Airtel tops Tutelas speed test and latency tests, Reliance Jio offers highest download throughput rates
Tutela recently published its Mobile Experience Report for the Indian region, which features results based upon mobile experience and usage. These results are said to be sourced from the company’s crowdsourced mobile network testing and the data it aggregated between August and October 2019. As per the report, Airtel has taken the lead when it comes to speed and latency tests. We all know that higher data transfer speeds are always better and it seems like based on Tutela’s testing, Airtel has bagged the first spot with 7.1 Mbps download speeds. Vodafone came in second with a download rate of 6.3Mbps, followed by Idea with 5.5Mbps, and Jio and BSNL with 4.9Mbps and 2.9Mbps respectively.
It is worth noting that the data analysis claims to have registered 316 billion measurements in the said time period. It touts to have 8.52 billion records for the measurements with 34.6 million speed tests and 1.47 billion response tests. Additionally, the speed test results are based upon median transfer speeds for a 2MB file download and 1MB file upload. In terms of upload, Vodafone takes the top spot with 3.6Mbps upload speeds, followed by Idea with 3.2Mbps, Airtel with 3.3 Mbps and Jio and BSNL with 3.1 and 1.7Mbps respectively.
Latency is also a factor that plays a considerable role when one talks about mobile data. Ever lost a game of PUBG Mobile due to lag? If yes, then you can blame it on poor latency. Latency is a measure of delay before data packets are sent across a network and as you must’ve guessed, the lower this value, the better. In terms of latency, Airtel again tops the charts with 26.2 milliseconds of latency, while Jio is second with 27.6ms. Vodafone and Idea take the next two spots with 27.9 and 31.6 ms, while BSNL stands last with 45ms of latency.
In terms of download throughput, Jio manages to achieve the highest value of 84.6 percent and is, surprisingly, closely followed by BSNL with 84 percent. Airtel takes the third spot with 74.3 percent download throughput, while Idea and Vodafone take the second last and the final spot with 71.6 and 58.2 percent respectively. Additionally, both the latter telcos have noticeable packet loss of about 18 percent as compared to Jio, whose packet loss stands at 3.5 percent.

Netflix will be offering three new subscriptions plans for Indian users
Netflix was one of the first OTT platforms to hit the web and since then they’ve amassed millions of subscribers. When it first started offering its streaming services in India, the rates were rather high as compared to other streaming platforms like Prime Video and even Hotstar. So to combat these prices Netflix is looking at testing a new long-term subscription plan in India. The company plans on offering its users a flexible solution to their streaming needs.
Netflix is adding an annual, three month and six month subscription plan along with discounts of up to 50 percent as compared to their monthly plans. Netflix aims to target both mobile and desktop users with these new plans. In a statement to Gadgets360, a Netflix spokesperson said ,”We believe that our members may value the flexibility that comes from being able to pay for a few months at once. As always this is a test and we will only introduce it more broadly if people find it useful.” Netflix CEO Reed Hastings even said that the company was investing Rs 3000 crores to produce fresh and local content from India at an event in New Delhi last week.
Netflix is currently offering a '3 months' plan that is priced at Rs. 1,919, which is essentially a 20 percent discount from the original price of Rs 2400. The '6 months' plan also sees a drop of Rs 3,359, down from Rs 4,794 which is a 30 percent discount. And finally, the '12 months' plan is available at Rs 4,799, which is significantly less than the normal price of Rs 9,588 for a year.
