Nokia 62, Nokia 52 could launch in India today, Nokia 9 PureView also expected

Nokia has been teasing the launch of a new smartphone in India since some time now. The launch event is slated to commence today at 11:30 AM and the company might be gearing up to announce the Nokia 5.2, Nokia 6.2 and/or the Nokia 9 PureView smartphones. While it isn't confirmed that the smartphone maker will announce three new phones, it is surely a possibility since a launch event is happening today in Italy as well. Additionally, going by the teasers Nokia India is posting on its Twitter page, it is more likely that the Nokia 5.2 or the Nokia 6.2 will be announced in the country.

Nokia 6.2 rumoured specifications

HMD Global may announce a global variant of its Nokia X71 smartphone that was announced in Taiwan a couple of months ago. The handset could be called the Nokia 6.2 and is expected to feature the same specs as the Nokia X71. The smartphone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 chipset and comes with 6GB RAM. It is expected to launch running on Android 9 Pie and thanks to Google's Android One programme, it should receive regular software updates for up to two years after launch. The phone was recently spotted on Geekbench where it scored 1455 on the Single-Core test and 5075 on the Multi-Core test. In comparison, the recently launched Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 powered by the same chipset scores 1642 and 5796 on the same two tests respectively.

The Nokia X71 features a 6.39-inch Full HD+ PureDisplay that has punch-hole design. The front camera is placed at the top-left edge of the display. USP of the Nokia 6.2 is expected to be its triple-rear camera setup. The handset is said to come equipped with a 48MP sensor made either by Sony or Samsung. The other two should take on wide-angle photography and depth sensing tasks. The device could feature 128GB of internal storage that can be expanded up to 256GB using a microSD card. The battery on it is said to be a 3,500mAh unit with an 18W fast-charging setup.

Nokia 9 PureView specifications

The Nokia 9 PureView comes equipped with a 5.99-inch display with an aspect ratio of 18:9. It sports a P-OLED display that supports HDR10 with 2K resolution and is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5. It comes equipped with an under-display fingerprint sensor as well. Under the hood, the smartphone runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, which is coupled with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. The phone runs on Android 9 Pie and is backed by a 3320mAh battery that supports Quick Charge 3 and USB Power Delivery, along with 10W wireless charging. The phone does not have a 3.5mm jack. The handset is rated IP67 for water and dust resistance.

In terms of optics, the Nokia 9 Pureview sports five 12MP cameras on the back. Three of the five cameras feature monochrome sensors while the other two are RGB sensors. There’s an additional ToF depth sensor and a dual-tone LED flash in the module. All five sensors sport fixed focal length of 28mm and the smartphone clicks an image from all five cameras simultaneously. Nokia claims that the cameras deliver a 12.4-stops of dynamic range for a more detailed image. On the front, the Nokia 9 Pureview gets a 20MP camera with f/1.8 aperture lens, which supports 4-in-1 pixel binning.

Asus restricted from selling, advertising Zen, ZenFone branded smartphones, accessories in India

Update: According to an Asus Spokesperson, the upcoming launch of the ZenFone 6 in India will not be affected by the ongoing infringement case and will remain on track. Asus will further share a statement regarding the developements.

Original Story: Asus was all set to launch the ZenFone 6 in India, but looks like the company might have to delay the launch of the smartphone, or rename it entirely. The Taiwanese tech company has lost a trademark infringement case to Telecare Network India Pvt Ltd, which claimed that it is the registered owner of the ‘Zen’ and ‘ZenMobile’ trademarks in India. The interim order to stop Asus from selling ZenFone or Zen branded smartphones, accessories and other merchandise was given by the Delhi High Court.

The court noted that the trademarks were first used by Telecare Network India Pvt Ltd in 2008, whereas Asus started using the identical trademarks in 2014. Asus argued that there was no scope of confusing ZenFone branding with ZenMobile, as the former is a popular and known Asus offering. The company also argued that the word ‘Zen’ was a pretty common trade name and is generic in nature. To prove this, Asus presented a search report from the Trade Marks Registry’s website, showing multiple parties with the ‘Zen’ name registered.

However, the court did not side with Asus and said, “though ZEN is a generic word qua a school of Buddhism, yet it is not a generic mark with regard to mobile phones and tablets as the said word has no connection or correlation with mobile phones or tablets.”

Asus has since been restricted to sell or advertise , directly or indirectly, any products like mobile phones, phone accessories, or related merchandise with the ZenFone or Zen branding. The court-ordered restriction on Asus commences July 23. The next hearing on the matter is set for July 10. If Asus is unable to get a favourable judgement from the court in the next hearing, it may have to end up rebranding its entire ZenFone line-up in India.

Digit has reached out to Asus for a statement.

Xiaomi Mi 9T launch set for June 12, teased to sport pop-up selfie shooter

Xiaomi announced that it would launch a new Mi-Series smartphone called Mi 9T on June 12. The Chinese tech giant, however, didn't mention the place of the event, so we don’t know whether the launch is in India, China or Europe. There is a possibility that this is a soft launch. There is no official information on the features and specifications of the phone, but we can still speculate them on the basis of the image that the company posted on Twitter.

According to the image, the phone will not have any type of notch, which means that it will come with a pop-up selfie camera mechanism. That theory is further strengthened by a hashtag that Xiaomi has used in the tweet (see below). In the image, we can also see a triple camera setup and an LED flash. There is no visible fingerprint sensor, which suggests that the Mi 9T will have an in-display fingerprint sensor.

Previously, a Dubai-based YouTuber had claimed that Redmi K20 is re-branded as Mi 9T in markets outside China. The Youtuber also posted three images of the phone showing the front part where the screen doesn’t have a notch. The Mi 9T will reportedly come in a Carbon Black colour with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage.

The image shared by the Dubai-based blogger shows a screen guard of the device that has the specs written down on it. It says that the phone has a 6.39-inch AMOLED display, in-display fingerprint sensor, 20MP pop-up front camera, and a 4,000mAh battery with 18W fast charging support. The chipset is likely going to be the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730.

Google Maps now shows live train running status, bus travel times and mixed-mode commute options in India

Google has been actively updating and adding new features for Google Maps in India. It recently added a feature that enables users to report a ‘slowdown’ on Indian roads. The company has now announced three new features for Google Maps users in India, which are aimed at commuters and people who use public transportation as their main mode of transportation. Google Maps will now show live train status for Indian Railways trains, along with bus travel times from live traffic in 10 of the largest Indian cities. Users will also see mixed-mode commuting suggestions, which combines auto-rickshaw and public transport.

The real-time train information for long-distance trains will enable users to see at what time a train is arriving. The feature will also display live train status for Indian Railways trains and has been developed in partnership with the Where is My Train app, which was acquired by Google last year. One can use this option by booting up Google Maps, and searching and selecting their starting station and destination station. Users will see a list of trains that are available between the selected route and here, real-time status of trains will be shown, along with additional information like delays.

Google Maps is also being updated with an option to display bus travel times based on current live traffic conditions. The feature is apparently made possible by leveraging Google’s live traffic data and public bus schedules to “calculate delays and provide accurate travel times.” As mentioned above, this new option will be available for 10 Indian cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, Lucknow, Chennai, Mysore, Coimbatore, and Surat. Google states in its blog post, “This is the first product of its kind -- launching first in India -- enabling you to know how long your bus trip will take when factoring in live traffic conditions,” One can look up live bus travel times by tapping on the transit tab after entering their starting location and destination.

The public transport option on Google Maps for Android will now notify users of directions in mixed mode for journeys that combine auto-rickshaw rides and public transport. It will show options like commute times, which station to take an auto-rickshaw to/from, estimated rickshaw meter fare and departure times for your transit connection. This new feature is initially rolling out for commuters in Delhi and Bangalore and is slated to be made available soon in more cities.
