LG C2 42 Review: Best small-screen OLED TV money can buy

The LG C2(42) is a very good option for anyone who is looking for a small-screen OLED TV. It offers all the goodness of a top-notch OLED at a size where there are rarely any good options available in the market. Be it gaming or watching movies, the LG C2 (42) is a very good option, and its size also makes it a viable choice for being used as a high-end gaming monitor.

The last few years have seen an uptick in the number of people looking to go the OLED way for their next big TV for their living room. However, the number of those looking to buy a smaller OLED panel TV as a secondary set for their home, or even as a monitor for their desktop PCs, is still not huge. This is mostly because good OLED panel monitors do not come cheap, and the TVs, well, usually do not come small.

The C2 (42) Evo OLED TV is LG's answer to such concerns, as it promises not just very good picture performance, and pixel-level dimming, but also brings to the table support for key gaming technologies like VRR, 120Hz refresh rate, G-Sync and more.

We've had the LG C2 (42) with us for a while now, giving us a decent idea about the device, and more importantly, enough insight to help us answer the most important question of them all: Is it worth your money? Read our review to find the answer to this question and more.

LG C2 (42): Display and Picture Quality

LG has been going big on OLED technology for years now and this has resulted in it launching some extremely good OLED TVs. Having used the C2 (42) for a while now, we can safely say, this new TV from LG definitely joins the list.

This is down to multiple reasons, and one of them is the company's use of Evo technology for the panel of the TV, which it is important to note, was restricted to LGs top of the line G1 range of OLED TVs up until last year. This technology improves the brightness of the panel through a new lighting element in the pixels themselves.

Now, the interesting thing is that the Evo technology used on the smaller 42-inch model of the LG C2 we're reviewing today is slightly different than the one that's used on the models that are 55-inch and above. As such, on the 42-inch model of the C2, the gains are not as pronounced as the bigger models, because LG has had to cram in millions of pixels into very little space. However, the use of Evo technology has allowed LG to at least help the 42-inch model match, and at times even surpass, the picture performance of last year's bigger LG C1 models.

(Peak luminance SDR)

Additionally, the presence of LG's new A9 Gen5 AI processor on the TV ensures that the C2 42 handles complicated scenes as well as video processing and the upscaling of low-resolution content really well. Plus, you also get support for HDR, HDR10 Pro, HLG and Dolby Vision. Although, there is no HDR10+, which may actually not be a big miss considering most content on streaming sites these days is mastered for Dolby Vision.

So in day-to-day use, you'd notice the AI processing and the evo branded OLED panel of the TV coming together to push out some great visuals, with very good contrast, dynamic range and brightness peaks to wow. In fact, the performance is so good, that in bright scenes you can figure out the difference between really bright and moderately bright parts of the frame -- all without the loss of any details. Darker scenes too are handled well by the TV, and since the panel uses self-emitting pixels to create visuals, there is also no blooming or halo effect to ruin the experience.

(Peak luminance HDR)

Set to the Filmmaker mode to simulate HDR performance, the LG C2 (42) also performed really well in terms of colour reproduction, with skin tones also proving to be quite accurate. These findings were corroborated by the results of the Calman tests we ran on the TV, as the C2 (42) clocked some really impressive numbers.

Spectracal C6 Colorimeter paired with Calman Ultimate showed the TV clocking very good average DeltaE figures in the above-mentioned colour profile, with the max Delta error also at acceptable levels. The EOTF curve generated for the Filmmaker mode also showed just how well the TV is calibrated to handle dark and bright sequences, with the TV also showing good performance in maintaining a strong RGB balance in tests.

(Colour accuracy HDR)

Gamut coverage was also on point, with the TV covering about 130 per cent of the BT.709 colour space. Results for the slightly more challenging DCI-P3 were close to 100 per cent, with the panel also covering around 70 per cent of the BT.2020 colour space. Even in the luminance tests, we got really good results, with the LG C2 (42) reaching a peak of 292 nits in the SDR tests, and 750 nits when tested for HDR.

(RGB Balance and EOTF curve)

LG C2(42) Gaming

Apart from being a very good TV for watching movies and consuming multimedia content, the 42-inch LG C2 also makes for a very good TV (alternatively a monitor) for gaming. There's support for a lot of gaming first features, such as 4K 120Hz, VRR and G-Sync/FreeSync support. There's also support for ALLM for decreased latency to improve gaming experiences. Interestingly, all these features are supported on all four HDMI 2.1 ports, of the TV, making it a very good choice if you have multiple devices that can take advantage of this technology.

All of these features combine to create immersive gaming experiences, and backed by the TV's rich handling of colours and deep blacks, we found the LG C2(42) taking our breath away when running HDR-ready games such as Dirt 5 or Assassin's Creed Valhalla.

LG C2(42) Audio

LG C2(42) comes with 40W down-firing stereo speakers, so in theory, the sound quality on the TV shouldn't be great. But reviewing the TV I found out that was definitely not the case. Despite its small frame, the LG C2(42) manages to sound good enough for the most part. While it may not be good enough for a living room set-up, this OLED TV will definitely be good enough if you plan to keep it in a smaller room.

However, if the above-par audio experience is what you're looking for, then investing in a decent soundbar is recommended. But like we mentioned above, the Dolby Atmos supporting speakers on the TV should do the trick even if you don't.

LG C2 (42): Should you buy it?

The LG C2(42) is a very good option for anyone who is looking for a small-screen OLED TV. It offers all the goodness of a top-notch OLED at a size where there are rarely any good options available in the market.

Be it gaming or watching movies, the LG C2 (42) is a great option for all that you may want to use it for, and its size also makes it a viable choice for being used as a high-end gaming monitor. However, it is this size that also ends up being the biggest headache for the TV.

Compared to the bigger-sized models of the C2, this 42-inch model does not enjoy the same generational benefits in the display department and moreover does not also come at a price that makes it a very enticing offering. Making this one a TV that you can skip for a larger variant of the LG C2 itself or maybe an OLED from the Sony A80K line-up. Unless of course, you need a small-screen TV for your bedroom or a high-end OLED monitor for your desktop. In that case, the LG C2(42) may just be the perfect TV for you.

Google to redesign Play Store for tablets, foldables, and Chromebooks: Whats new

Google plans to redesign Play Store's interface for tablets and foldables by 2023, and the company has shared a glimpse of what we can expect. Although it has disclosed one software aspect, this shows Google's overall commitment to tablets. Google has detailed some features coming to the app store on tablets, foldables, and Chromebooks, and the company gave insights into the update via some screenshots and clips.

Android Tablet 2023

Google shared a single (low-resolution) picture highlighting the changes coming to the Play Store for tablets and foldables in 2023. The current Play Store tablet design is nothing but the Play Store for smartphones stretched for a big screen. Thus, the new upgrade would be a significant overhaul. Google shared the screenshots offering the description and videos related to the update directly and stated that this is a "content-forward approach." In addition, the company informed its users that this would merely be a visual change and would not impact the app promotions. The screenshot shared by Google also revealed the presence of a dedicated Kids section, situated at the bottom of the left sidebar with the Games, Apps, Books, and Offers.

An old Android tablet UI

Google is also providing developers with resources and tips on making the best of their apps, including capturing as many screenshots as possible and promoting using imagery rather than a block of texts. The Play Store upgrade for large-screen devices would likely align with the release of the Pixel Tablet early next year, or it can even be with the Pixel Fold, which will arrive before the end of 2023's first quarter. More details about this UI facelift will be revealed in the months leading to the release of the company's flagship tablet.

Flipverse UI also offers 2D static product catalogs but they would be exhibited in 3D-rendered store displays. You, the user will get to ‘walk’ around the store and browse. Besides products, Flipverse will also try to entice visitors with games, contests, launch events, mystery boxes, and feature drops. So, you see how this Web 3.0 interface differs from the much more traditional Web2.0 based Flipkart that we are used to.

Where to access Flipverse?

Flipverse will be available on FireDrops, an eCommerce platform within Flipkart. Phase 1 of Flipverse is currently being rolled out on Android only. That means you can find it on the Flipkart app for Android or via web browsers.

Which all branded products will be available on Flipverse?

So far, brands like Puma, Noise, Nivea, Lavie, Tokyo Talkies, Campus, VIP, Ajmal Perfumes, Himalaya, and Butterfly India are coming to Flipverse.

Naren Ravula, VP and Head, Product Strategy and Deployment, Flipkart Labs, said, “The future growth of e-commerce will be influenced by the immersive technologies of today, and Metaverse is one of the significant revolutions in this arena with immense potential. The launch of Flipverse will continue to have an impact on innovative industries like e-commerce and enhance the customer experience while delivering a gamified and an immersive shopping experience, especially in light of the adoption of the metaverse and web3 platforms by multiple brands in India. By providing customers with access to their preferred brands, offers, SuperCoins, and digital collectibles, we are aiming to improve their shopping experiences in a virtual and immersive setting.”

Sandeep Nailwal, Co-Founder of Polygon, said, “While we have only just begun to scratch the surface of what's possible in the metaverse, we see e-commerce as one of the killer use cases. Combining top brands with Flipkart's e-commerce expertise in a virtual environment stands to revolutionize online retail as we know it. Flipverse will be a vibrant, visible expression of the metaverse, and I'm proud that this activation is taking place on Polygon.”

Anand Venkateswaran, CEO of eDAO, said, “A metaverse must enable a tangible connection for consumers with brands and creators. It must function as a portal to new experiences  and engagement loops. With partners like GuardianLink and Surreal Events, Flipverse does all this in just its first iteration. Flipverse can unlock much value over time, but for Diwali, we simply optimized for delight. Bringing creative and technical heft to Flipkart’s vision is a privilege for eDAO.”

FIFA 23 World Cup Mode leaked ahead of the official launch: Heres what it reveals

EA Sports have not officially launched the World Cup mode in FIFA 23, but fans were surprised to note that certain players could access the World Cup Online Quickplay's mode via Ultimate Team through a leak ahead of the launch. VGC reported that Youtuber NickRTFM managed to play a couple of matches using the Ultimate Team by selecting Multiplayer Activities - World Cup Online Quickplay, and then going back to play Online Tournaments.

FIFA 23 WC mode

The glitch only works on the PS5, so a few PlayStation users were the lucky ones to access the mode thanks to this leak. However, EA will likely fix this leak soon and send out an update for players to download the new mode. Usually, every time during a World Cup, the EA Sports FIFA game usually releases a World Cup tournament mode for offline and online gaming. FIFA 23 launched about a week ago, and it appears that this could attract more users towards the game.

FIFA 23 WC mode

The game will likely announce and release the World Cup mode close to the actual tournament. Still even before that, EA recently reported that the game made the series' most significant launch period, with over 10.3 million players alone in the first week. EA Sports has seemingly gone all-out in this final outing for the franchise, as the games will release under the EA Sports FC banner next year. It will be astonishing how the PlayStation community responds to the change and whether FIFA will choose to lease its license to another publisher making FIFA a challenger to EA FC.  We’ll see.

Spotify could soon launch a new Platinum plan: Here are its expected features

One of the world's most popular audio streaming services, Spotify, could be on the verge of releasing a new subscription plan. The plan, which might be called 'Platinum,' has been reportedly in development for almost two years. Recently, a 9To5Mac reader received the details about the purported plan in a survey sent to him by Spotify after cancelling his decade-long subscription. While the survey contained the expected price of the plan, it also included all the new features that could be released with it.

Spotify user received details of the Platinum pack in a survey

Spotify

Per the report published on October 14, 2022, a 9To5Mac reader, Drew, cancelled his 10-year-old Spotify subscription on the day to get a membership of Apple Music. However, Spotify shared a survey with Drew, including details about possible new plans and asked the user if he would consider subscribing back to Spotify in the next 30 days. The possible plan included in the survey was none other than the Spotify Platinum HiFi plan. Apparently, the survey listed the new plan's price to be $19.99 per month for one account.

Drew also received the list of features included in the Spotify Platinum plan, including HiFi, Studio Sound, Headphone Tuner and more. The publication also says that the styling of the survey received by Drew matches Spotify's typography, making it legitimate. Below is the complete list of all the features that the Spotify Platinum plan could feature.

HiFi Studio Sound Headphone Tuner Audio Insights Library Pro Playlist Pro Limited-ad Spotify podcasts Will users pay $19.99 per month for the Spotify Platinum pack?

Spotify

Although the features look great, competitors like Apple provide lossless music and Spatial Audio in student/individual plans that cost $5.99/9.99 per month. Hence, even with high-fidelity audio in the Platinum pack, Spotify might not be able to justify the ask that is effectively double. It is important to note that the launch date or timeline of the Platinum pack is not known yet. However, it should arrive in India with an adjusted price, like other Spotify plans active in the country.

Google brings Passkeys support to Chrome and Android devices: Here is everything you need to know

Google has reinforced its commitment towards passwordless smartphone usage by releasing support for passkey login to Chrome and Android. Earlier this year, Google was among the three tech giants that announced they’re working on passwordless sign-in features, including Microsoft and Apple. Going forward, users can create and use passkeys on Android devices. In addition, developers can build passkey support on their sites for users visiting via Chrome. Passkeys are the next big step towards smartphone security as they replace passwords and cannot be reused.

What is a passkey?

Google Passkeys

As per the Android Developers blog, “Passkeys follow already familiar UX patterns, and build on the existing experience of password autofill. For end-users." Using a passkey is similar to using a password, except the phone confirms whether it is actually the user by asking for another credential.

Adding to it, the blog explains, “Passkeys on users’ phones and computers are backed up and synced through the cloud to prevent lockouts in the case of device loss.” Users will also be able to use passkeys on their phones to sign in to websites and apps on other nearby devices.

In simple words, a passkey is a type of login credential that has the potential to replace passwords. Most importantly, a passkey only works on a particular device unless the user scans a QR code for signing in on another device after verifying via Face ID or fingerprint scanners. To avoid reuse, passkeys are created using public key cryptography, meaning each passkey is unique and encrypted. Further, with passkeys, users don’t need to remember the multiple passwords they’ve set for websites, as they can sign in using one passkey.

How to sign in to a website using a passkey?

Google Passkeys

First, an end user must create a passkey by confirming the passkey account information and presenting their screen lock, face or fingerprint. Once the passkey is created, users can log in by selecting the account they want to sign in to and present their biometrics. Since the passkeys are stored offline on the smartphone, users don’t have to worry about remembering several passwords.

Apart from this, a passkey on the phone can also be used to sign in on a nearby device. This is where the cross-platform compatibility of the technology comes in, as an Android user can sign in to a passkey-supported website using the Safari web browser on a Mac. Apple iOS 16 and macOS Ventura also support the technology, which will be rolled out to the masses this year.
