As the country reels from the daily rise of COVID-19 cases, health officials and authorities are looking at technological solutions to the problem. Mumbai, one of the worst hit cities in terms of rising cases, is deploying ‘smart helmets’ to combat the spread of the disease. These 'smart helmets' are essentially portable thermal scanners that help health workers and officials record temperatures of a large group of people much faster and easier. These scanners were previously used to combat the pandemic in places like China, Italy and Dubai.
Medical volunteers have talked about how it takes about three hours to screen around 300 people and with around 20,000 people living in densely populated slums, the task becomes almost impossible. But, with the rise of these portable thermal scanners, medical volunteers can now just ask people to walk out of their homes and the rise in cases that can be screened rises to about 6000 people in just two and a half hours.
Mumbai and Pune receive high-tech 'smart helmets' to combat COVID-19 spreadThese helmets have been donated to the designated authorities in Mumbai and Pune and will go a long way in helping the two pandemic ravaged cities to combat the virus. The only drawback to the good news is that there are only two helmets in use in each city. This could delay identification of the virus by some time. And, it’s not like these helmets come cheap either, as each helmet comes at a cost of Rs 6,00,000.
