Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6 with IBIS launched in India

Canon India has today announced two long rumoured mirrorless cameras, the EOS R5 and the EOS R6. The EOS R5 is the resolution focussed mirrorless camera while the R6 is more focussed towards speed. Both, however, bring a host of impressive new features and improvements over Canon’s current mirrorless camera lineup.

Canon EOS R5 Specifications

The Canon EOS R5 houses a 45 megapixel full-frame sensor, which besides offering the megapixel count towards photos, also enabled 8K video recording. This makes the EOS R5 the first mirrorless camera to offer such high resolution video capture, a feature that was introduced on the Canon 1DX MarkIII, another world-first. The 8K video can be captured at upto 29.9fps, uncropped and will be recorded in camera, thanks to the provision of a CFExpress slot, alongside a UHS-II SD Card slot. In terms of stills, the EOS R5 can shoot at up to 12 fps with AF tracking when using the mechanical shutter and the burst rate increases to 20fps when using the electronic shutter. The camera also offers 100x100 AF point coverage, with 1053 points available in automatic AF selection mode while there are 5940 AF-points available during manual selection. The other notable feature of the EOS R5 is the introduction of 5-axis in-body image stabilisation (IBIS) which is effective up to 8 stops, another world-first. The EOS R5 body is composed out of magnesium alloy and comes with extensive dust and weather sealing, something that’s bound to please a lot of potential customers.

Canon EOS R6 Specifications

The Canon EOS R6 is equipped with a 20.2 megapixel full-frame sensor that Canon says has been inherited from the Canon EOS 1DX MarkIII. While the sensor might have been inherited from the 1D series, what users won’t get is 8K video capture. Instead, Canon brings 4K, 4:2:2 10-bit internal recording to the EOS R6, which offers enough resolution and colour information for content creators to start dabbling with high resolution HDR video. To meet th demands of the ultra high resolution and data heavy video stream, the Canon EOS R6 is equipped with dual UHS-II SD card slots. Currently, the fastest read/write speeds supported by SD cards is up to 300MB/s and around 260MB/s. When it comes to photos, the EOS R6 has the same burst rate as the EOS R5; that is 12fps with the mechanical shutter and 20 fps with th electronic shutter, with AF tracking enabled. Unlike the EOS R5, the EOS R6 doesn’t use magnesium alloy for its construction, instead turning to polycarbonate instead. You still get extensive weather and dust sealing though. Thankfully, you also get the 8-stop IBIS system. There's also the same 100x100 AF area coverage of the sensor with the same 1053 AF points available during automatic selction and a whopping 6072 points available during manual selection.

Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R6 Price and Availability

The Canon EOS R5 is going to be priced at Rs 339,995 while the EOS R6 will sport an MRP of Rs 215,995. Both prices are for the body only and include taxes. As of now, Canon India says the cameras are expected to be available from August, joining Canon's EOS R and EOS RP.
