Wear OS by Google gets swipeable Tiles, roll out next month

Google has announced that it is debuting Tiles that will give users more swipeable access to get things done quickly right from the wrist. Tiles build on the already available swipeable actions and these are basically widgets that are aimed to provide quick information about the upcoming events to users. Google has launched six new Tiles which can be accessed by just swiping left on the homescreen of a smartwatch.

“Whether you’re at home or on the go, your time is valuable. Five years ago, we built Wear OS by Google to help you get information and get things done quickly, at a glance. Over the past few months, we’ve introduced a new design that provides swipeable access to health coaching from Google Fit and proactive help from the Google Assistant. Now, we’re debuting new Tiles that give you more swipeable access to the things you need to know and get done right from your wrist,” the company said in a blogpost.

As mentioned Google has launched six Tiles: Goals, Next event, Forecast (weather), Heart rate, Headlines and Timer. With a swipe left, users can check their progress towards their fitness goals or start a workout. The tiles will also provide reminders, keep the users updated with forecast so that they can plan their daily trips, check heart rate and follow the latest news headlines.

These ‘Tiles’ are customisable so if you have a habit of checking news, you can place the Headlines Tile first. “To arrange the Tiles in the order you wish to see them, touch and hold any Tile on your smartwatch, or touch and drag one in your Wear OS by Google app. You’ll be able to stay connected to what’s important to you, and still keep tabs on other information and actions,” Google added.

The company says that it will add more Tiles over time. These new Tiles will be rolling out to the Wear OS-powered smartwatch over the next month. Google also notes that certain features may vary by phone OS, watch or country.

Asus Zenfone 6 launch confirmed for May 16

Asus has confirmed that it is launching the Zenfone 6 on May 16. The development confirms the previously available information about the launch date of the phone, however, there are still doubts on the venue of the event. During MWC, tech news platform Lowyat spotted an ad in a magazine which showed that the phone will launch in Valencia, Spain. The company has hinted that the unveiling could happen in Europe because it has given the launch time in Central European Summer Time (CEST).

Asus has shared an image on its official Instagram account showing a silhouette of a phone with no notch. This could mean that Asus may also jump on the pop-up selfie camera bandwagon. If true, the Zenfone 6 will be the first offering from the Taiwanese tech giant sporting this design. Further, the image also shows an earpiece suggesting that the phone will not use the display for sound - a technology that several OEMs are using to get a near edge-to-edge display design.

The Zenfone 6 will be successor to last year’s flagship Zenfone 5Z that was launched last year, so it is possible that it will come with Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor. The Zenfone 5Z was launched with a 6GB RAM and 64GB storage base model, and went up to 8GB RAM/ 256GB storage variant. As mentioned earlier, it is powered by the Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 mobile platform. The Asus Zenfone 5Z sports a 6.2-inch full-HD+ LCD screen with a 19:9 display aspect ratio.

In terms of optics, the smartphone is equipped with a 12MP + 8MP dual-rear cameras with a f/1.8 and a f/2.2 aperture lens respectively. On the front, it sports an 8MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture lens and 84-degree field of view. Both the front and rear cameras support EIS as well. It is backed by a 3300mAh battery that supports Qualcomm’s QuickCharge 3.0 for faster charging.

Moto Z4 leaks in entirety, to come with waterdrop notch

Motorola’s Moto Z4 has been leaked a few times in the past and now, another image of the phone has surfaced showing it from multiple angles. The image has been shared by famous tipster Evan Blass and it confirms what we already know so far. We can see the waterdrop notch on the edge-to-edge display that has a small chin. On the back is a protruding camera module with a single lens, Motorola’s signature bat-wing logo and pogo pins.

On the right edge, the phone has a volume rocker and a power button. At the bottom, there is a USB-C port, a 3.5 mm headphone jack, and a microphone. On the top edge, the Z4 has the secondary mic and a SIM card slot along with a speaker. There is no visible fingerprint scanner, so it is assumed that the phone will have an in-display sensor or it could be embedded in the batwing logo.

Previous reports have suggested that the Moto Z4 will have an in-display fingerprint sensor. The Moto Z4 Play is said to have a 48MP camera sensor, however, there is no information on the supplier. Currently, Sony and Samsung are the primary manufacturers to supply a 48MP sensor. On the front, the phone could have a 25MP selfie snapper. The phone is expected to sport a 6.4-inch OLED display. There are pogo pins on the back, and reportedly, the smartphone will also support the 5G Moto Mod.

Under the hood, the phone is expected to feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 mobile platform that has been manufactured via a 11nm process. The SoC is said to be accompanied by 4GB and 6GB RAM, and 64GB and 128GB storage options. Like other Motorola phones, the company is expected to stick with the stock Android version, and the Moto Z4 Play is expected to run Android 9 Pie out-of-the-box. The phone is said to pack a 3600mAh battery with TurboCharge support.

Epic buys Rocket League developer Psyonix

Epic Games, the developer behind the popular battle Royale game, Fortnite, has announced that it is acquiring Rocket League developer, Psyoonix. Terms of the deal, including how much Epic paid for the developer, were not disclosed. If you are wondering what this means for the popular car-based soccer game, the developer said on its official blog, “In the short term, nothing will change at all! We’re still committed to providing Rocket League with frequent updates that have new features, new content, and new ways to play the game for as long as you’ll have us. In the long-term, we expect to bring Rocket League to the Epic Games store and to leverage our new relationship to grow the game in ways we couldn’t do on our own before. We believe that bringing Rocket League to new audiences with more support is a win for everybody.”

In the original statement, Epic said, “The PC version of Rocket League will come to the Epic Games store in late 2019. In the meantime, it will continue to be available for purchase on Steam; thereafter it will continue to be supported on Steam for all existing purchasers.” The statement sounded like the game would be pulled off the Steam Store. However, Epic clarified in a statement saying, "We are continuing to sell Rocket League on Steam, and have not announced plans to stop selling the game there...Rocket League remains available for new purchasers on Steam, and long-term plans will be announced in the future."

So it looks like the game will continue to sell on Steam along with the Epic store but we do think there will some Epic store exclusive goodies in store for the game in the future. The deal between Epic and Psyonix is yet to be finalized and both the parties are expected to seal the deal by June 2019.

While Sony and Microsoft are adding to their portfolio of first-party developers to build an exciting library of exclusive, it looks like we may see a similar exclusive lineup war in the PC space helmed by Steam and Epic. Time for Steam to whip out the big guns in the form of Half-Life 3?
