Apple has pulled the plug on its original HomePod smart speaker - its first Siri-powered smart speaker that debuted four years ago. The company will instead focus on the smaller version- HomePod mini, that launched last year.
There is no official word on whether the company is planning to upgrade or replace the original HomePod, neither we've heard any rumour about so. As of now, you will be able to buy it from Apple stores, given there are stocks in your region.
The original HomePod has been in the market for quite some time and it received rave reviews for its audio performance for its size. Although its $349 price tag did keep it out of the hands of the masses, and the duty was taken over by the smaller $99 HomePod mini last year.
However, the larger HomePod offers a fuller and louder sound, thanks to the audio engineering efforts that took Apple five years to achieve the mastery in its audio performance.
Apple's statement on HomePod's discontinuationApple told TechCrunch, "HomePod mini has been a hit since its debut last fall, offering customers amazing sound, an intelligent assistant, and smart home control all for just $99. We are focusing our efforts on HomePod mini. We are discontinuing the original HomePod, it will continue to be available while supplies last through the Apple Online Store, Apple Retail Stores, and Apple Authorized Resellers. Apple will provide HomePod customers with software updates and service and support through Apple Care."
The Cupertino giant tells that it will direct its focus on the mini going forward. Sales number have suggested that more customers favour a cheaper smart speaker and audio quality isn't their primary preference while buying, so it makes sense for Apple to take this route.
However, the year has just started and we might hear some relevant announcements in the upcoming events throughout the year.
