Google might introduce new gesture in Android Q to enable screen pinning

With gestures completely taking over Android, there are no navigation soft keys and this is a problem with the Screen Pinning option on Android Q Beta. As noted by Android Police, the feature is currently unstable and if one uses navigation gestures to get out of screen pinning on Android Q Beta 3, they will be unable to navigate within the Android OS, access apps, or do anything and only a reboot fixed the issue. Now, with Android Q Beta 4 release, Google removed the screen pinning option altogether. However, XDADevelopers noted that the company might introduce it later with a new gesture for exiting screen pinning.

Screen pinning is a handy option when handing your phone over to someone else. The feature ensures that an app is pinned to the foreground until the home and back navigation keys are pressed together. Now, while digging code of the new Android OS, XDADevelopers has noted that Google might enable users to swipe up and hold to unpin pinned apps. While the gesture could be accidentally triggered, it is better than being stuck on a screen without being able to access it. The company might introduce the new gesture-based solution in an upcoming revision of Android Q beta update.

We previously came across a report that Google might make it mandatory for OEMs to implement navigation gestures introduced with Android Q. However, the company later confirmed that this will not be compulsory as Google sees third-party gestures “as a power user option”. While OEMs might have to offer Google’s traditional 3-button navigation and new gestures, they will also be free to include their own gestures, providing users more options to choose from. Currently, the latest Android Q Beta has the option of selecting between full navigation gestures, two button and three button soft navigation keys.
