Indian smartphone market bounces back after lockdown slump by posting record shipments in Q3 2020

The Indian smartphone market has reportedly bounced back after the slump during the lockdown period. Smartphone shipments in India hit 50 million units in Q3 2020, according to a report by Canalys, which is a record high for the market. This comes after shipments fell by almost 50 per cent during Q2 2020 when the lockdown was imposed by the government to curb the spread of COVID-19.

The report states the market grew 8% year-over-year in Q3 2020. Same time last year, India saw shipments tallying up to 46.2 million units. The Indo-China clash at the border also had its effects felt in the market after Chinese smartphone shipments fell to 74% after hitting 76% a year ago.

The top 5 players in the market remain the same, with some shuffling happening to the market share, according to the report. Xiaomi continues to lead at the top, shipping over 13.1 million units, and achieving a majority 26.1% market share in Q3 2020.

Samsung came in a close second, shipping 10.2 million units and holding 20.4% market share, followed by Vivo (8.8 million units), Realme (8.7 million units) and Oppo (6.1 million units).

In the premium segment, Apple posted a double-digit growth after the launch of its online store and deep discounts. The Cupertino giant reportedly shipped 800,000 iPhones in India.

With the festive season still on in India, there’s a lot more growth expected in the market. The iPhone 12 series launch is around the corner, while Diwali promotions for the major players are expected to improve sales even further.
