Garena Free Fire announces Halloween events, new pet and more

With Halloween just around the corner, game developers are preparing to release ‘spooky’ updates/additions to get into the spirit of the festival. Garena Free Fire is also prepping a bunch of new additions as well as content to help get players into the spirit of Halloween. The game also adds a couple of new things including a brand-new pet.

October 23 to October 29: Halloween Party Web Event

Free Fire will be hosting a web event which will include a bunch of “spooky festivities” and give players a chance to earn various rewards. This includes pumpkin attires and creepy bandanas. Other details about the event have not yet been revealed.

October 22 to November 2: New Pet - Rockie

The week will also give players the chance to get a new pet in the form of Rockie. Rockie seems to be a red panda and his skill reduces the active skill cooldown of players. So he may be useful to players who prefer to use a character with an active skill. In order to get him, players will have to top up their account with at least 1 Diamond.

Garena Free Fire has introduced a new pet called Rockie

October 25 to October 31: Reddit Creepypasta Contest

The developers have also announced a competition where players and readers are asked to submit personally created creepypastas on a particular Reddit thread. Anyone can submit the creepypasta, but the story should include an element of Free Fire. This could include skins, characters or weapons. For those who don’t know, creepypasta is a brief horror story that has been posted online. Details of the same will be revealed soon.

Besides this, there are also a bunch of other things players can look forward to. This includes the return of Cold Steel mode, a new Weapon Royale as well as a new weapon called the Blue Frame Draco. You can know more about those here.

Indian smartphone market bounces back after lockdown slump by posting record shipments in Q3 2020

The Indian smartphone market has reportedly bounced back after the slump during the lockdown period. Smartphone shipments in India hit 50 million units in Q3 2020, according to a report by Canalys, which is a record high for the market. This comes after shipments fell by almost 50 per cent during Q2 2020 when the lockdown was imposed by the government to curb the spread of COVID-19.

The report states the market grew 8% year-over-year in Q3 2020. Same time last year, India saw shipments tallying up to 46.2 million units. The Indo-China clash at the border also had its effects felt in the market after Chinese smartphone shipments fell to 74% after hitting 76% a year ago.

The top 5 players in the market remain the same, with some shuffling happening to the market share, according to the report. Xiaomi continues to lead at the top, shipping over 13.1 million units, and achieving a majority 26.1% market share in Q3 2020.

Samsung came in a close second, shipping 10.2 million units and holding 20.4% market share, followed by Vivo (8.8 million units), Realme (8.7 million units) and Oppo (6.1 million units).

In the premium segment, Apple posted a double-digit growth after the launch of its online store and deep discounts. The Cupertino giant reportedly shipped 800,000 iPhones in India.

With the festive season still on in India, there’s a lot more growth expected in the market. The iPhone 12 series launch is around the corner, while Diwali promotions for the major players are expected to improve sales even further.

OnePlus Nord N10 design teased, tipped to launch on October 26

OnePlus Nord N10 design has been teased in a leaked image online and is tipped to launch on October 26. The Nord N10 along with the Nord N100 has been leaked previously with some of their alleged key specifications already out in the open. The OnePlus Nord made its debut in India on July 21 and marked the company’s re-entry into the mid-range segment.

According to a post by tipster Max J. on Twitter, the Nord N10 could look a lot similar to the recently launched OnePlus 8T with a rectangular camera module and curved edges. The image posted by Max is essentially an outline of the purported design of the Nord N10 and there’s little to gather from it. Nevertheless, it shouldn’t be too long before we get to see the actual phone if the previous rumours are taken into account.

As per a previous report by OnLeaks, the Nord N10 5G and Nord N100 could launch on October 26. Both the phones are expected to launch in the US since the OnePlus Nord did not make it to the States. There’s no word on the launch of either of the phones in India just yet, but you never know what OnePlus has in store till it goes official.

OnePlus Nord N10 leaked specifications

OnePlus Nord N10 has leaked previously hinting that the phone could feature a 6.4-inch Full HD+ display with a 90Hz high refresh rate support.

The Nord N10 is expected to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 processor with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage in tow. The Snapdragon 690 SoC is fabricated using Samsung’s 8nm process and incorporates a 5G radio. The Snapdragon 690 is an octa-core CPU featuring two Cortex-A77 based cores and six Cortex-A55 based cores, with the two big cores being clocked at 2Ghz.

The N10 is also rumoured to be the first OnePlus phone to be equipped with a 64MP primary camera with three additional rear cameras.  The rest of the specifications remain to be revealed, but we should have more information as we near the launch date.

Reliance Jio launches JioPages web browser with support for 8 Indian languages: A look at all the features

Jio has launched its own web browser called JioPages. The web browser is available on Android only as of now and users can download it from the Google PlayStore. The press release sent by Jio reads, “While keeping privacy at the core of the browser, JioPages provides superior performance when compared to its peers. It is built on the powerful Chromium Blink engine, it provides enhanced browsing experience through faster engine migration, best-in-class webpage rendering, faster page loads, efficient media streaming, Emoji domain support and encrypted connection.” JioPages has been designed entirely in India and brings with it a host of features.

Personalised Home Screen and Themes

JioPages lets users personalise their home screen with search engines such as Google, Bing, MSN, Yahoo or Duck Duck Go, as their default search engine. Users can also pin the links of their favourite websites on the home screen for quick and easy access.

The background of the browser can also be changed and users can always opt for a dark theme if that’s something they prefer.

Personalised Content

Just like we’ve seen on Google Discover, it looks like JioPages will offer a content feed customised to suit the user’s preference. This will include language, topic and region. According to Jio, “JioPages sends notifications only on topics that are either important or of interest to the user”.

The browser will also bring with it ‘Informative Cards’ giving users information like stock market trends, commodity prices or cricket score, and more. This information is displayed in a compact clickable banner on the screen.

Regional Content

According to Jio, “The browser supports eight Indian languages: Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Gujarati, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Bengali. Users also have the option of customising the content feed according to their preferred state. Upon selecting a state, the popular sites of the state start appearing on the screen”.

Advanced Download Manager

JioPages automatically categorises downloads according to the file type such as image, video, document or pages. This helps make file management easier and also makes it easier for you to find what you’ve downloaded.

Secure incognito mode and Adblocker

The Incognito Mode gives user private browsing by “preventing browsing history from being stored in the system”. On JioPages, users also have the ability to set a four-digit security PIN or fingerprint as an access code to Incognito mode.

As for annoying ads, the browser blocks “unsolicited ads and popups” to give the user a better browsing experience.
