Samsung UFS 4.0

Samsung has got JEDEC’s stamp of approval for the UFS 4.0 development. The company claims to have differentiation in terms of the controller design used in the new UFS standard.

UFS 4.0 is said to support speeds of up to 23.2Gbps per lane, which is 2x the speed of UFS 3.1. The company believes this “much bandwidth is perfect for 5G smartphones requiring huge amounts of data processing, and is also expected to be adopted in future automotive applications, AR, and VR as well”.

Samsung is using its in-house-made V-NAND and controller to drive sequential read speed of up to 4,200MB/s and sequential write speed of up to 2,800MB/s.

As for power efficiency, the results are again rosy with a sequential read speed of 6.0MB/s per mA, which makes UFS 4.0 46% better over the predecessor.

The efficiency also extends to the packaging of the new UFS which measures 11mm x 13mm x 1mm in dimensions.

Samsung tells us that UFS 4.0 storage will be available in sizes of up to 1TB and that it will be hitting the factory floor in Q3 of 2022. So, we may get to see UFS 4.0 phones and other devices later this year or early next year.
