Newest Windows Update causing BSOD, broken video drivers for many users

Another Windows update, another host of problems. Ever since last year’s botched up mid-year feature update, Microsoft’s Windows Update program has been plagued with problems galore. Patch Tuesday saw Microsoft release an update that has caused a flurry of problems for multiple users. Do note that these issues are not universal.

The patch released on Tuesday (Windows 10 KB4517389 version 1903), is apparently breaking the Start Menu and Microsoft Edge for some users. Another issue being reported by users is display flicker caused by issues with the display drivers.

Perhaps the most frustrating of all the issues cropping up is the blue screen of death greeting users upon booting up their PC. The BSOD is being caused by an issue with cldflt.sys, a file that is apparently associated with cloud services. This means if your PC had an active OneDrive connection or Google Drive or even iCloud for that matter, chances are, you’re going to be greeted by the BSOD.

Lastly, the update released October 15 is causing unexpected behavior in the Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection process. Microsoft has acknoeldged that after the October 15 update, Defender ATP might stop working and may also fail to send reporting data. Thankfully, this bug is limited to the Enterprise Edition of Windows 10 and only impacts enterprises and business that rely on Windows Defender ATP. Microsoft has also said that the fix for this particular issue would likely be released mid-november.

Fixes for the other numerous issues that have popped up will be pushed via another update that’s scheduled for Tuesday. For those who have not yet updated their machines, we strongly recommend waiting till it is established that the next update does indeed fix the problems, without creating new ones.
