WhatsApp will drop support for devices running Android 237 or iOS 7 from February 1, 2020

As the year draws to a close, WhatsApp has released a list of phones on which the popular messaging app will stop working. WhatsApp updated its FAQ section stating a few Android and iOS devices will not be able to run the app from February 1, 2020.

The FAQ section states smartphones running on Android 2.3.7 and iOS devices running on iOS 7 will not support WhatsApp from next year. WhatsApp said these devices “can no longer create new accounts, nor re-verify existing accounts after February 1, 2020.”

In addition, WhatsApp is also withdrawing official support from all Windows phones from December 31, 2019, the same time Microsoft also stops supporting devices running on Windows 10 Mobile. The app reportedly has already vanished from the Microsoft Store since July 1, 2019.

If you are using a phone that won’t be supported by WhatsApp, don’t fret. You can still save your chats and information by December 31, 2019. Tap on the chat you wish to export and hit ‘Export Chat’. You will have the option to download chat history with or without media.

To be fair, the decision to stop WhatsApp support will not affect a vast majority of users. The versions of Android and iOS which are dropped from support are quite old. Android 2.3.7 or Android Gingerbread now powers only 0.3% of all Android devices, according to the distribution dashboard on the Android Developers website, while less than 7 percent of all iOS users are on iOS 7.
