YouTube reportedly rolling Picture-in-Picture mode for non-premium users outside the US

YouTube for mobile devices received the Picture-in-Picture (PiP) option in mid-2018. First available for the users of the app in the US, the option enabled Premium/Red subscribers to minimise the app but still have a small PiP floating window open to watch videos while switching apps. The availability was later made available for non-premium users and it seems like Google is finally expanding the PiP service for non-premium users outside the US. As per an Android Police report, the feature is now being made available in more countries and the option to enable PiP might pop-up for users in countries outside the US.

Google’s support page describing the feature and its availability doesn’t mention if the PiP mode is rolling out. It is still stated that non-paying users of the app in the US can benefit from PiP playback but we expect the support page to be updated soon. Users can check if the option is available for them or not by heading over to the Settings in the YouTube app, which can be accessed by tapping on your profile image on the upper-right corner. The option, if available, should show up under the General menu.

Speaking of YouTube, Google recently introduced YouTube Music and YouTube Music Premium services in India. The online music streaming service entered the country with a competitor, Spotify. Since the two have stepped into the online music streaming service space in India, the competition is heating up. JioSaavn and Gaana recently discounted their yearly subscription prices by almost 70 percent and Apple Music also announced a price cut on its service. Apple Music student and family subscription plans are now priced at Rs 49 and Rs 149 respectively, down from Rs 60 and Rs 190. Subscribing to the service on a yearly basis now costs Rs 999, instead of Rs 1,200.

Spotify’s monthly subscription is priced at Rs 119, while YouTube Music’s monthly cost of subscription is even lower at Rs 99. As for JioSaavn and Gaana users, they can now avail yearly subscription for Rs 299. Before the price cut, JioSaavn’s annual subscription was priced at Rs 999, while the same for Gaana cost Rs 1,098.

Related Reads:

Apple Music rivals YouTube Music and Spotify by lowering monthly subscription to Rs 99

YouTube Music In India: Ten steps to mastering the new music streaming app from Google

Spotify India Free vs Premium: Comparing the two tiers

BSNL launches IPL plans starting at Rs 199

With an aim to equal its private counterparts and to be in the fray, state-owned telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has introduced two special plans. The two Special Tariff Vouchers (STV) are worth Rs 199 (Rs 201 for North) and Rs 499. The company is promoting its plans during the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 tournament in India, and is now giving an option to users to set the latest cricket score as their Caller Tune.

BSNL announced the development on its official Twitter handle. Both the Rs 199 and Rs 499 plan include unlimited voice calling for both local and STD calls in the local service area. For circles like Mumbai and Delhi, the unlimited voice calling is also valid on roaming. This is because BSNL does not have operations in these cities. This STV offers 1GB of daily data and up to 100 SMS messages. If you recharge with Rs 199, you will get 28 days validity, and if you recharge with 499, the plan will be valid for 90 days.

Greet your Callers with the latest #CricketScore during the ongoing #T20Match hours & also get Unlimited Premium Caller Tunes after match time. The company says that it has 38,000 operational Wi-Fi hotspots in the country. The company has announced a total of four vouchers. With the Rs 19 voucher, one will get to avail 2GB data with two-day validity. Then, there are Rs 39 and Rs 59 vouchers, which enable usage of 7GB and 15GB data for seven and 15 days respectively. The BSNL WiFi 69 voucher is priced at Rs 69 and comes with 30GB of data, which is valid for a month.

Further, the operator also introduced a Rs 599 prepaid plan that offers a validity extension as well as free calling. The subscribers of any prepaid plan of BSNL can recharge with Rs 599 to extend the plan of their validity by 180 days. Digit confirmed the development with a source. Not only do the consumers get the extended validity of six months, but they will also get free local, STD and roaming calls. However, these plans will not be available to customers in Mumbai and Delhi circle because BSNL does not have operations in these cities.

Related Read:

BSNL is offering free trial of its broadband service with 8Mbps speed and 5GB data

Honor 20 Pro may launch with Sonys IMX600 camera sensor, Kirin 980 SoC

Honor is yet to announce any new devices this year. However, that might change soon. There have been rumours of two new Honor smartphones that could soon be announced, the Honor 10i and the Honor 20. The 'Pro' version of the latter has appeared in a new leak, which suggests that it could come equipped with Sony’s 40MP IMX600 camera sensor. It also adds that it might be launched by April 25.

It should be noted that the Sony IMX600 sensor is the same one used by the Huawei P30 Pro. The main camera on the phone will reportedly be paired with a 20 MP ultra-wide-angle camera and an 8 MP telephoto lens that supports 3x optical zoom. There is also a possibility that the handset might feature a 48MP main camera sensor, which would most likely be supplied by Sony. On the front, it is said to feature a 32MP unit. The Honor 20 may feature a 3650mAh battery with support for 22.5W fast charging.

The phone may feature a 6.1-inch OLED panel with an under-display fingerprint scanner. It is also tipped to be powered by a Kirin 980 SoC. The handset might come in three configurations consisting of 6GB RAM/128GB storage, 8GB RAM/128GB storage and 8GB RAM/256GB storage. Prices for Honor 20 Pro are said to start at CNY2,299 (Rs 23,834 approx). The phone is also touted to feature the company’s complete suite of apps like Game Booster and the Link Turbo technology.

As mentioned earlier, the company is also rumoured to be working on the Honor 10i. The smartphone was recently spotted on TENAA and the listing suggest that the company may launch two models of the phone, namely HRY-TL00T and HRY-AL00Ta. The difference between the two could be in the amount of RAM they offer. The HRY-TL00T is listed with 4GB RAM with 128GB storage, while the HRY-AL00Ta has more memory as well as storage options, including 4GB and 6GB RAM and 64GB and 128GB local storage.

Related Reads:

Honor 20 leaked spec sheet hints at triple-camera setup, variants and their prices

Honor 10i with 6GB RAM appears on TENAA

Xiaomis Mi browser, Mint Browser reportedly affected with serious URL spoofing vulnerability

Noting the lack of basic security features like XSS auditors, a researcher has found a URL spoofing vulnerability on Xiaomi-made Mi Browser and the Mint Browser. The vulnerability, identified as CVE-2019-10875, originates due to a flaw in both the browsers and it reportedly enables a malicious website to control URLs in the address bar. The Mi Browser comes pre-installed in every Xiaomi device with MIUI and Mint Browser was launched globally via the Google Play Store.

The researcher who discovered the flaw, Arif Khan, says that the Mi Security team (MiSRC) confirmed that the issue was present in their global versions and not in their domestic ones. Thus, “they inadvertently conveyed the fact that only International versions of their browsers were insecure to this vulnerability,” Khan said. He adds that the bug was accidentally spotted and it didn’t require much effort. He found the vulnerability while he decided to test “a certain feature in their browser.”

The researcher apparently noticed the flaw when triying to open a Google query search link through the Mi Browser. “For a link such as http://bit.ly/2D2agly, the URL bar would display www.domain.com, and this is exactly where the problem arises, because the URL bar doesn't display the full URL, and this not only happens in case of popular search engine websites but also with other websites,” Khan said.

Those who are using the Mi Browser or the Mint Browser as their default web browser, their device is vulnerable to phishing attacks. Khan adds that it is recommended not to use any of the browsers until the flaw is patched and instead use Google Chrome “because it has a good XSS filter.” As per the researcher, Mi Security team has acknowledged the security issue found by him and he has been awarded $198 ($99 for each browser) bounty rewards. However, it is not yet known whether the vulnerability is patched or not.

Related Read:

Global smartphone shipments expected to drop for third consecutive year in 2019: IDC
