Google Meet Will Fuse With Google Duo To Become The New Google Meet In 2022
Google is doing it again! For the umpteenth time, Google is restructuring its Android messaging strategy. The new video conferencing app to come out of this change in plans is — drumroll, please — Google Meet. Now if you are wondering Google Meet app already exists, yes, it does. But what Google is proposing is that it will merge both Google Duo (launched in 2016) and Google Meet (launched in 2017).
So soon you’ll meet —
The All-New Google Meet: What we know so farOriginally, Google Duo was envisioned for interpersonal communication with people in your personal lives, like friends and family. Google Meet, on the other hand, was more of a video conferencing for work purposes. Hence, it was more tightly tied into Gmail and other Google Workspace apps like Google Docs.
But, now, the integrated experience of Google Meet and Google Duo, also called Google Meet will be a single solution for both video calls and meetings. It is slated to arrive later this year.
Ahead of that Google is moving some features from Meet to Duo. Google says, “In the coming weeks, we’re adding all the Google Meet features to the Duo app, so users can easily schedule a video meeting at a time that works for everyone, or continue using video calling to instantly connect with a person or group”.
And eventually, Google Duo will have all Google Meet features and the latter’s name.
While this happens, Google assures the Duo users don’t have to download a new Google messaging app. Their existing video calling features like the facility to video call anyone by phone number and email address. This rebadged app will consist of fun filters and effects, prevailing contacts, messages, conversation history, and the option to send messages, and calls through a connected device by asking Google Assistant.
Meanwhile, the new features of the rebranded app will be as follows:
Custom virtual backgrounds Scheduling of meetings In-meeting chats and live-sharing of content Real-time captions Increased limit of 100 participants Integration with Messages, Gmail, Google Calendar, Assistant, etc.In the end, the search giant promises a smooth transition experience for the users of these two Google apps. Let’s see.
In the coming weeks, we are adding #GoogleMeet features to the Duo app, and later this year, we’ll update the Duo app to #GoogleMeet, creating one video experience that's better together https://t.co/EZSM6ppHUT pic.twitter.com/n3WGkJuUIv

TikTok Vying For India Comeback, ByteDance In Talks With Hiranandani Group: Report
TikTok, one of the most popular short video apps across the world is looking to make a comeback in India, almost 2 years after the Indian government banned it along with 59 other apps. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) initiated a crackdown on apps with connections to the Chinese government. At the time of the ban, TikTok was on a rising tide with over 2 billion downloaded globally and India was one of its biggest markets with over 611 million downloads.
As per a report in The Economic Times accessed by Inc42, ByteDance is in talks with leading real estate developer, Hiranandani Group to relaunch TikTok in India. The Hiranandani Group has a diverse portfolio but ByteDance is specifically looking to ink a partnership with Yotta Infrastructure, a subsidiary which runs the world’s second-largest data centre, the Yotta NM1 in Mumbai.
With this collaboration, ByteDance will be able to store the data of users locally in India itself, thereby complying with the government regulations. A major ask by the Indian government to companies is that the Indian user's data should be stored locally and if ByteDance is successful in partnering with Yotta Infrastructure, it will have a chance at re-entering India.
Is TikTok making an Indian comeback?“There have been no formal talks with us yet. But, we have been informed of the plans. As and when they come to us for approvals, we will examine their request,” a senior government official told ET.
Another official in the know-how of things said, “Critical user data should not be stored outside India. All apps and websites have either made provisions to store data locally or are making necessary changes to their data storage and processing policies. If they come back, they will have to follow these norms."
It remains to be seen if and when TikTok is able to make its much-awaited comeback but it's going to be an arduous path especially now when homegrown apps like Josh, Moj, Roposo, MX Takatak have captured most of the existing audience to fill the void. Then there are Instagram Reels which has catapulted the short video format to new heights in India.
