New Motorola Edge+ renders confirm 108MP primary rear camera

Motorola will be launching a new flagship smartphone this year. The name is tipped to be Motorola Edge+. The handset’s alleged live images appeared online and now, more renders have leaked, giving us a glimpse at what the device will look like. It showcases a curved display with a punch-hole display.

The renders come from the popular tipster Evan Blass, who took to Twitter to reveal the latest leaked images of the smartphone. The Motorola Edge+ appears to feature a curved panel much like that of the Vivo Nex 3 and the Huawei Mate 30 Pro. However, it retains the physical volume buttons. The 108MP branding can be seen adjacent to the rear camera setup. The Motorola flagship phone is reportedly codenamed ‘burton' or ‘racer turbo'.

The Motorola Edge+ is rumoured to feature a 6.67-inch full-HD+ (1080 x 2340 pixels) display with a punch-hole notch. In the images, the size of the hole-punch is noticeably smaller than the one on the Motorola One Vision. It will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset. It is said to come in 8GB and 12GB RAM variants. Further, it may pack a 5170mAh battery. However, there is no word on fast charging yet.

The phone was also spotted on Geekbench. It scored 4106 in the single-core test and recorded a score of 12823 in the multi-core test. Motorola Edge+ is likely to run Android 10. Other specifications of the smartphone are yet to be known. However, we expect more details to show up online as we inch closer to the launch date.

Apple iPhone 12 may be as powerful as iPad Pro thanks to A14 chipset: Report

Apple’s chipsets are known to be pretty powerful, but its upcoming A14 chipset just might take the cake. According to a report by Apple Insider, the new chipset was spotted on Geekbench and maybe just as fast as the A12X chipset used in the 12.9-inch iPad Pro. It also suggests that the new chipset may be the fist A-series chipset to cross the 3.0GHz mark in terms of clock speed.

As per the Geekbench listing posted by Apple Insider, the new A14 chipset is tipped to score 1,658 on the single-core test, and 4,612  on the multi-core test. By comparison, the A12X on the 12.9-inch iPad Pro scored 1,110 on the single-core and 4,568 on the multi-core test. Apple’s newest smartphone, the iPhone 11 Pro Max packs the A13 Bionic chipset and had a single-core score of 1,330 points.

The new chipset is expected to be manufactured using TSMCs new 5nm process. Apple is also expected to use LPDDR5 RAM, which is already in use by many flagship smartphones. There are also reports of an ARM-powered Mac that is doing rounds and there is a possibility that the Mac might be powered by the A14 chipset.

The name of the next generation of iPhone’s is still not confirmed by expected them to be known as iPhone 12. As one might expect details about the new phones have already started to leak out and reports suggest that Apple may be planning to switch to a 64MP large-format sensor for the primary camera. This would be a pretty big jump from the 12MP sensor currently utilised by the iPhone 11 Pro. Apple is also expected to increase the camera’s aperture size from f/1.8 to f/1.6. Reports also suggest that Apple may even start offering a display with a 120Hz refresh rate in its new phones.

The latest development comes from XDA-Developers. The Motorola Edge is said to feature a 6.67-inch "waterfall" display with a 90Hz refresh rate. The single punch-hole cutout housing a 25MP selfie camera. Unlike the flagship, the Edge is tipped to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 chipset, paired with 6GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage.

iOS 14 code suggests iPhone 9 Plus budget phone in the works: Report

It seems like there simply cannot be a year without some news of Apple working on a ‘budget’ iPhone. 9to5Mac claims to have learned new details about an upcoming iPhone 9 Plus smartphone studying the iOS 14 code. As the name would suggest, the iPhone 9 Plus would be a larger version of the iPhone 9 that was also hinted at in the iOS 14 code.

As per the report, both these phones may be replacements for the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus smartphones. As such, they may offer screen sizes of 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch. Previous reports suggested that the iPhone 9 may feature a Home button with Touch ID. One can assume the ‘Plus’ variant of the device to offer the same, albeit with a larger screen. The home button is also tipped to be a ‘Solid State’ button, meaning that it will have no moving parts and will use the Taptic Engine to simulate clicks. Also, the devices are not expected to come with Face ID, but will allow users to use features like Apple Pay and the Express Transit feature which is not available on older iPhones. The phones are also tipped to be able to scan NFC Tags, which is only possible on devices released from last year onwards.

However, it should be noted that the name of the new phone is not yet confirmed so the phone may be called iPhone SE 2, if Apple does decide to launch it. Although, it should be noted that nothing has been confirmed by the Cupertino-based company. Rumours of an iPhone SE 2 have been swirling for many years now and it’s best taken with a pinch of salt. Regardless, if the company does plan on launching the device, expect it to be revealed sometime alongside the launch of the next version of iOS.

Redmi K30 Pro, K30 Pro Zoom Edition confirmed to launch on March 24 in China

The Redmi K30 Pro is scheduled to launch on March 24, the Xiaomi sub-brand confirmed in a Weibo post on Tuesday. The flagship follow up to the Redmi K20 Pro was already confirmed to rock the Snapdragon 865 SoC. Furthermore, Redmi General Manager and Xiaomi President of China, Lu Weibing also teased the Redmi K30 Pro Zoom Edition that could launch alongside the K30 Pro.

The launch date was announced by the official Redmi handle on Weibo along with a teaser image that shows the rear panel of the phone in all its glory. You can notice a quad-camera setup housed in a circular module along with a gradient design with most possibly a glass exterior. Also noticeable is the 3.5mm headphone jack on top along with an IR blaster.

Previously, a teaser image had suggested that the Redmi K30 Pro will retain the pop-up camera design, a departure from the dual punch-hole selfie camera that debuted with the regular Redmi K30.

Coming to the Redmi K30 Pro Zoom Edition, the phone was first spotted in a recent MIUI 11 build and noticed by the folks over at XDA Developers. Soon enough, Redmi head Lu Weibing officially confirmed its existence on Chinese social media.

A rough translation of the Weibo post reveals he has started using a new smartphone and it’s none other the Redmi K30 Pro Zoom Edition. While details about the device remain bleak, the name itself suggests powerful zooming capabilities in the camera. In fact, the MIUI 11 camera app last year suggested the presence of 50x zoom in a future smartphone. That could just be it.

More details are expected to come out about the two devices in the run-up to the launch.

Microsoft reveals Xbox Series X specs including external SSD storage, quick resume, HDR and other features

Microsoft has been quite forthcoming with information about the Xbox Series X. At the Game Awards 2019, it showcased what the console would look like. You can check that out here. A few weeks ago, it shed light on some of the features the console would bring. You can read about that here. Today we have all the specifications of the console and some journalists and tech experts got to spend some time with the new console and give their impressions of the device. Put simply, we have information about the form factor of the console, the expandable SSD storage, how traditional external storage will work, a look at quick resume along with loading times for games and a look at some games running on the system. There is also information about the new controller. So let's quickly break it down into everything we know about the new Xbox Series X console.

Xbox Series X Specifications

We knew that the Series X would run on an AMD Zen 2 CPU coupled with RDNA 2 and dedicated RT cores for Ray Tracing along with SSD storage. Today we have a detailed breakdown of the specs. They are as follows.

CPU: 8x Cores @ 3.8 GHz (3.6 GHz w/ SMT) Custom Zen 2 CPU GPU: 12 TFLOPS, 52 CUs @ 1.825 GHz Custom RDNA 2 GPU Die Size: 360.45 mm2 Process: 7nm Enhanced Memory: 16 GB GDDR6 w/ 320b bus Memory Bandwidth: 10GB @ 560 GB/s, 6GB @ 336 GB/s Internal Storage: 1 TB Custom NVME SSD I/O Throughput: 2.4 GB/s (Raw), 4.8 GB/s (Compressed, with custom hardware decompression block) Expandable Storage: 1 TB Expansion Card (matches internal storage exactly) External Storage: USB 3.2 External HDD Support Optical Drive: 4K UHD Blu-Ray Drive Performance Target: 4K @ 60 FPS, Up to 120 FPS

From the above, it is clear that the Xbox Series X is a beast of a performer with raw hardware. One of the limitations of the console is the storage and it looks like Microsoft has worked with Seagate to come up with a storage solution that will not be the bottleneck when it comes to performance. Since the internal storage is pegged at 1TB, Microsoft has worked with Seagate to come up with a custom solution to cater to storage expansion. This external storage will work with the same level of performance as the internal SSD. How much it will cost is something that remains to be seen. So the big question still persists, will you be able to use a USB 3 storage device with the new console?

Old USB 3 Storage

Yes, you will be able to store your Series X games on an external drive but to play them, you will have to transfer them to the internal drive. How this will work is yet to be elaborated upon. But know that the Xbox Series X is compatible with the OG Xbox, Xbox 360 and the Xbox One library of games that can be stored and accessed from the comfort of an external drive.

SSD Speed and Quick Resume

Microsoft also showcased how quickly games will load on the new console. They demoed State of Decay 2 booting up and on the Series X it booted up in one-third the time as compared to the Xbox One X. Microsoft also showed the Series X switching between a few Xbox One games including State of Decay 2, Hellblade, The Cave, Ori and the Blind Forest and a few more. It didn't take more than 7-8 seconds for the game to load from a suspended state which is quite impressive.

New Controller

Stepping away from the console itself for one second, the journalists that got hands-on time with the console, got to check out the new controller as well. The biggest physical addition apart from the slightly redesigned size is the new D-Pad. It is inspired by the Xbox Elite Series 2 controller and makes it easy to access all eight directions on the D-Pad. Microsoft has also worked to reduce the latency between the input and reaction, making the gameplay smoother. There is also a dedicated share button on the controller and unfortunately, it still runs on 2 AA batteries. There is a USB-C connector this time instead of MicroUSB, in case you use a play and charge kit with the console.

Ray-tracing, HDR and Gaming Performance

Speaking of Ray Tracing, it is hardware accelerated on the Series X. Minecraft was showcased with RTX on the console, but we are still waiting to see games like Metro Exodus and Control running with Ray Tracing on the console. Gears 5 was ported to the new console and with the current port, it is running at PC Ultra settings in 4K. To put things into perspective, the graphical performance of the game is the same as that of the RTX 2080 and that's without putting in a lot of effort to optimize it. The company also showcased how HDR will work for games that have not been mastered in HDR. According to Microsoft, "With Xbox Series X, existing Xbox games, including recent titles within the ID@Xbox program, that don’t already have native HDR support will get the next-gen treatment. Xbox Series X is able to leverage an innovative HDR reconstruction technique to enhance existing SDR games with no work from developers and no impact to available CPU, GPU or memory resources."

Console design

In all the promotional material, one cannot gauge the design of the console. However, now we know how big it is. Placed next to the Xbox One X vertically, the Series X is about as tall, a lot wider but not as deep. Placed horizontally, it is taller and about the same width, but not as deep as the One X. The console is ideally kept vertically and should occupy about the same space as the One X. And on top, the green in the vents isn't an LED, rather a green pate to give the console better aesthetics.

Price and availability

Microsoft hasn't spoken about pricing yet, but the company is still committed to a holiday 2020 release date.
