Fingerprint scanners on smartphones have undoubtedly gone a long way in enhancing the user’s security. This technology is fairly common now, with it being available in smartphones across different price ranges. While the more affordable smartphones utilise optical sensors, others use ultrasonic fingerprint scanners to offer a more premium experience. Now, Samsung is looking to take your security a step further by turning the entire display into one giant fingerprint scanner.
Samsung announces its all-screen fingerprint scannerAt the recent International Meeting of Information Display (IMID), Samsung revealed that it plans to launch an all-in-one OLED display 2.0. ISORG, a French organisation that speclialises in Organic Photo Diode (OPD) technology, stated that Samsung will be using a multi-fingerprint sensing technology on the display.
Speaking about the same, Dieter May, who is the CEO of ISORG, said “With the OPD technology, you can either use four finger authentication, raising security 2500 million times, or you can use “point to open” on security on single specific apps. Touch that app and it even confirms who you are before opening the app”.
How will the all-screen fingerprint scanner work? The OLED display will work as one giant fingerprint scanner, which means that you can place your finger anywhere on the screen in order for it to unlock. According to Samsung, this screen will also be equipped with biosensors that will monitor your blood sugar levels as well as your blood pressure. It will also contain 5G antennae.
We may see this technology sometime in 2025. As this is a product from Samsung Display, we may even see that year’s Apple iPhone utilise it, along with other smartphones that want to offer high-end flagships that compete with these brands.
