WhatsApp authentication feature with biometric app lock option rolls out for beta testers on iOS

Highlights: WhatsApp has enabled new authentication feature on its iOS beta version 2.19.20.19. Beta testers can use Touch ID or Face ID to enter the app. The new feature is slated to roll out with the version 2.19.20. WhatsApp is reportedly implementing a new authentication feature for iOS users that it was previously rumoured to be working on. As per WABetaInfo, the company has submitted a new version 2.19.20.19 beta update, published through the TestFlight beta program, that brings the new option for beta testers, along with many other new features. The new option is stated to enable an in-app authentication function so that only a valid user can access the app. The feature could be made available for all users with the version 2.19.20 stable update on the App Store.  As per the report, the new authentication option is now available for all beta testers of the app and can be enabled from the Privacy tab under the Account section of the apps’ settings. Users with iPhone X or above will get to use Face ID for verification and access to the app, while older iPhone models will use Touch ID for enabling the feature. After the option is set-up, the phone will prompt users to use Face ID or Touch ID to access the app but there will also be an option to enter a passcode in case biometric authentication fails.  The report states that the biometric data or passcode set for authentication is stored locally on an iPhone and thus will not be sent to WhatsApp. “Your fingerprint (or face) data is encrypted in your phone: for this reason WhatsApp is not able to extract this information from your device (and no data is sent to their server), because the authentication process is managed by iOS,” says WABetaInfo. The new option will reportedly not be enacted when one replies to messages from notifications and this, in a sense, seems to defeat the purpose of placing authentication on the app. The feature will also not be implemented when one answers WhatsApp calls but this is understandable since calls are of higher priority. Additionally, iOS won’t even show a preview snapshot of WhatsApp over the recent apps tab when the option is enabled.  Related Reads: WhatsApp reportedly testing fingerprint authentication feature, revamped Audio Picker option WhatsApp for iOS may soon rollout updates for stickers, reply privately feature
