WhatsApp for iOS gets Status Reactions, link creations for calls and other features

WhatsApp has released a new stable update for iOS users. As per WABetaInfo, The update is available on the Apple App Store, and users can download it on their iPhones. But does it come with any new features? As it turns out, the latest WhatsApp version for iOS has several new features, including Status Reactions, a feature that has been long in development. Here are all the new features of the latest WhatsApp for iOS.

WhatsApp for iOS v22.21.75 features: Status Reactions

WhatsApp

WhatsApp for iOS v22.21.75 is live on the App Store. Those using older versions of the app can head over to the App Store and update WhatsApp to get a hold of all the new features in the update. The main highlight of this update is the Status Reactions feature, which allows users to react to status updates posted by others, using emojis. Remember how Instagram lets users respond to others’ stories by swiping up and selecting one emoji from eight available options? The WhatsApp Status Reactions feature looks identical.

The update also comes with link creation for calls and better admin control

The new version contains the ability to create and share a link for WhatsApp calls from the Calls tab. Since many people operate professionally on WhatsApp, the feature will come in handy to organise WhatsApp calls and invite people to the call. In the past, users have complained about pressing ‘delete for me’ by mistake and cannot get the message back. Well, WhatsApp has fixed that with the new iOS update, as the latest version has a feature that allows users to undo ‘delete for me’ for a few seconds.

WhatsApp for iOS v22.21.75 also comes with a feature wherein only admins will be notified when someone leaves a group. To recall, the platform has been working on this feature for quite some time. Another feature that empowers the group admins allows them to delete others’ messages for everyone in a manner that all participants will see who deleted it. The feature will let admins tackle hate speech or inappropriate comments made in the group in a better way. It is important to mention that while WhatsApp is rolling out these features to iOS users, it might be a while before all of them get it. Unfortunately, there is no word on when these features will be available for Android users.

Will SpaceX fund Ukraine Starlink Internet or not Heres what Musk says

Tech billionaire Elon Musk says his rocket firm SpaceX will continue funding its Starlink Internet service in Ukraine, a day after he said it could no longer do so.

On the microblogging site Twitter, Musk wrote that "the hell with it... Even though Starlink is still losing money and other companies are getting billions of taxpayer $, we'll just keep funding Ukraine govt for free".

According to the BBC, Starlink has been vital for Ukraine's military and people to stay online.

Ukraine says it helped to reboot key infrastructure after Russian attacks.

Energy installations were among the facilities targeted by more than 100 Russian missiles this week. Starlink consists of thousands of satellites in low-Earth orbit and ground terminals.

Last month, Musk asked the Pentagon to fund the Starlink programme instead of him, according to the US media.

And on Friday, he tweeted: "SpaceX is not asking to recoup past expenses, but also cannot fund the existing system indefinitely". That move drew strong criticism.

Earlier, Musk provoked Kyiv's ire by suggesting Ukraine could cede territory to Russia.

Sony and Honda pre-orders for their first EV to begin in 2025

Sony Honda Mobility Inc. (SHM), the joint venture of Sony and Honda, is launching its first Electronic Vehicle (EV). The company will begin accepting pre-orders in the first half of 2025, hoping to start its first deliveries in the United States by spring 2026, and in Japan in the second half of 2026. The company also plans to launch in Europe, but this information is vague. However, the pricing, battery technology, or range details are unknown, but the first model will likely have a higher price range.

New EVs will have a higher price range

During the event, the company didn't disclose a glimpse of the vehicle they are working on. However, they're planning to focus on online sales like Tesla. Honda will manufacture the first model at its facility in North America, while Sony will be in charge of developing the vehicle's software system and sensors. The company aims to create a Level 3 autonomous driving system, which means its cars will eventually have self-drive capabilities.

SMH Chairman and CEO Yasuhide Mizuno said during the event that the joint company is "speedily" developing its first vehicle. He added their car would be a turning point for vehicle electrification. The company will also offer new types of in-vehicle entertainment. In addition, Sony's software system will offer a monthly entertainment and other services subscription, providing SMH with recurring revenue.

Nvidia cancels the unreleased 12GB RTX 4080, says its not named right

In September 2022, popular graphics chip maker Nvidia announced that it would release two GeForce RTX 4080 models. While one of these was the 12GB RTX 4080, the other was the 16GB RTX 4080. However, the company faced criticism when fans realised that the graphic cards that belong to the same series have a considerable difference in their performance. Now, Nvidia has decided to “unlaunch” the 12GB RTX 4080, stating that it is not named right.

Nvidia cancels 12GB RTX 4080

In a press release, the California-based graphics card manufacturer Nvidia says that “the RTX 4080 12GB is a fantastic graphics card, but it’s not named right. Having two GPUs with the 4080 designation is confusing.” Adding to it, the company mentions, “we’re pressing the unlaunch button on the 4080 12GB. The RTX 4080 16GB is amazing and on track to delight gamers everywhere on November 16th.” It is important to highlight that the RTX 4080 15GB SKU was cancelled before its release.

As per the statistics released by the company, the 12GB RTX 4080 graphics card trailed behind the 16GB RTX 4080 by up to 30% while playing popular titles. The difference is also evident in the technical specifications of the graphics cards. While the 12GB RTX 4080 was supposed to come with 7,680 CUDA cores and a 192-bit memory bus, the 16GB RTX 4080 has 9,726 CUDA cores and a 256-bit memory bus. If players bought the 12GB RTX 4080 thinking that there are no differences between the graphics card except the RAM, they would have ended up being disappointed.

Nvidia could keep it going with RTX 4090 and 16GB RTX 4080

Anyways, the RTX 4090 launch will keep up the hype for the company for now. The graphics card is Nvidia’s best chip and costs $1,599 or Rs. 1,55,000. Those who cannot spend that amount can go for the 16GB RTX 4080 at $1,199 or Rs. 1,16,000, which is still a capable graphics processor. It will be available in the markets from November 16th, 2022. As far as the cancelled card is concerned, Nvidia can relaunch it as the RTX 4070 or the RTX 4070 Ti.

SpaceX cannot pay for the Starlink services in Ukraine anymore, writes letter to Pentagon asking seeking funds

On October 14, 2022, CNN reported that SpaceX’s charitable contributions to the Ukrainian army could end. The Starlink division of SpaceX has warned that it will stop providing broadband service in Ukraine unless the United States military and Pentagon take over the funding. Recently, Musk’s peace plan for Ukraine and Russia received criticism, not only from netizens but from Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky.

SpaceX’s official writes to Pentagon seeking funding for Starlink services in Ukraine

As per documents obtained by the publication, SpaceX’s director of government sales wrote a letter to the Pentagon last month. In the letter, the official writes, “we are not in a position to further donate terminals to Ukraine or fund the existing terminals for an indefinite period of time.”

Bad reporting by FT. This article falsely claims that Starlink terminals & service were paid for, when only a small percentage have been. This operation has cost SpaceX $80M & will exceed $100M by end of year. As for what’s happening on the battlefield, that’s classified.

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) October 7, 2022

Clearing out the timeline, Russia attacked Ukraine in February 2022, after which several nations worldwide sent help to the country in eastern Europe. In March 2022, SpaceX’s Starlink announced that it had sent thousands of satellite internet kits to Ukraine to “ensure people are still communicating,” said company president Gwynne Shotwell.

How much did it cost for SpaceX to send satellite terminals to Ukraine?

After Russia’s invasion, SpaceX sent Starlink satellite terminals as aid to the Ukrainian military. Since then, Ukraine’s military has relied heavily on the bandwidth provided by Starlink for its ground operations. Initially, the United States provided $3 million to Starlink for the cause; the Musk-led company has been bearing all the expenses.

On October 7, 2022, Musk tweeted in reply to a FT journalist that the Ukrainian Starlink operation has “cost SpaceX $80M & will exceed $100M by end of year,” and could cost as much as $400 million for the next 12 months. Musk also highlighted that only a “small percentage” of the terminals and services provided to the affected country was paid for by other organisations.

By June 2022, SpaceX had sent over 15,000 Starlink kits to Ukraine, which had been extremely useful for the country’s officials. At the moment, the Ukrainian sky has about 20,000 Starlink satellites. However, contrary to Musk's tweet, the CNN report says that “the vast majority of the 20,000 terminals have received full or partial funding from outside sources, including the US government, the UK and Poland.”

Google Meet to automatically zoom in on your face for more visibility

New Delhi, Oct 15 (IANS) Tech giant Google has announced a new feature for Meet users to improve visibility by automatically framing the video.

Before a user attends a meeting, Meet will automatically frame the video to ensure that everyone is equally visible, the company said in a blogpost.

There are no motion disturbances that could draw attention away from the meeting's subject because the automatic framing only happens once. But the video can be reframed manually at any time.

This feature does not have an admin control. By default, this function will be disabled, however, it can be turned on by the user.

The new feature is scheduled to roll out on November 2, the company said.

The feature was first announced during the Google Cloud Next 2022.

Earlier, the company had announced a Meet feature that enable users to unmute themselves by holding down the spacebar and to mute themselves again by releasing it.

The company said it will make it easier for users to participate in their meetings by quickly unmuting to say something.

"This feature helps in situations where you forget to mute again after unmuting yourself. This feature is OFF by default and can be enabled in the Google Meet settings," the company said.

The company said it changed how the "Hey Google" voice control works for Google Meet hardware devices.

With this update, the Google Assistant will only be active when a device is not in a meeting and within 10 minutes of an upcoming meeting.
