Airtel, Vodafone take on Jio with refreshed prepaid plans that offer more daily data

The telecom wars are now heating up with Airtel and Vodafone revamping their respective prepaid options to offer more data. Airtel has refreshed its long term prepaid recharge priced at Rs 1,699 to offer 1.4GB data per day, instead of 1GB. The plan still comes with a 365-day validity and offers unlimited calling, along with 100 SMS messages per day and some additional benefits. This comes soon after Vodafone revamped its Rs 129 prepaid plan to credit 2GB of data per day for 28 days. This short-term recharge takes on Airtel’s previously announced Rs 129 pack that also offers 2GB daily data for a month.

The refreshed Rs 1,699 prepaid plan by Airtel takes on Vodafone’s offering that is priced the same. However, Vodafone offers 1GB data per day with its recharge, which is valid for 365 days. Additionally, the Airtel recharge also offers a free subscription to Airtel TV's Premium services, like free access to ZEE5, HOOQ, Norton, along with Wynk Music and cashback of up to Rs 2,000 when buying a new 4G phone. Coming to Vodafone’s Rs 129 prepaid plan, the refreshed prepaid option now comes with 2GB data, up from the previous 1.5GB data. It also offers unlimited calling, along with 100 SMS messages per day.

Now that Airtel is nearing Jio in terms of data volume, it remains to be seen what the latter telecom operator does. Jio has a long-term prepaid plan priced at Rs 1,699, which has a 365-day validity and offers 1.5GB daily data with unlimited calling, 100 SMS messages and complimentary subscription to Jio’s suite of apps. Additionally, the Rs 129 recharge by Vodafone now goes up against Jio’s Rs 149 prepaid plan that credits 1.5GB daily data, offers unlimited calling and 100 SMS messages per day with a 28-day validity.

Lenovo Z6 spec roundup: Phone to be launched with 639-inch display, Snapdragon 730 chipset

Lenovo Z6 will be launched at 11:30 am local time (9:00 am India time) on July 4 in China, and two days ahead of the event, Lenovo Group Vice President Chang Cheng has shared an image unveiling the design and almost all the key specifications of the phone. He is responsible for intermittent release of the details about the upcoming Lenovo Z6 smartphone. Below is the round-up of all the specifications that are known so far.

Design and Display

The Lenovo looks a lot like the Z6 Youth Edition and sports a near edge-to-edge display. The display has a waterdrop notch and a chin. The phone features an in-display fingerprint sensor, which is claimed to unlock the device in 0.13 seconds. The phone sports a 6.39-inch OLED display with HDR10 support and a 120Hz refresh rate. Lenovo claims that the phone has 93.1-percent screen-to-body ratio. On the back, it has a vertically aligned triple camera setup placed on the top left corner. The image shows a blue coloured back panel with a gradient pattern. The Z6 is said to have nano-coating for durability and the back panel of the phone is claimed to have 10 layers of NCVM vacuum nano-coating that gives it a 3D effect.

Lenovo Z6 Specifications

Processor and Software

It has already been confirmed that the phone is a mid-range device with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 chipset under the hood. The CPU is said to be clocked at 2.2GHz and is touted to deliver 35 percent improved performance over its predecessor. The device will be offered with up to 8GB LPDDR4 RAM and up to 128GB UFS 2.1 storage. The phone will run ZUI 11 custom OS based on Android 9.0. To ‘enhance’ the gaming performance, the phone will come equipped with Game Turbo technology.

Camera and Battery

When it comes to camera, the Lenovo Z6 will sport a triple camera setup. The primary camera will have a 24MP Sony IMX576 sensor with an f/1.8 aperture lens. It is combined with an 8MP telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom and 8x hybrid zoom support. The third is a 5MP depth sensor, while on the front, the phone is equipped with a 16MP sensor. Further, Cheng claims that the Lenovo Z4 will be the lightest phone (159 grams) with a 4000mAh battery in the industry. The battery will have 15W Quick Charge 3.0 support. Lenovo says that it has used the rollcage design of the ThinkPad laptops to shed the Lenovo Z6’s weight. The company claims that the Lenovo Z6 has a durable and drop-proof 6000-series aluminum frame.

Google debuts Fuchsia OS developer portal

Up until the Google I/O 2019 we knew next to nothing about the Fuchsia OS. First appearing on GitHub three years ago, theories sprang about Google developing a replacement for Android or Chrome OS. While this is far from the truth, reading the code of Fuchsia hinted at an OS that could run on multiple platforms. The same was later confirmed by Hiroshi Lockheimer, Senior Vice President of Android and Chrome, at Google I/O 2019. Now, Google has quietly launched the official Fuchsia OS website for the developers.

Fuchsia.dev was also made live after the Google I/O 2019 but no content was available on the website at that time. In contrast, the newly launched website isn’t the most visually appealing ones either but it contains a lot of documentation that is aimed at helping the developers to get started with the OS. However, it is nearly impossible for the developers to start creating Fuchsia apps currently, mainly because very few devices support the OS right now. The brief list includes Acer Switch Alpha 12, Google Pixelbook, and select generations of Intel NUC.

It is important to note that Fuchsia is not being developed to push Android or Chrome OS to the side (any time soon). Here’s a statement from Hiroshi Lockheimer to clear the air:

“We’re looking at what a new take on an operating system could be like. And so I know out there people are getting pretty excited saying, ‘Oh this is the new Android,’ or, ‘This is the new Chrome OS … Fuchsia is really not about that. Fuchsia is about just pushing the state of the art in terms of operating systems and things that we learn from Fuchsia we can incorporate into other products.”

Fuchsia OS is drastically different from any other operating system that is available right now as it has its own Kernel. It doesn’t run on Linux, instead, it runs on the all-new Zircon microkernel. The OS is really scalable suitable to be used on a range of devices including notebooks, smartphones, tablets, as well as embedded systems.

Developers will need to use Flutter to actually write the user interface and apps. The main advantage of Flutter is its cross-platform framework. What it means is that developers will be able to build apps for both iOS and Android using a single codebase. Moreover, Flutter can attain a smooth user interface at 120 fps.

While Fuchsia is still in its early phase of development, the site may indicate Google’s emphasis on the OS for future.
