YouTube reportedly rolling Picture-in-Picture mode for non-premium users outside the US

YouTube for mobile devices received the Picture-in-Picture (PiP) option in mid-2018. First available for the users of the app in the US, the option enabled Premium/Red subscribers to minimise the app but still have a small PiP floating window open to watch videos while switching apps. The availability was later made available for non-premium users and it seems like Google is finally expanding the PiP service for non-premium users outside the US. As per an Android Police report, the feature is now being made available in more countries and the option to enable PiP might pop-up for users in countries outside the US.

Google’s support page describing the feature and its availability doesn’t mention if the PiP mode is rolling out. It is still stated that non-paying users of the app in the US can benefit from PiP playback but we expect the support page to be updated soon. Users can check if the option is available for them or not by heading over to the Settings in the YouTube app, which can be accessed by tapping on your profile image on the upper-right corner. The option, if available, should show up under the General menu.

Speaking of YouTube, Google recently introduced YouTube Music and YouTube Music Premium services in India. The online music streaming service entered the country with a competitor, Spotify. Since the two have stepped into the online music streaming service space in India, the competition is heating up. JioSaavn and Gaana recently discounted their yearly subscription prices by almost 70 percent and Apple Music also announced a price cut on its service. Apple Music student and family subscription plans are now priced at Rs 49 and Rs 149 respectively, down from Rs 60 and Rs 190. Subscribing to the service on a yearly basis now costs Rs 999, instead of Rs 1,200.

Spotify’s monthly subscription is priced at Rs 119, while YouTube Music’s monthly cost of subscription is even lower at Rs 99. As for JioSaavn and Gaana users, they can now avail yearly subscription for Rs 299. Before the price cut, JioSaavn’s annual subscription was priced at Rs 999, while the same for Gaana cost Rs 1,098.

Related Reads:

Apple Music rivals YouTube Music and Spotify by lowering monthly subscription to Rs 99

YouTube Music In India: Ten steps to mastering the new music streaming app from Google

Spotify India Free vs Premium: Comparing the two tiers
