Exclusive: This is what the Nokia TV launching as Flipkart Unique looks like

If you are looking to invest in a new smart TV, then we’d say hold your horses. Flipkart has confirmed to us that Nokia is launching its smart TV running on Android as a Flipkart Unique product, and the sound for the upcoming TV will be powered by JBL Audio. From the picture above, you have a glimpse of what the TV will look like. We can see the sound output from the TV will be handled by JBL sound system speakers. From the image, it is also clear that the TV will have front-firing speakers.

One of the weakest elements in TVs these days is the audio output. Through the partnership with JBL, customers can expect acoustics engineered by JBL along with sound tuning as per JBL standards on the upcoming Nokia TV. Flipkart has confirmed to Digit that the TV will come with features like Clear Vocal Tones and Minimal Harmonic Distortion. JBL speakers are known for superior sound fidelity and hence we expect the Nokia TV to deliver on the promise. In addition to speakers from JBL, the TV also brings with it Dolby Audio & DTS TruSurround Sound which is said to enhance your TV viewing experience. With Dolby Audio & DTS TruSurround, the TV will be able to decode high fidelity audio and play it back for you from the TVs JBL powered speakers. With DTS TruSurround the TV will be able to decode 5.1 surround sound and play it back to you via the TVs JBL speakers as well.

Moving to other specifications of the Nokia TV, it is a 55-inch TV with a 4K resolution. In an earlier story we reported, Mr Vipul Mehrotra, Vice President, Nokia Brand Partnerships said, “We are delighted that Flipkart, the leading e-commerce company in the country, will bring the first-ever Nokia branded Smart TVs to India. Today marks the start of an exciting new chapter for the Nokia brand in a new category.”

You need to watch these films and shows on our weekly binge list

It’s the end of another long week and it’s been a tough one. 5 full working days and we’re sure a ton of you guys are working through the weekend (just like we are) so for those who are chilling this Saturday and Sunday, here’s a bunch of stuff you can check out for an awesome time.

Netflix

Toys that made us

Like a lot of us who grew up in the late 80’s and early 90’s, all we had to entertain ourselves were our toys. This series on Netflix is literally a nostalgia explosion for people like us. The first season gave us some excellent episodes like the Masters of the Universe one and this third season looks to be no different.

End of the F***ing world

The second season of this surreal show is now airing on Netflix and we urge you to check it out. The first season ended on a violent end and this season promises to be no different. It’s time to take the ultimate road trip with James and Alyssa.

Bikram

An excellent documentary on the fraud master that is Bikram Chaudhary, Bikram takes a deeper look at the nonsense pedaled by the conman and how he actually got away with sexual harassment. The documentary is a terrifying look at how conmen can get away with almost anything.

Hotstar

Infinity War

You know you’re going to be watching this, but we’ll include it here anyway. The culmination of a decade of films, Infinity War is the first in a two part story that chronicles the final battle between the Avengers and the mighty Thanos.

Endgame

As I said before, we all know you guys are going to be watching this eagerly but we had to include this on our list. The final film in Marvel’s 10 year journey, Endgame is the perfect way to close out the MCU. Phase 4 is going to be a ‘woke’ disaster and this is probably the last good Marvel movie we’ll be getting. So enjoy it while you can.

The kid who would be king

An excellent riff on the ancient Arthurian legend, The kid who would be king is one of those children’s films that have all but disappeared. Whatever happened to films for young boys, I wonder? With objectively bad films like the Hunger Games hogging up screens, The kid who would be king is breath of fresh air in a stale industry.

Prime Video

The man from U.N.C.L.E

A Guy Ritchie film, The man From U.N.C.L.E is a reboot of a the show of the same name. It premiered in 1964 and went on to become one of the most beloved spy dramas on TV. This film does the same but modernizes it for a 2019 audience. Check it out for hilarious dialogue between Arnie Hamner and Henry Cavill.

Man on Fire

Denzel Washington is in form here as he plays the character of man broken by the world only to find hope and a reason for living. A tight and engrossing thriller, Man on Fire is one of those revenge films that will have you rooting for the good guy all the way. Plus, Denzel oozes cool in this film.

Jeepers Creepers 3

The first two films in this series were some of the best creature-features in the past 20 years. The third isn’t as good as the first two but it is a treat to have the Creeper back in our lives. We’ll always recommend a film that has an interesting and vicious creature.

Twitter will now let you Hide Replies, rolls out Tweet scheduling support on web app

Twitter is finally bringing some anticipated changes to its micro-blogging platform. The first new feature making its way to the platform is the ability to hide replies on a tweet. The option was rumoured to hit the platform much earlier, but it is finally rolling out now globally. As the name suggests, the option enables hiding replies on a tweet and is aimed at giving users more control over their conversations. In addition, the social media platform is also rolling out the option to schedule tweets for its users on the web app. This is a highly requested feature that was available for Tweetdeck users.

The hide replies option works for everyone and anyone who replies to your tweets can also hide the replies that they receive on their replies. “Here’s how it works. Anyone can choose to hide replies to their Tweets. Everyone can see and engage with hidden replies by tapping the grey icon that will appear on the Tweets. This way, you have more control over the conversations you start, but people can still see the entire conversation,” explains Twitter in a blog post. The option is now available for Twitter users on iOS, Android, Twitter Lite and for Twitter on the web.

As for the option to schedule posts on Twitter, the option is being rolled out for users on the web. However, the feature seems to be currently available for limited users since the company says it is currently ‘experimenting’ with it. From the small video demo posted on Twitter, those accounts who get the scheduling option will be able to use the feature from the three-dot menu on the bottom bar. It will prompt users to set their desired date and time and as mentioned earlier, it is available only for Twitter users on the web.

The option to hide replies is now available to everyone around the world. After a successful experiment, we found that it’s a useful way to manage conversations and hide distracting, off-topic replies. Here's more on what we learned: https://t.co/lvZXuzE3ir

FASTag: Everything you need to know before Indias electronic toll system becomes mandatory on December 1

If you often travel from one Indian city to another by road, then there’s a good chance you’ve come across the name FASTag. You might have seen it on a sign board at several tollgates on many Indian highways. In any case, FASTag is an electronic toll collection system operated by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). Since its first pilot project in 2014, more and more highways have started adopting it as an alternative to cash payment. Since FASTag is an automated payment system that’s faster and more efficient than cash transactions, its benefits are finally being recognised by the government. For this very reason, payment through FASTag is going to be made mandatory for all road users in India starting December 1.

Why should you care?

Cash transactions at tollgates take time, which means you usually end up waiting in a long queue at many points on the highway. Because FASTag significantly reduces the time taken to collect toll from road users, the Government of India (GOI) recently decided to make it mandatory at all highway tollgates that support FASTag from the first day of December. This means that you’ll have to sign up for payment through FASTag to get your vehicle across tollgates, or be ready to pay twice the toll charge in cash.

How does it work?

The reason the new system is called FASTag is because toll collection happens using an electronic tag, which the user is required to affix to the inside of their vehicle’s windscreen. This tag employs a wireless technology called RFID (radio frequency identification) to communicate with an automated barrier at each tollgate. Each tag comes with its own prepaid account with a minimum balance. When a motorist approaches a FASTag-supported tollgate, the automated barrier will read from the user’s tag wirelessly and deduct the necessary toll amount before opening. This way, the user doesn’t have to roll their window down and dig into their wallets for cash, thus saving time.

How do you sign up for FASTag?

To enable faster adoption, NHAI has allowed many national banks and state-run oil marketing companies to act as official tag issuers. This means you can sign up for FASTag from ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, State Bank of India, Axis Bank and, more recently, Airtel Payments Bank and PAYTM Payments Bank. Click here to view the complete list of tag-issuing banks. You should also be able to sign up for FASTag from a nearby fuel pump that’s operated by IOC, Bharat Petroleum, or Hiindustan Petroleum. According to the FAQ page on Airtel’s website, each tag comes with a renewable validity of 5 years.

Because FASTag is built on an automated infrastructure, there are some one-time expenses involved in the joining process apart from the money spent regularly on toll. There’s a one-time ‘tag joining fee’ of Rs 100 (including all taxes) and a one-time ‘security deposit amount’ of Rs 200 for private cars, vans, and other mini-light commercial vehicles. You can find the complete price list (for all vehicle types) with the list of any extra fees that will be levied here. Because each tag is linked to a prepaid account that can be topped up online or offline, you’ll be asked to maintain a ‘threshold amount’ of Rs 150 as long as you use FASTag.

Many of these official tag issuers promise a cashback offer on transacting using their tag. ICICI Bank, for example, claims that you “can avail cashback of 2.5% on all Toll payments at the national highways only, using FASTag in FY 2019-20”. As of September 2019, payment through FASTag is supported at over 500 national and state highway tollgates. We, at Digit, believe that the mandate to switch to FASTag by December 1 at all supported tollgates is a step in the right direction. We expect to see a significant reduction in time and fuel spent on the highway.

Oppo may be developing its own mobile chipset, the Oppo M1

Oppo could be looking to join the likes of Apple, Samsung and Huawei in manufacturing an in-house chipset. The company has been spending a lot on research and development lately. Hence, this piece of information is likely to be true. Oppo’s own mobile processor could be called the “Oppo M1.” The Chinese phone manufacturer has reportedly filed a trademark application on November 20 at the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). The description of the trademark says it is for or related to a mobile processor.

Oppo is reported to have approached engineers from Unisoc (Spreadtrum) and MediaTek. The trademark filing was first reported by LetsGoDigital. The website claims that Oppo may reveal details about the M1 mobile processor at MWC 2020. If not, the company could also announce the Oppo M1 at next year’s edition of Semicon China scheduled to be held in March. However, the Oppo M1 mobile processor could be launched later in the year, during the Mobile World Congress, Shanghai.

Oppo’s entry into the chip business is expected to bring big changes to its mobile phones since an in-house chip can ensure better communication between the company’s products. Oppo recently revealed ColorOS 7 in China. The Android 10-based Oppo OS will be unveiled in India on November 26. ColorOS 7 also brings obvious features such as an improved system performance, and a feature called Beauty Mode 2.0.

ColorOS 7 comes with a new modern UI, which is said to be cleaner with visually comfortable colour tones. The new OS also brings the option to customise app icons including the shape and size. It also brings a system-wide dark mode and new Art+ Wallpapers that aren't just live but also animate based on fingertip touches.
