sided Gorilla Glass 5 to reinforce its strength. The phone also surfaced in durability tests before its launch showing several people stamping on the phone’s display. Such pressure is usually enough to smash a phone up, but surprisingly, the Redmi Note 7 had survived. In the second test, CEO Lu Weibing is seen using the new phone as a skateboard. While it’s beyond our logic and reason as to why anyone would do that, the video showed two Redmi Note 7 units tied to a pair of rollers using duct tape. The video then shows the CEO skateboarding around on the contraption, and surprisingly enough, the phone survived without any visible damage. It was easily able to carry the weight. Clearly, Redmi is doing a lot to promote the durability and sturdiness of the Redmi Note 7. But the tests performed are far from being realistic. Gorilla Glass 5 is said to survive drops from 1.6 meters, shoulder height, on to rough, hard surfaces 80 percent of the time. However, we have seen instances of the protective glass being prone to getting scratches when kept in the pocket with keys and coins. Yet, the videos seem quite convincing and there’s little doubt that Redmi is confident the Note 7 is far more durable than other mid-range phones available today.
