Google Chrome 79 rollout for Android halted due to bug that wipes data for some apps

Google recently started rolling out Chrome 79 update for Windows, Mac, Android and iOS users. The new update brings a slew of new features to the browser, but due to a major bug, Google has paused its rollout for Android devices. As per a couple of Chrome Bug report pages, via 9to5Google, there’s a WebView issue related with the new version that affects third-party Android apps and is causing user data loss. Many apps are web versions of full-fledged websites and many apps don’t have an innate web browser. When these apps are booted, the Android WebView system component is launched, which is handled by Chrome.

The latest Chrome update changed the location where web data is stored and didn’t migrate it appropriately. This means that the data is not deleted but it wasn’t moved either, which caused multiple apps to start afresh. The original data is still present but there’s no defined way to access it and Google is working on a fix. As per a Chromium bug tracker sheet, there are a few strategies that are being considered to solve the issue. The first one is continuing the migration and moving the missing files to their new locations or to revert the change by moving migrated files to their old locations.

If you are one of the users who is affected by the new Chrome update, rolling back to the previous version might help resolve the issue. The new update was apparently already rolled out to 50 percent devices that have the app. In case you have not updated Chrome on Android, we suggest you wait a while. The new Chrome update brings notable new features for the browser. There are multiple new security improvements, including an integrated password checking utility. Chrome is also enabling real-time phishing protection on the desktop. You can read more about the update here.
