Samsung starts mass production of 12GB LPDDR4X RAM modules for smartphones

Highlights: Samsung claimed the demand for 12GB RAM modules will go up in second half of 2019. The 12GB LPDDR4X RAM module offers a data transfer rate of 34.1 GB per second. The module is also thinner than before and is manufactured on a 10nm process. The 5G variant of the Samsung Galaxy S10 comes with 12GB of RAM. Now, Samsung announced it has started to mass produce 12GB LPDDR4X RAM modules for OEMs to use, indicating that the amount of RAM in smartphones are going to go up. In 2018, we saw smartphones with 10GB of RAM come to market like the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition. The new modules are meant for use in high-end smartphones that require a lot of RAM for heavy tasks like readouts from multi-camera setups, 5G modems, artificial intelligence-based tasks and more. Samsung claimed it will increase the supply of 12GB RAM modules by 300 percent in the second half of 2019, while it promised to bring more modules of 8GB LPDRR4X RAM into the market. The 12GB RAM module is being manufactured on a 10nm process and will come with a data transfer rate of 34.1 GB per second. The module is made from a combination of six 16-gigabit LPDDR4X chips fused into a single unit. Samsung also claimed the 12GB RAM modules will be more power efficient, since it’s produced on a smaller manufacturing process. Samsung reduced the thickness of the modules and the 12GB module is just 1.1mm thin. This will allow OEMs to save space for bigger batteries and more camera sensors. The immediate benefit of having 12GB RAM in smartphones is smoother multi-tasking and faster response times. Apart from this, Samsung has also started mass production of eUFS 3.0 storage with up to 512GB storage capacities. Related Reads: OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition: Is 10GB RAM overkill?
