Google rolls out updates to Gmail to mark its 15th anniversary

Highlights: Google celebrates Gmail’s 15th anniversary by launching updates to the app. Brings Smart Compose feature for Android, and for four new languages. Introduces feature to schedule emails for later date and time. To mark Gmail’s 15th anniversary, Google has announced new features to bring greater efficiency and assistance in the app. With the latest update, the Smart Compose feature will be available to all Android devices and the support for iOS is coming soon. Also, the feature is now available for four new languages: Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese. Apart from this, Google is also introducing a feature to let users schedule mails. “G Suite’s journey began 15 years ago with the introduction of Gmail in 2004. Back then, Gmail pioneered a new and secure approach to email with 1GB of free storage and lightning-fast Google search built right in. Gmail continues to help people manage their work and personal lives with the help of useful innovations - from priority inbox, smart labels and spam filtering to Smart Reply, Smart Compose and nudges - all the while ensuring that email remains a safe, secure, and user-friendly experience for all,” Jacob Bank, Director of Product Management, G Suite, said in a statement. Smart Compose: According to a report from International Data Corporation (IDC), by 2020 mobile workers will account for nearly three-quarters (72.3 percent) of the US workforce. Google claims that the Smart Compose feature already saves people from typing over 1 billion characters each week on the web. With the latest update Smart Compose can now adapt to the way users write an email. For example, if a user prefers to greet the receivers with “Hello”, instead of “Hi, Gmail will learn that. It can even suggest a subject line based on the body of the mail a user has written. Scheduling email: Scheduling email is a feature that can come handy for a lot of people. There are times when you think and decide to send an email to someone at 10 next morning, however, you forget to send it. Well, Google has you covered now as it is now adding a new feature to Gmail that allows you to choose when an email should be sent. In simpler words, you can write an email now and schedule it to be sent at a future time and/or date. Moreover, users can now quickly take action on email, like respond to a comment thread in Google Docs, schedule a meeting, or fill out a questionnaire from within the message itself. The news comes a day before Google will pull the plug on Inbox by Gmail. This is the same date that the company has set to shut the Google+ service. The company aims to take a more focused approach that will help the company bring “the best email experience to everyone.” The company will shut down all Google+ accounts and pages and it will begin deleting content from consumer Google+ accounts on April 2.
