Three new features of the Mi Band 5 leaked ahead of June 11 launch

Xiaomi has started teasing the next iteration of its famous Mi Band via posts detailing the upcoming Mi Band 5 fitness band on the Chinese social media platform, Weibo. While the previous reports point toward a June 11 launch, a new leak from TizenHelp claims that the upcoming fitness band will have global NFC, custom DND and some other new features.

As per the leak, the Mi Band 5 will have a larger display than the Mi Band 4, and introduce stress and breathing management, custom DND option, and global NFC function. TizenHelp has shared some images that allegedly show the previously leaked NFC function for the global variant of the band, and this feature will allow NFC payments using the tracker.

What's new on the Mi Band 5?

The Mi Band 5 is said to come with Avengers-themed watch faces for Marvel fans. As mentioned, that is rumoured to be stretched out on a bigger 1.2-inch colour display compared to Mi Band 4's 0.95-inch display.

The report also claims that the new Mi Band will still not receive an option to answer calls, but the ability to reject and silent calls will remain. The custom DND feature will let you schedule do not disturb mode on as per the need. For example, if you need to take a quick nap for an hour, you can turn on DND while wearing the band and have a 60-minute break without a nudge.

Earlier leaks have revealed that it will offer blood oxygen level detection, narrower borders, Amazon Alexa support, and a button to take a photo from the connected smartphone remotely.

As far as the price goes, we expect Xiaomi to price it economically as the USP of the Mi Bands has always been its affordability.

Over 13,500 Vivo phones found to be running with the same IMEI number

Networks rely on IMEI numbers of smartphones to prevent stolen devices from accessing the network, and to identify devices that are valid and authentic. However, Uttar Pradesh police in Meerut has discovered more than 13,500 smartphones in India are running on the same IMEI numbers, making them tougher to track. Tampering with IMEI number is an offence punishable by law, with offenders getting jailed for up to 3 years, or punishable with a fine, or both.

According to LiveMint, which spoke to Meerut police, the smartphones belonged to Chinese handset maker Vivo. The police have registered a case against the company. Vivo is among the top five smartphone makers in the country.

Reported first by PTI, the police had been doing a five-month long investigation into the issue. The matter was first discovered when a police personnel gave his phone to the staff at cyber crime cell, after the phone was not working properly after being repaired.

Upon investigating, the cyber cell found more than 13,500 other mobile phones were using the same IMEI number, leading to a serious security concern.

“Prima facie, it appears to be negligence on part of the mobile phone company, and criminals can use it to their advantage,” Meerut SP (city) Akhilesh N Singh said.

The Mint report highlights that a case under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against Vivo.

Today in 2020: Seemingly innocent wallpaper causing Android phones to crash

We’re in a year when an invisible virus has practically made the world come to a standstill. And if you thought it can’t get weirder, there’s a wallpaper that is making smartphones crash and bricked. A seemingly innocent-looking wallpaper of a sunset is causing smartphones, primarily by Samsung and Google, to crash and become unusable. There have been multiple reports about users having to factory reset their phones and losing all their data, in order to make their devices functional again, after applying the wallpaper.

Here’s the wallpaper in question —

Anyone looking at this wallpaper will see a stunning landscape with mountains, clouds and a lake. But it’s what’s happening behind the scenes that’s causing a havoc among smartphone users. Popular tipster Ice Universe also warned his followers about the wallpaper. Thankfully, it’s only the original image that’s causing phones to crash, and not when you take a screenshot or when you download it off social media.

What’s happening to phones which apply the wallpaper?

When this cursed image is set as the wallpaper, users are reporting the phone crashing and getting stuck in a bootloop. Some users got it fixed by accessing Safe Mode and changing the wallpaper, but many have had to factory reset their smartphone, ending up losing all their data.

Why is a wallpaper crashing phones?

While it’s still not completely clear, it seems like an incorrectly coded Google colour profile in the image is causing the image to wreak havoc on smartphones. In one of the discussions on Twitter about this lethal wallpaper, a Google representative named Romain Guy said “the real problem is the way luminance is computed.”

We ended up fixing the issue differently ( avoiding the color space conversion ) but here it's the real reason we have the crash https://t.co/KERlStb7bC :)

— Luca Stefani (@luca020400) June 3, 2020

According to a report by 9to5Google, the bug is not affecting devices running on the Android 11 beta, or Huawei devices with no Google support or Android phones with heavily skinned interfaces. That’s one good thing to come out of Huawei not being able to use Google services.

Will there be a fix?

According to a report by SamMobile, Samsung is close to releasing a fix that will be issued over the air. Google may also patch the issue in the forthcoming security patch.

The Reno 4, on the other hand, features a 6.43-inch Full HD+ (2400 x 1080 pixels) resolution display that uses an AMOLED panel and has dual punch-hole cutouts for two selfie cameras. Like the Reno 4 Pro, the regular Reno 4 is also protected by Gorilla Glass 6 both on the front and the back.

Oppo Reno 4 also has a triple camera setup on the back that consists of a primary 48MP camera with f/1.7 aperture, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera with 119-degree field-of-view, and a 2MP depth sensor. Unlike the Reno 4 Pro, this one supports electronic image stabilization and can record in 4K at 30fps. It has the same 32MP selfie camera as the Pro variant but is backed by a secondary 2MP depth sensor on the front as well.

Both the phones come with an optical fingerprint reader under the display and are powered by a 4,000mAh battery that supports 65W fast charging out-of-the-box, courtesy of SuperVOOC 2.0. Oppo claims that these phones can go from 0-100% in 36 minutes flat.

Call of Duty: Mobile adds new short events till the launch of Season 7

A few days ago, Activision announced that it would be delaying the new updates to Call of Duty: Warzone and Call of Duty: Mobile in the wake of the civil unrest in the United States. Call of Duty: Mobile’s new Season 7, Radioactive Agent update was due to be available this week. Understandably, this led to many of the players getting disheartened. However, it seems like the developers are making up for the delay by offing players the chance to earn a bunch of in-game items while the update comes.

The first is a new daily login bonus that will go on till June 11. Called Final Frontier, the event gives players rewards for each day they log in till June 11 up to a maximum of seven days. Prizes include a new spray called Omen and a new Wild West avatar frame. There are also two weapons. The first is a new knife with the Sand Dunes skin, while the other is the Bandit skin for the DL Q33 sniper rifle.

There is also a featured event called One Last Farewell that will go on till June 9. This gives players multiple challenges to complete. This ranges from cumulative online time to playing certain CTF matches, and more. As the player completes these challenges, they keep earning rewards. The rewards unlocked in order are the Dead or Alive spray, the Maverick spray, the Revolver frame, and Moonstone Knife.

On top of this, the developers have also added a new feature called Solo Shield that aims to protect Ranked players. In the event that a player ranked between Elite and Legendary is killed off early, they will not lose Rank XP. Currently, Solo Shield is only active for Ranked Battle Royale Matches and will only work for five matches.
