How to install iPad OS Public Beta

The new iPad OS is now available for download in public beta. Before we tell you how to download it, know that the update is available only on the iPad Pro (includes all 12.9-inch, 11-inch, 10.5-inch, and 9.7-inch), iPad (fifth generation and newer), iPad mini (fourth generation and newer) and the iPad Air (second generation and newer).

If you are new to the beta program, you need to sign up here. To log in, click on the ‘sign in’ icon in the top right corner. Once signed in, you will have to enroll your device if you haven't already done so. You can enrol your device here.    Before getting to installing the new OS, it is good to back up your iPad. You can do so using iTunes. Do note that if you are using macOS Catalina, you can archive a backup using Finder. Select your device from Locations in the Finder sidebar. Create a backup then click Manage Backups to Archive your backup. Once backed up you need to install the profile on the iPad. From your iPad, go to beta.apple.com/profile through Safari to download the configuration profile. Your iPad will notify you when the profile has been downloaded.  Open Settings on the iPad, tap the profile and follow the onscreen instructions to allow installation. Lastly, you need to tap Settings > General > Software Update to install any available beta software.  When updates to the beta are available, you will be notified off them.  Note that to get out of the public beta program, you will need to restore your device. You can restore your device by following the steps here.

The iPad OS brings with it a number of features such as the ability to showcase apps in multiple spaces, App Expose, a redesigned home screen that changes the layout of the apps and adds widgets to the home screen. Users can also extend their workspace by using the iPad as an extended display. This feature was available through third-party apps but is now coming natively to the iPad. Users can also pinch to shrink the QuickType keyboard and move it wherever they want for easy one-handed typing and more room for apps. The iPad also gets a dark mode and the USB-C port on the iPad Pro can be used to connect external storage options.

You can check out the complete list of features coming to the new iPad OS here.
