19-year old hangs himself to death after family refuses to buy him a Rs 37,000 phone to play PUBG Mobile: Report
A 19-year old boy reportedly hung himself to death after his family members refused to buy him a high-end smartphone for playing PUBG Mobile, the popular battle royale game that has caught on the fancy of millions across the world. As per a report by ANI, the 19-year old, a resident of Kurla’s Nehru Nagar area in Mumbai, demanded a smartphone worth Rs 37,000 to play the game. However, the young boy’s family didn’t give in to his demands and agreed to buy a phone not more than Rs 20,000. Mumbai Mirror reported the boy had an argument with his elder brother about the new smartphone the night before he took the extreme step. The report identified the victim as Nadeem Sheikh, who worked as a sales executive and lived with his mother, elder brother and his wife and kid. The report states that Nadeem was hooked to the game and was eyeing a particular phone to play the game better. While his elder brother agreed to give him Rs 20,000 for a smartphone, he was quite adamant about wanting the entire amount. He even reportedly returned the money his elder brother gave. Following the argument, according to the Mirror report, the Nadeem continued to play games on his phone after his family members went to sleep by 2:00 AM. Later, the elder brother got up to go to the toilet when he found Nadeem’s body hanging by a rope from the ceiling fan in the kitchen. The police have registered a case of accidental death. PUBG Mobile has certainly managed to attract a burgeoning group of players. Players, who have never played on PC or consoles and simply leapfrogged to mobile. The game itself offers strikingly similar experience, that too in a multiplayer environment, having all the ingredients to keep players hooked for hours. The game was recently adjudged the best Android game by Google Play Store, but it also found itself amidst a lot of negativity. The game has been blamed by student bodies for being a detriment to studies, while an 11-year old boy has reportedly moved the Bombay High Court to ban the game on grounds of being addictive and spreading wrong values to children.

Windows 10 users beware new OS damaged browser message is a scam
Highlights: A new internet scams is telling users their Windows system is damaged, reports the Daily Express Force close your browser if you see it. The root of the scam could be a faulty DNS. This news item concerns you if you’re a Windows user. A new scam is warning users in select regions including the US and UK that their “Windows system is damaged” when they try to open a page on their web browser, reports the Daily Express. If you see any browser page convey information about a damaged operating system, we advise you to close the page right away as it’s a scam stemming from a faulty DNS. If a browser warning pops up and blocks you from closing the tab, you can always force close the browser using Task Manager. We, at Digit, haven’t personally encountered such a scam message, but Bleeping Computer’s post on the matter tells us the message could read: “System Warning! Your Windows system is damaged. Windows Version: Windows 7 Please note: Windows security has detected that the system is corrupted and outdated. All system files will be deleted after: 0 seconds. Important: Click on the ‘Update’ button to install the latest software to scan and prevent your files from being deleted.” The message is reportedly followed by a button to “Update”. An attempt to close the tab could be met with a warning pop-up that reads: “Windows Firewall has detected that your Windows 7 is damaged and irrelevant. As a result, your system files are automatically detected. Please follow the instructions to fix the problem immediately. This way you will ensure that your system is always protected.” This message is expected to appear as is even for Windows 10 users. Again, we haven’t encountered the problem personally but if you are seeing such a message appear in your browser, you should force close the browser application immediately. You can force close your browser using Windows’ Task Manager, which can be accessed by pressing the Ctrl + Alt + Delete keys on the keyboard together and selecting Task Manager in the menu that follows. In Task Manager, select the browser application (be it Chrome, Firefox, or Edge), then click on the button captioned End Task. According to the report, a Microsoft support engineer had responded to users who complained online, “Microsoft is aware of this issue and is investigating. We’ll provide more information as it becomes available.” As a long-term solution to the problem, we advise switching to a different internet service and running a full system scan on your antivirus software. Apple files patent for glass keyboard
Highlights: Apple has filed for a new Keyboard patent. The new patent is for a touch enabled glass keyboard. Apple has filed for a new patent which showcases a touch enabled keyboard. The filed patent shows shows multi-layers on the keyboard. The top layer and the bottom which houses the trackpad is shown to have a transformable piece of glass. This could presumably change based on the applications being used, similar to what we have seen with the touch bar on the new Macs. According to digital trends the “patent drawings show that first glass layer offers the ability to become altered, potentially allowing the bottom half of the case to house a touchscreen which could then become tactile when the user has the use for a keyboard. This solution would help to alleviate the lack of precise physical feedback from the touch surface when a button is pressed.” Put simply, this new patent shows a glass keyboard with raised portions to denote the placement of keys and give users feedback when each key is pressed. This could eliminate the need for moving parts in the keyboard reducing the chances of failure. The feedback could be similar to the haptic feedback we saw with the home button on the iPhone 7. The filed patent is simply called "Computer with keyboard" but it looks to be a lot more than that. Apple has been criticised for the butterfly mechanism on its keyboard, especially because dust manages to enter the keyboard housing. With the second generation, Apple added a silicone membrane to help with the problem. Bringing forth a touch enabled keyboard with raised positions for the keys could help eliminate the problem altogether, but how well it will work practically is something only time will tell. The touchscreen of a smartphone took some getting used to and has now become second nature for those that use a smartphone. How effective will a glass keyboard be and more importantly, how durable is a question that remains to be answered. This isn't the first time that we have seen a touch enabled keyboard on a laptop. Lenovo has had the Lenovo Yoga Book with a second display that doubles up as a writing pad when wanted and a keyboard when needed. The trend didn’t take off because there is no way to get feedback from the touchpad keyboard. Hopefully, Apple’s patent for raised keys and feedback from the touch enabled keyboard will change that. Apple has been in the news for all the wrong reasons these past few weeks. A 14-year-old found a bug in group facetime that enables a user to eavesdrop on others. The Cupertino giant has been sued by a lawyer for the same. You can read more about the FaceTime bug here. Sales of the iPhone have declined in India and China due to the high price of the iPhone and competitive offerings from other brands. You can read more about the drop in sales of the iPhone here. WhatsApp authentication feature with biometric app lock option rolls out for beta testers on iOS
Highlights: WhatsApp has enabled new authentication feature on its iOS beta version 2.19.20.19. Beta testers can use Touch ID or Face ID to enter the app. The new feature is slated to roll out with the version 2.19.20. WhatsApp is reportedly implementing a new authentication feature for iOS users that it was previously rumoured to be working on. As per WABetaInfo, the company has submitted a new version 2.19.20.19 beta update, published through the TestFlight beta program, that brings the new option for beta testers, along with many other new features. The new option is stated to enable an in-app authentication function so that only a valid user can access the app. The feature could be made available for all users with the version 2.19.20 stable update on the App Store. As per the report, the new authentication option is now available for all beta testers of the app and can be enabled from the Privacy tab under the Account section of the apps’ settings. Users with iPhone X or above will get to use Face ID for verification and access to the app, while older iPhone models will use Touch ID for enabling the feature. After the option is set-up, the phone will prompt users to use Face ID or Touch ID to access the app but there will also be an option to enter a passcode in case biometric authentication fails. The report states that the biometric data or passcode set for authentication is stored locally on an iPhone and thus will not be sent to WhatsApp. “Your fingerprint (or face) data is encrypted in your phone: for this reason WhatsApp is not able to extract this information from your device (and no data is sent to their server), because the authentication process is managed by iOS,” says WABetaInfo. The new option will reportedly not be enacted when one replies to messages from notifications and this, in a sense, seems to defeat the purpose of placing authentication on the app. The feature will also not be implemented when one answers WhatsApp calls but this is understandable since calls are of higher priority. Additionally, iOS won’t even show a preview snapshot of WhatsApp over the recent apps tab when the option is enabled.
