11-year old kid files PIL asking Bombay High Court to ban PUBG in Maharashtra

Highlights: The 11-year old kid Ahad has reportedly filed a PIL,  moving the Bombay high court to ban PUBG. His PIL reads that the game promotes “violence, murder, aggression, looting, gaming addiction and cyber bullying.” PUBG Mobile, without a doubt, is nothing short of a new cultural phenomenon. The game has surpassed 30 million daily active players and even the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, referred to it in a recent event while addressing concerns about technology and its use among kids. While the game is fun, it is said to be addictive for some people and has been banned from primary schools in Gujarat. Now, PTI reports that an 11-year old kid, Ahad Nizam, has filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), moving the Bombay high court to ban the online multiplayer title in the state. This comes after Nizam wrote a strongly worded letter to the Maharashtra government asking a ban to be implemented on it but didn’t get a response.  As per the report, PIL filed by Nizam, via his mother, reiterates the kid’s stance on the gaming title. He says that the game promotes gaming addiction, violence and cyberbullying, and the HC should direct the Maharashtra government to ban it. The PIL might come up for hearing before a division bench headed by Chief Justice N H Patil. "The petition has also sought a direction to the central government to form an Online Ethics Review Committee for periodical checking of such violence-oriented online content," petitioner's lawyer Tanveer Nizam said. We previously came across a report that the letter Ahad previously sent to the Maharashtra Govt. is said to be an  "appeal to forthwith ban online game PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds [PUBG] as it promotes immoral conduct such as violence, murder, aggression, looting, gaming addiction and cyberbullying."  The battle royale game is so well known that the Prime Minister of India recently referred to it. In an event called “Pariksha pe Charcha 2.0” (Discussions on Exams 2.0), the mother of a class-IX student said that her son is so inclined towards online gaming that it is affecting his studies. She asked the PM for a solution for this to which Modi replied,  “Ye PUBG wala hai kya?” (Is he one of the PUBG players?). As soon as he said the words, the crowd at the event burst out into applause.  Related Reads:  Ban PUBG, 11-year old appeals to Maharashtra Govt as it promotes “gaming addiction, violence and cyber bullying" “PUBG Wala hai kya?” asks PM Modi addressing online gaming during Pariksha Pe Charcha event PUBG Mobile ban sought in J&K as Students Association deems it more addictive than drugs PUBG Mobile 0.11.0 Beta update goes live, introduces RE2: Sunset zombie mode, new weather for Vikendi and more

Panasonic Lumix S1 and S1R launched

Panasonic had created quite a ruckus at Photokina 2018 when they announced the Panasonic Lumix S1 and S1R full frame mirrorless cameras. The reason for the excitement (and bewilderment) stems from the fact that Panasonic has been a key proponent of the Micro Four Thirds sensor format. The company didn’t announce much in the way of details or availability, but unlike the announcement, the company has silently launched the cameras. The Panasonic Lumix S1 sports a 24.2-megapixel sensor while the S1R is a resolution beast, with a 47.3-megapixel sensor. Both the cameras come with the new L-mount which is the result of the L-Mount Alliance between Panasonic, Leica and Sigma. Both the cameras sport in-body image stabilization. Both the cameras also share the same combination of dual storage, an XQD card slot alongside an SD card with UHS-II compliance. The viewfinder on both the cameras sports a resolution of 5.76 million dots and can be switched from the standard 60fps refresh rate to a 120fps refresh rate. The Panasonic Lumix S1 is aimed at those individuals who dabble in both film and photography. The sensor resolution offers the sweet spot for both moving and still images. In terms of photography, while you do get the standard 24-megapixel image, you can switch over to the high-resolution mode and get a whopping 96-megapixel image. This the camera achieved by shifting the sensor by a few pixels for multiple photos. In terms of video, you get 4K recording at 30fps with no time limit (or for 24fps) while 4K @60fps is limited to 30 minutes of recording at a time. The Panasonic Lumix S1R, on the other hand, has a massive 47.7-megapixel sensor. The video capabilities remain mostly the same as the S1, with a few exceptions. For example, the 4K mode on the S1R offers a cropped output instead of a utilizing the full sensor like on the S1. The super-resolution mode on the S1R delivers images with a resolution of 187 megapixels. The Panasonic Lumix S1 and Lumix S1R shoot at 6fps with AF tracking and 9FPS in Single AF mode.  The Panasonic Lumix will retail for $2,499 (body only) or $3,399 with a 24-105mm lens. The S1R body costs $3,699 or $4,599 with the same lens. Additionally, Panasonic is also launching two additional lenses, the 50mm f/1.4 S Pro and 70-200mm f/4.0 S Pro for $2299 and $1699 respectively. The cameras go on sale in the U.S. today, with no word on India availability yet.

Huawei foldable smartphone teased to launch at MWC 2019, could come with 5G support

Highlights: Huawei hints at a foldable phone launch during MWC 2019. The company will be hosting an event on February 24 in Barcelona The upcoming foldable device is also speculated to also come with 5G support.   Alongside Samsung, Huawei was among the first smartphone makers gunning to launch a foldable smartphone. Very little was known about the company's plans or its foldable device but Huawei has now officially announced an event in Barcelona that will be held ahead of MWC 2019. where it is expected to launch a foldable smartphone. The foldable smartphone is also speculated to come with 5G support. The development comes recently after a Dutch website released the 3D renders of Huawei’s alleged foldable phone. As per the renders, the phone could sport a large display, which could be bigger than the Galaxy Fold. Unlike the Galaxy Fold that folds inwards, hiding the large display, Huawei’s phone is touted to fold like a clamshell. This means that it could have just one foldable display. The Huawei foldable phone could be equipped with a Balong 5000 chipset, and if this turns out to be true, it will have 5G capabilities. It is also assumed that the foldable phone will be powered by the Kirin 980 chipset with Dual NPU. Last year, Walter Ji, President, Huawei Western Europe Consumer Business Group talked about company’s plan for 2019. The executive spoke to a German publication and shared the roadmap of what the Chinese smartphone maker plans to do in 2019. At that time, the executive said that Huawei would launch a foldable smartphone, 5G-enabled phones, a smartphone with a quad-camera setup on the back with 10x lossless zoom, and AI on Kirin processor. Ji said that the company wants to innovate. “Next year we will definitely see more innovation in the camera, and now we have three, imagine four for next year. Even more zoom will come. Three or five times the zoom is not enough, ten times the zoom in consistent quality with the smartphone, this is unique! In these areas, we research, and there we could have one or the other surprise for you." Samsung foldable phone may have been revealed in companys promo video

Highlights: Promo video shows the foldable phone from Samsung There appears to be no front facing camera It sports a fingerprint scanner on the back Samsung may have just given the world the first look at its foldable smartphone. Samsung Vietnam’s YouTube page apparently uploaded and promptly removed a promo video that shows off the foldable smartphone being used in various scenes. A YouTuber managed to get a hold of the video before Samsung Vietnam could take it down and we promptly made screen grabs of the video to show you what we can expect. We have tried to enhance the screen grabs to show as much detail about the phone as possible, which has led to, in some cases, the image not having the best quality. But bear with us on that. Samsung is going to officially reveal the foldable smartphone at its Unpacked event on February 20. The top seems to be considerably slimmer than the bottom The image above first shows that the phone opens like a book and the top half is considerably slimmer than the bottom half. Samsung’s foldable phone will still be a dual-screen phone, with an outer screen and an inner, tablet-sized display. According to XDA Developers who attended the Samsung Developer Conference, the following could be the specs of the upcoming phone at the forum. Cover Display Resolution: 840×1960 Screen density: 420dpi Smallest screen width: 320dp Screen size: normal Main Display Resolution: 1536×2152 Screen density: 420dpi Smallest screen width: 585dp Screen size: large Another scenario shown in the video is of an expecting mother making an ultrasound scan all by herself using an accessory attached to the phone. The camera pans around to reveal the back of the phone. Here, we see three cameras on the back arranged horizontally, but we also see a fingerprint scanner here. The use of a fingerprint scanner would make sense, given that the front facing display of the phone appears to be rather slim, meaning that it may not have had enough space to put an under-display fingerprint sensor here. Closeup of the screen reveals a missing front-facing camera Backside of the phone seems to have 3 cameras and a fingerprint reader While the rear seems to sport three cameras, what appears to be missing is a front-facing camera. This would again make sense as Samsung could expect users to open the phone all the way, allowing the rear cameras and the cover display to be on the same plane. This would mean that the quality of selfies would become far superior to what we see today since rear cameras tend to offer better image quality than front-facing cameras. Additionally, this could also allow people to shoot images with different perspectives, given that you now have three lenses looking at you. The video is no longer posted on any Samsung official channel and is currently only being hosted as an unlisted video by an unknown individual.

In December, the company announced that it would roll out the latest Android OS to its phones in 2019, and now the device has been spotted listed on benchmarking platform Geekbench running the Android 9 Pie. The phone was launched in three variants: 4GB+64GB, 6GB+64GB and 8GB+128GB. There is a 16MP+2MP dual camera setup at the back along with a 16MP front shooter. Elon Musk urges us to use Teslas open patents to build more EVs

Highlights: Elon Musk reminds his Twitter followers that Tesla patents have been open since 2014 He attaches a link to an old Tesla blog Tesla has recently seen an increase in profits and EV production rate   Tesla CEO Elon Musk reminded his followers on Twitter yesterday that the company’s patents have for long been open to everybody and that any company stepping up to create more electric vehicles with it would only be welcome. Musk shared his reminder as a reply to his original tweet, which included the link to a CNBC article on Tesla’s recent increase in profits and EV production rate. In his reply, Elon Musk attached a link to a Tesla blog he had written back in 2014. In the blog titled All Our Patent Are Belong To You, he had written, “Tesla Motors was created to accelerate the advent of sustainable transport. If we clear a path to the creation of compelling electric vehicles, but then lay intellectual property landmines behind us to inhibit others, we are acting in a manner contrary to that goal. Tesla will not initiate patent lawsuits against anyone who, in good faith, wants to use our technology.” Just before he reminded everybody that Tesla’s patents were still open to those serving the right cause, he tweeted, “Our true competition is not the small trickle of non-Tesla electric cars being produced, but rather the enormous flood of gasoline cars pouring out of the world’s factories every day”. Since he wrote that blog in 2014, Musk has believed that any Tesla advancement in accelerating an EV revolution should be open for others to learn from and not be bottled up as a patent. “We [at Tesla] felt compelled to create patents out of concern that the big car companies would copy our technology and then use their massive manufacturing, sales and marketing power to overwhelm Tesla. We couldn’t have been more wrong. The unfortunate reality is the opposite: electric car programs (or programs for any vehicle that doesn’t burn hydrocarbons) at the major manufacturers are small to non-existent, constituting an average of far less than 1% of their total vehicle sales. We believe that Tesla, other companies making electric cars, and the world would all benefit from a common, rapidly-evolving technology platform,” Musk had written in his old blog.   Related Read: Blue Origin rocket New Shephard NS-10 to be launched on Monday   All our patent are belong to youhttps://t.co/HPK5R5UMS6 pic.twitter.com/t99riofeCI — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) 31 January 2019
