All 2020 Apple iPhone models could support 5G: Report

If information circulating the internet is to be believed, then all the three iPhones being launched in 2020 will support 5G. The information comes from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo via MacRumors. Kuo had originally said that two of the three iPhones that would be launched in 2020 would support 5G. But he now believes that Apple will offer 5G on all models. This will be done to better compete with lower-cost 5G Android smartphones. Kuo says that after the Intel acquisition, Apple has more resources for developing the 5G iPhone.

Kuo says, “We now believe that all three new 2H20 iPhone models will support 5G for the following reasons. (1) Apple has more resource for developing the 5G iPhone after the acquisition of Intel baseband business. (2) We expect that the prices of 5G Android smartphones will decline to $249-349 USD in 2H20. We believe that 5G Android smartphones, which will be sold at $249-349 USD, will only support Sub-6GHz. But the key is that consumers will think that 5G is the necessary function in 2H20. Therefore, iPhone models which will be sold at higher prices have to support 5G for winning more subsidies from mobile operators and consumers' purchase intention. (3) Boosting 5G developments could benefit Apple's AR ecosystem.”

The iPhones are expected to support the sub-6GHz 5G found worldwide. The 2020 iPhones are also expected to come in new sizes. Kuo said that Apple would release 5.4-inch, 6.1-inch, and 6.7-inch iPhones with OLED displays. The 2019 iPhones are expected to be announced in September 2019.

On April 26, Apple confirmed its acquisition of Intel’s smartphone modem business. Apple and Intel have signed an agreement for Apple to acquire “the majority” of Intel’s smartphone modem business. The deal, which is valued at $1 billion, is expected to be closed in the fourth quarter of 2019, Apple said. The transaction, however, is subject to regulatory approvals and other customary conditions, including works council and other relevant consultations in certain jurisdictions. Reliance Jio is now the largest telecom operator in India

In just three years, Reliance Jio has become the largest telecom provider in India. The telecom network’s subscriber base grew to 331.3 million in second quarter of 2019. The top spot came at the expense of Vodafone Idea Ltd., which quickly lost customers, indicating a drop in subscriber base from 334.1 million to 320 million.

The company launched by Mukesh Ambani grew at a rapid pace fuelled by $36 million in spending and driving down data tariffs to make internet connectivity more accessible to people. Data tariff in India is now the lowest in the world at $0.6 per GB as compared to the $12.37 per GB in the US.

The entry of Jio in 2016 also gave rise to an intense price war between the telecom operators, which also led to a fair amount of consolidation in the market. A handful of operators, including Aircel and Anil Ambani’s Reliance Communications, also shut shop while Vodafone India and Idea underwent a merger to stay competitive. Airtel too had to invest in 4G infrastructure, migrating completely from 3G.

In figures released on Friday, Jio announced that it took the lead position in the Indian telecom market while Vodafone Idea’s market share declined. Vodafone cited reasons of introduction of ‘service validity vouchers’ in the previous quarters. However, the company said it introduced bigger data bundles at Rs 229 offering unlimited calls, and 2 to 2.5GB data per day.

Nokia 91 PureView speculated to be launched in Q4: 5G, better cameras, and Snapdragon 855

HMD Global soft-launched the Nokia 9 PureView in India on July 10. The company announced the price and availability of the smartphone without any event or pomp and show. Now, in the same month, rumours have started pouring in about a successor: the Nokia 9.1 PureView. It is being speculated that the new flagship could be launched in Q4 of 2019 with better cameras and a more powerful chipset.

According to NokiaPowerUser, the Nokia 9.1 PureView could be launched in Q4 this year. Earlier, it was reported that the smartphone might be launched in Q3 but the latest report says that the launch has been delayed to Q4. It is being said that the delay is due to some unresolved issues in certain aspects of the phone, such as its camera.

The report says, “Nokia 9.1 testing and feedback cycle has HMD development team focused on resolving some issues related to some of the major USPs of the smartphone, the camera being one of them. HMD doesn’t want to hurry and wants to avoid the bad press that Nokia 9 PureView faced initially.”

On the design front, the Nokia 9.1 PureView is expected to adopt a punch-hole display. It is expected to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset. As for the operating system, it could come with Android Q out of the box.

Additionally, the Nokia 9.1 PureView is expected to have 5G support.

To recall, the Nokia 9 PureView features a 5.99-inch 2K p-OLED display with an 18:9 aspect ratio. The smartphone is powered by the Snapdragon 845 chipset, paired with 6GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage. However, the USP of Nokia 9 PureView is its camera setup, which consists of five Sony optic modules, each 12MP. Three of the modules feature monochrome sensors, while the other two are RGB sensors.

Hyundai Kona EV explodes, blows off garage door

In a rather anticlimactic development days after its big launch in India, a Hyundai Kona EV reportedly caught fire and exploded while it was parked inside a residential garage in Île Bizard, Montreal. According a report by CBC Canada, firefighters arrived at the place of the incident to put out the fire and investigate further. The explosion reportedly blew the garage door off its frame and sent it flying across the street. Fortunately, no one was injured.

Piero Cosentino, the owner of the electric car that exploded, said that he'd observed clouds of dark smoke arising from his garage on Friday afternoon (July 26). “As soon as I saw that, I immediately turned off the breaker,” Cosentino was quoted as saying to CBC. The owner reports that the incident was a close call at any rate. “If we were in front of the garage door, we could have been in the hospital.” The Hyundai Kona EV in question was reportedly purchased in March this year.

The damaged garage in which the Hyundai Kona EV was parked

According to Cosentino, the car was neither charging or plugged in at the time of the incident. Louise Desrosiers of the Montreal fire service believes there was no other factor inside the garage that could have contributed to the explosion. It's likely that the temperature of the battery in the Hyundai Kona EV suddenly rose, leading to an explosive reaction. The Kona EV sold in Canada employs a 64.0 kWh Lithium-ion polymer (LiPB) battery that's capable of producing 170kW.

The Hyundai Kona EV was launched in India earlier this month at a starting price of Rs 25.30 lakh. The Indian variant is equipped with a 39.2kWh lithium-ion battery, which, according to ARAI, is certified to deliver about 452 kilometres of driving range on a single charge. Though it's hard to say if the fire incident in Canada will perturb the EV's sales in India, it's sure to raise some eyebrows. The Hyundai Kona EV currently sells in India with an eight-year warranty on the battery in five colour options. You can read more about Hyundai's first EV for India here.
