Redmi 7A to get Snapdragon 730 in India, Xiaomi VP Manu Kumar Jain confirms ahead of July 4 launch

Xiaomi is all set to launch the Redmi 7A smartphone in India on July 4. However, the company’s Global VP and India MD, Manu Kumar Jain, has now confirmed a key spec of the phone ahead of its official reveal. On July 1, the company executive posted an image on Twitter asking users to guess the processor on the Redmi 7A. One of his followers on the platform guessed that the chip could be the Snapdragon 625 and in a reply, Jain has confirmed that while it won’t be the Snapdragon 625, the Redmi 7A will be announced on the relatively newer Snapdragon 730 SoC. This will make the Redmi 7A the first phone to feature the Snapdragon 730 Octa-core chipset in India.

The Snapdragon 730 processor was announced alongside the Snapdragon 730G on April 9, 2019. It is built on the 8nm fabrication process. It features a Kryo 470 Octa-core CPU paired with an Adreno 618 GPU. The chipset comes with a triple camera setup support and can handle a single 48MP sensor. It gets a fourth gen Qualcomm AI engine, Apt-X adaptive codec, Wi-Fi 6 support, and 4K video recording at 60fps.

The Redmi A series of handsets are usually less powerful, entry-level handsets that are aimed at people who are transitioning from feature phones to smartphones. While the choice of processor by the company is surely unusual, it is not entirely surprising since it had previously teased that a new phone running on Snapdragon 730 or 730G will be launched in India soon. However, it remains to be seen how the choice of processor affects the phone’s pricing since the Redmi 5A runs on the Snapdragon 425 SoC and is priced starting at Rs 5,999.

ROFL  Yes, we would have loved to launch it with my fav SD 625!  Unfortunately our truck got stolen  Oh wait.. There's a new 625 in the market: SD 710!  Fortunately, this time we are smarter by upgrading to latest SD 730, which is 40% faster than 1 year old SD 710  https://t.co/wR8wNHMUft

The Redmi 7A is turning out to be an interesting device and we will surely find out more about it tomorrow when it is officially announced. The handset has already been announced in China running on the Snapdragon 439 SoC. In India, it will be made available via Flipkart. The Redmi 7A features a 5.45-inch HD display with an 18:9 aspect ratio and a 1440x720 pixel resolution. It is expected to run on Android 9 Pie with MIUI 10 on top and come equipped with a 4000mAh battery that supports 10W charging.

Microsoft walks down memory lane, introduces Windows 10

In what appears to be a highly strategic and thematic marketing move, Microsoft went back in time on its Twitter and Instagram profiles for Windows by creating video and picture posts about an all-new Windows 1.0 operating system. According to a video tweet it shared on Monday morning, the company is “introducing” the very operating system that it originally launched on November 20, 1985. Microsoft followed the tweet up with another that contained images of old Microsoft products and a small quiz.

“Introducing the all-new Windows 1.0, with MS-Dos Executive, Clock, and more!!” wrote Microsoft in its first tweet of the series on Monday. “With Excel, Chart, and even Flight Simulator, there’s no telling where Microsoft and the power of Windows will take you this summer,” added Microsoft in a new tweet a day later. A little later still the company asked its followers a question on Twitter, “Running Windows 1.0 in 1985 required at least how much memory?”. Find the correct answer at the end of this news story.

One of the images tweeted by Microsoft for Windows

In the short video clip, we see the iconic Windows logo travel back in time all the way from the current Windows 10 design back to the original Windows 1.0 design. Seen along the way are the logos the company used in Windows Vista/7, Windows XP, Windows 2000/NT, and Windows 98/95. Seen also is a black and white Windows logo Microsoft briefly used during the late 1980s for Windows 3.0. On Instagram, Microsoft went to the trouble of deleting all its older posts to make space for the two Windows 1.0 posts.

It’s hard to say at the moment what Microsoft is playing at with its Windows 1.0-themed posts on Twitter and Instagram. It’s highly unlikely that the posts have anything to do with a new Windows operating system, especially one that’s installed using a couple of floppy disk drives. If our guess is as good as yours, Microsoft could be launching a new Windows 10 app on the Microsoft Store that pays tribute to the original operating system. Some reports online suggest that Microsoft is creating nostalgic posts around its first Windows version as part of a promotional campaign for Stranger Things, a Netflix Original science fiction horror web TV show. We’ll soon find out then.

The answer to the question, “Running Windows 1.0 in 1985 required at least how much memory?”, is 256KB.

Apple to launch an iPhone with in-display fingerprint scanner exclusively in China

Apple ditched the home button from its iPhones on the 10th anniversary of the iconic product line-up. Alongside the home button, the company also dumped Touch ID in favour of Face ID. The latest development was painted as the future of biometric authentication, which is present in all iPhone X and up devices.

Now, fresh reports indicate that Apple might be looking to bring back Touch ID on iPhones. However, there’s a catch. The new Touch ID could be built into the display of the upcoming “budget” iPhone and this model could be exclusive to China.

According to the Chinese outlet, The Global Times, Apple is preparing to launch an affordable flagship with an in-display fingerprint scanner in China. Moreover, as the in-display fingerprint scanner can only be built into an OLED display, the budget iPhone will now also feature an OLED panel instead of an LCD panel as found on the iPhone XR.

Additionally, Apple is allegedly looking to ditch Face ID for this in-display fingerprint scanner. There were reports in 2017 that future iPhones might support the in-display biometric tech but the idea was ultimately shelved in favour Face ID.

The report goes on to say, “The new phone will reportedly remove Face ID, the facial recognition system for the iPhone, and instead employ an under-display fingerprint function, news site caijing.com.cn reported, citing sources on the upstream industry supply chain. An industry insider revealed that this is likely to "save on costs."

Apple is taking steps to cut costs on the affordable iPhone. A major component of Face ID, a structured light sensor, reportedly costs several hundred yuan, removing which could result in a price drop for the upcoming iPhone.According to the report, Apple is taking the required steps to regain Chinese users it has lost in the recent past to the likes of Huawei, Vivo and Oppo. It now holds nine percent of the Chinese smartphone market in contrast to 34 percent, 19 percent, and an 18 percent market share held by Huawei, Vivo, and Oppo, respectively.

It would be interesting to see if Apple rolls out the new “budget” flagship to other countries as well. We are expecting it to launch in India sometime after the China roll-out.

Realme X coming to India on July 15 alongside Realme X Spider-Man Far From Home special edition

Realme is all set to launch the Realme X in India on July 15. Realme's CEO, Madhav Sheth has now confirmed on Twitter that the company will also launch a Spider-Man Far From Home special edition of the Realme X on the same day. The smartphone was first unveiled in China on May 15. For those wondering about the price, Realme Indian CEO, Madhav Sheth said that the device will be priced between Rs 18,000 to Rs 20,000. This price tag is slightly higher than what the phone costs in China, which is about Rs 15,000.

Coming to the specifications of the Realme X, the smartphone sports a 6.53-inch AMOLED Samsung display, with Gorilla Glass 5 protection. The smartphone has a 91.2-per cent screen-to-body ratio. This is achieved because the device has a pop-up selfie camera. The smartphone also sports a sixth-generation optical in-display fingerprint sensor. It launched in China in two colours - white and blue. There were two special colours announced in China as well inspired by onion and garlic. You can read more about the special colours here.

Under the hood, the Realme X is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 processor, along with a copper-pipe cooling which the company claims reduces the temperature by 15.2 per cent while gaming. In China, the smartphone is available in three variants - 4GB RAM + 64GB storage, 6GB RAM and 64GB storage and 8GB RAM + 128GB storage variant. The special edition variants come with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage. A 3765mAh battery powers the entire package with VOOC 3.0 support.

Speaking of the optics, the Realme X has a 48MP rear camera with a Sony IMX 586 sensor along with a 6P lens with an aperture of f/1.7. There is also a 5MP secondary sensor accompanied by an LED flash. Realme claims that the phone can shoot 960fps slo-mo videos. For the popup selfie camera, we get a 16MP shooter with a Sony IMX471 sensor with an f/2.0 aperture.

As mentioned above, there will be a Realme X Spider-Man Far From Home special edition which will come with a special retail packaging and exclusive cover for the phone. The theme will bring with it icons and wallpapers on the smartphone.

Movie tie-in special editions of smartphones aren't a new concept and are something we can expect every time a big-budget pop culture movie is releasing. We saw OnePlus release Star Wars Special edition for the OnePlus 5T, an Avengers edition for the OnePlus 6 and we also saw an Avengers: End Game edition for the Oppo F11 Pro.

I am really excited to announce our collaboration with #SpiderManFarFromHome for realme X. See you at the premiere. pic.twitter.com/sTBJhXMAN0
