Xiaomi Mi TV Early Access Program announced for Mi TV 4A series

Riding the success of its televisions in India, the Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has announced an Early Access Program for its Xiaomi Mi TV 4A series of televisions. Xiaomi will choose 50 active Mi fans and give them early access to the Android 9 Pie firmware update. These users will be selected on July 20 at 11:59:59 Hrs (IST), and their names will be announced on the Mi Community blog, soon after.

To take part in the programme, participants must meet some minimum requirements. To apply for the programme, a fan should have a Xiaomi Mi TV 4A 32-inch or 43-inch variant, and those interested can apply by clicking this link. “Yes, we have builds ROMs on Android 9 Pie builds, which is the latest build available for Smart TVs. As a matter of fact, we will be the first TV brand in the country to roll out Android 9 update for our Mi TVs. When other brands are releasing new TVs based on Android 8.0, we have already started testing Android 9 Pie,” the company announced on its forum.

Mi TV Early Access Program

Xiaomi has also listed some of the problems that might arise during the process. Testers could soft brick their TV while flashing the ROM. Xiaomi says that updating the ROM, especially from Android 6 images, involves various stages. If the electricity goes off during this process, the TV will get soft bricked. This will require a service engineer to physically get to the Mi TV and flash using laptop + USB male-male cables. Xiaomi has also clarified that Google’s AI-powered virtual assistant Google Assistant won't work directly on these Mi TVs, as these TVs don’t support Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE).

Samsung Galaxy A90 5G spotted on Geekbench with Snapdragon 855 SoC, 6GB RAM

Samsung Galaxy A90 5G has surfaced on Geekbench, reaffirming rumours of the device being powered by the Snapdragon 855 chipset. The phone sports a model number SM-A908N, which suggests flagship level specs like Snapdragon 855 SoC, 6GB RAM, and Android Pie. However, Samsung has never used flagship processor on a mid-range device before, but with the availability of 5G connectivity on flagship chips only, like the Exynos 9820 and Snapdragon 855, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Galaxy A90 5G comes with a flagship SoC under the hood.

Moreover, what’s slightly odd is the inclusion of 6GB RAM, since the Galaxy A80 was recently released with 8GB RAM. However, there is a possibility that the Galaxy A90 5G might come in two variants: one with 6GB RAM and the other with 8GB RAM. However, the presence of 5G could make it an expensive device, and as SamMobile claims, “offering options for storage and RAM would allow Samsung to keep the retail prices a bit more palatable.”

Other rumoured specifications of the handset include a 4,500 mAh battery, a 6.7 inch FHD+ Infinity-U Super AMOLED display and “exclusive tilt OS” technology, all of which might put the A90 5G close to flagship level pricing. The 4G variant (SM-A905) is expected to feature the same screen size but is rumoured to feature a higher resolution. The phone may also feature a triple camera setup with 48MP, 12MP, and 5MP sensors. However, it might not come with a slider design. While it could launch with Android 9 Pie onboard, the smartphone should get updated to Android Q after the launch.

As for the release date, the phone might be launched sometime after the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 goes official in early August. Stay tuned with Digit for more updates.

Amazon Fire TV gets official YouTube app, while Chromecast now supports Prime Videos

Google and Amazon were locked in a very silly battle that just affected their own customers. Specifically, the two companies discontinued some of their services on the competitor’s devices. The original altercation started back in 2017 after Amazon decided not to sell Nest devices on its online platform anymore. Google retaliated by pulling its YouTube app off from the Fire TV and Echo Show, and Prime Videos not getting Chromecast support. However, the two companies have since made peace. Amazon has now announced that its compatible Fire TV devices (both, TV and dongles) will now run the official YouTube app, while Google has also confirmed that Prime Video is now on Chromecast and Android TV.

As per Amazon, the official YouTube app is now available on Amazon Fire TV Stick (2nd Gen), Fire TV Stick 4K, Fire TV Cube, Fire TV Stick Basic Edition, and all Fire TV Edition smart TVs. The app can be downloaded and installed on compatible devices from the ‘Your Apps and Channels’ row. In addition to the YouTube app, YouTube TV and YouTube Kids apps will also launch later this year on Amazon Fire TV. with the app, users will also be able to play videos in 4K HDR resolution and at 60 fps on supported TVs and streaming media players. The app will also get Alexa support, which means one can use Amazon’s digital assistant to search and play videos.

As mentioned earlier, Amazon Prime Video is now available on Google Chromecast and Android TV devices that come with built-in Chromecast support. In addition, Chromecast Ultra users will be able to access 4,000 titles included in Amazon Prime subscription for free. However, one needs to have the latest Prime Video app and Android 5.0 or higher or iOS 10.1 or higher to run the app on Chromecast.

Custom Radeon RX 5700 series graphics cards will arrive in August

AMD recently launched its Radeon 5700 and Radeon 5700XT (review) graphics cards and one of the biggest questions on many peoples’ mind was whether there will be custom cards from OEMs. In a detailed post on Reddit, AMD has confirmed that the Radeon 5700 will get custom designs from OEMs, which will be released sometime in August.

The current Navi based AMD cards use a blower style design for cooling, a decision that was apparently made to ensure parity between the numbers reported by the company and those noted by reviewers. “The Radeon group historically has had a bad reputation of producing product launch charts that didn’t match up to real world performance. Love it or hate it the blower allowed us to guarantee performance in every system to match our launch charts. Not everyone cools their PC as good as a reviewer and definitely not as good as some of the pictures you guys have shared. It was my goal to clean all of this up so that you can trust our performance you hear from us on stage," AMD's Scott Herkelman stated.

With this, we can expect to see Radeon 5700 cards with double or even triple fan setup with custom cooling solutions under the shroud. Better cooling solution would allow enthusiasts to squeeze out just a bit more out of the Navi-based GPUs, but it is perplexing as to why AMD would not synchronise the release of their current and custom cards at the same time. Regardless, it is nice to see more options coming out in the near future and given the kind of performance we’ve seen from the Radeon 5700 XT, we cannot wait to see what the custom cards will be able to do.
