New PS5 controller patent suggests built-in mic, console unveil expected in February 2020

Another day, another PS5 story. The new information comes from a controller patent filed by Sony. The patent says that the controller could have a built-in microphone. Please note that just because the patent is filed does not mean that it will make an appearance on the controller. But it is possible that we will see a microphone in the controller. The use cases are significant - headset free chat, issuing commands, launching games, requesting guides when stuck in a game (isn’t that something Google Stadia promised?), so on and so forth. From the leaks of the controller, it is clear that the PS5 controller will be slightly chunkier than the PS4 controller and could feature a slightly larger trackpad. It isn't clear whether the PS5 controller will bring with it buttons at the back by default, but with the new $30 back button accessory for the PS4 controller, the internet is abuzz that the PS5 controller could come with back buttons built-in. Currently, back buttons are available only via third party pro controllers.

In other PlayStation information, David Jaffe, the famed game developer for his work on God of War and Twisted Metal tweeted, “PS5 reveal is less than 4 weeks away. Sony knows hardcore gamers are hanging on every scrap of info and know that just cause MSFT dominates the conversation at the moment, that's an easy thing to change when they are ready to reveal (assuming the reveal is good).” He tweeted the above on January 16 hinting that the February reveal could be true. To refresh your memory, Sony held an event back in February 2013 to reveal details of the PS4 and finally unveiled the console and price at E3 the same year. Considering Sony has confirmed that it is skipping E3 this year, it is possible that they have a different reveal strategy up their sleeve for the PS5.

Sony has given gamers limited information about the upcoming console. All confirmed details come from exclusive Wired articles and the PS5 logo which was revealed at CES 2020.

Microsoft, on the other hand, has revealed the look of the Xbox Series X at the Game Awards 2019. You can check out the details about the Xbox series X here.
