Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K now supports Miracast: Report

It looks like Amazon’s Fire TV Stick 4K has learned a new trick. According to a report by AFTVNews, the streaming device now supports display mirroring through Miracast. The report notes that the feature has been added in version 6.2.6.3 of Fire OS. The report notes that early Fire TV devices had Miracast functionality built in, but was dropped due to lack of support. Google offers its own cast service, while Apple offers AirPlay. However, Windows, as well as some older Android devices, still offers Miracast support.

Further, it was recently reported that Netflix has pulled AirPlay support from its iOS app. With AirPlay support rolling out to third-party devices, the streaming platform apparently had difficulty in distinguishing between Apple TV and other devices to certify these experiences. However, it was noted that subscribers could continue to access Netflix on the built-in app across Apple TV and other devices.

Coming back to the Fire TV Stick 4K, Amazon notes that the device is 80% more powerful than its standard Fire TV Stick. It features a quad-core processor clocked at 1.7GHz and supports Dolby Vision and HDR 10+ along with 4K UHD playback. For added functionality, Amazon also offers the Alexa Voice remote that features dedicated power, volume and mute buttons. The remote can be bought separately or as a bundle for Rs 1,999 or Rs 5,999 respectively. The bundle consisting of the standard Fire TV Stick and the new Alexa Voice Remote is available for Rs 3,999.

Amazon has been pushing its new Alexa-powered devices in India. The company recently launched the Echo Show in India for Rs 22,999, making it the most expensive Echo-branded device in the country. The device packs a 10.5-inch HD screen and a 5MP front camera for video calls. Since it features a display, users have the option to watch content from Amazon Prime Video directly on the device.

Recommended read:

Amazon Echo Show: First impressions

Asus ROG gaming smartphones successor reportedly launching in Q3 2019

Asus announced its ROG gaming smartphone in India late last year at a price of Rs 69,999. The company was determined to impress gamers with the Snapdragon 845 chipset-powered handset that featured a slew of features supporting gaming, along with accessories. A new report by Digitimes suggests that the company is planning to launch a successor to the phone by the third quarter this year. While there are no details about what new specifications and features the handset could bring to the table, the report suggests that the company is most likely to partner with Tencent to promote it in China.

“If the cooperation with Tencent is realized, it could provide a lifeline to Asustek's embattled smartphone business, said the sources, although profits generated from gaming smartphone models are still not significant,” the report states. Asus announced a change in its strategy back in December 2018 to shift focus from entry-level and mid-range smartphones to high-end smartphones to cut back on losses. The news of the company's partnership with Tencent isn’t that surprising since the PC peripherals and gaming smartphone maker Razer also announced that it was working with Tencent on a number of initiatives related to smartphone-based games that will cover software, hardware and services.

As for the company’s first gaming smartphone, the handset features a 6-inch AMOLED HDR display with a 90hz refresh rate. It runs on an overclocked 2.96Ghz “speed-binned” Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset with a Qualcomm Adreno 630 GPU and is equipped with 8GB RAM, and 512GB of internal storage. In terms of optics, the ROG Gaming phone comes equipped with a dual 12MP + 8MP rear camera where the main sensor is paired with an f/1.8 aperture lens. The camera comes with 4-axis Optical Image Stabilisation and with dual pixel PDAF for faster autofocus. On the front is a single 8 MP camera with f/2.0 aperture. The ROG gaming smartphone is powered by a 4,000mAh battery that uses Asus HyperCharge direct-charge technology.

Related Reads:

ASUS ROG Smartphone: India's first gaming smartphone is every mobile gamer's wet dream come true

Google Maps now lets users report a slowdown on Indian roads

Google has rolled out a new feature that will let users report a ‘slowdown’ to intimate others about the slow-moving traffic situation in specific areas. The latest feature builds on the already available speed trap and accident reporting options. This feature is now available in India on Android. However, iOS users are yet to receive the functionality. When checked on Google Play Store, the last update was on March 18, which could mean that this is a server side update.

The move is seen as an addition to Google’s effort to make on-the-road commutation easy for Indians. Google has been giving information about traffic jams for a long time now by pulling the data from other drivers who are in the area but the process of data collection is a bit time-taking. With this feature, you can report a ‘slowdown’ and intimate others about it in a lot less time as the data collection process will become quicker, that too with increased accuracy.

Interestingly, Google Maps is using different names on the basis of the user's location or language settings. Reportedly, Maps users in the UK will see this option marked as “congestion” instead of “slowdown.” The feature can be accessed by pulling up the menu from the bottom of the Maps screen. Tap “Add a report” and then you can add a crash or slowdown report.

Previously, users globally got an update that enabled them to report an accident or a speed trap in the app itself if they encountered one on their journey. Even the rollout of these features was not officially announced. The speed trap feature is supposed to help commuters know if there are any speed cameras along the route with the help of a small camera icon. The feature could also be used to dodge any attempt of the regulating authorities to catch the defaulters.

Related Read:

Google Maps on Android now supports auto rickshaws for public transport users in Delhi
