Apple is making major changes to the iPad Pro: Check new features

As the tablet market faces a slump, Apple is planning a much-needed revamp of its iPad Pro, aiming to reinvigorate the market and boost its declining sales. The iPad, once seen as a potential successor to the Mac, has been experiencing a decline in sales, slipping to its lowest levels since the onset of the pandemic in early 2020. This decline is not exclusive to Apple though, as others including Samsung and Lenovo are also facing the heat or lack thereof.

However, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the new iPad Pro models are coming and they are expected to give iPad sales a much-needed boost. But they won't be part of the company's big launch event in September, which will focus on the iPhone and Apple Watch. Instead, the new iPad Pro models are expected to debut in spring or early summer. With this major overhaul, Apple aims to breathe new life into the iPad Pro and reinvigorate the tablet market

Why Are People Not Buying The Apple iPad?

 iPad Pro Gen 3

The absent urgency among consumers to buy or upgrade tablets could be due to a couple of reasons. The recession and the economic downturn across the globe are pretty hard-hitting and the cost of living is higher than ever before.

Combined with the fact that MacBooks now also use the same chip as the iPads thus essentially offering similar computing performance. All the while, a MacBook remains more versatile and capable than an iPad. Thanks to the full-fledged MacOS which makes the iPadOS look barebones, in terms of features, by comparison.

However, Apple is gearing up to change the narrative with a major overhaul of its iPad Pro. The new models codenamed - J717, J718, J720, and J721 - are set to feature the next-generation M3 chip and OLED displays, making them crisper, brighter, and more colour-accurate. Additionally, a revamped Magic Keyboard will make the iPad Pro more laptop-like, addressing a common complaint about the current version.

 iPad Pro Gen 3

This overhaul marks the first major update to the product since 2018, although the current iPad Pro has been upgraded with new chips, cameras, display technology, and sensors in more recent years. The new models will come in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes, similar to the existing lineup, but the larger model is currently 12.9 inches.

Despite the challenges faced by the iPad, Apple remains the market leader in tablets, holding 37% of shipments last quarter. While its sales are declining, most rivals are falling even faster, while only Xiaomi grew in the last quarter.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra could have a flat display, as per leaks: Why that could be bad

Samsung usually launches its flagship S-series lineup in the first quarter of the year. However, months before the launch of the highly-anticipated Samsung Galaxy S24 series, leaks have already begun pouring in. Recently, leaked renders of the Samsung Galaxy S24 ultra surfaced online that detail display specifications and design elements. The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra could feature a flat display. This is a huge departure from the curved display on this year’s Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra (review).

Tipster ICE Universe took to microblogging platform X (previously Twitter) to show off a rendered image of the upcoming Galaxy S24 Ultra from the South Korean tech giant. The image shows a centre-aligned selfie camera and a seemingly flat display. You can also see the bezels of the upcoming flagship in the leaked image, which look thicker than its predecessor. The post by ICE Universe also revealed certain display specifications of the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra: Display specifications leaked

As mentioned earlier, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is tipped to come with a flat display and thicker bezels. The post also leaked other alleged display specifications, and given the tipster’s track record of sharing accurate specifications of devices before launch, they could very well be true.

Exclusive: Galaxy S24 Ultra about 6.8" (actual 6.78") screen, 3120x1440, 19.5:5, peak brightness 2500nit. pic.twitter.com/8I1UtTkyaY

— ICE UNIVERSE (@UniverseIce) August 28, 2023

The leak says that the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra will feature a 6.78-inch display with a resolution of 3120 x 1440 pixels. The display is expected to have a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. Additionally, the peak brightness levels are expected to go all the way up to 2,500 nits this time around; a notable improvement compared to 1,750 nits on the S23 Ultra. It is possible this is Samsung’s M13 panel that has been rumoured for quite a while now.

Why the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra’s flat display could be a bad thing

There’s a certain division between tech enthusiasts when it comes to flat vs. curved displays. Users who side with flat displays like the fact that they reject accidental touches better while curved display lovers opine that they are more comfortable to hold. Another point in favour of curved displays is that the bezels often end up looking narrower since the screen tends to spill over the edge, giving them a more premium look.

In the render of the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, the flat display seems to have noticeably thicker bezels than its predecessor. And if leaked renders of competitors such as the iPhone 15 Ultra and Xiaomi 14 are to be believed, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra looks the most dated with the thickest bezels. So, the company could lose out to these competitors when it comes to design and aesthetics.

Boat confirmed its new category of products a while back, which is Smart Ring. The Smart Ring is exactly what it sounds like. Just like smartwatches, it can be used to track your health status. AMD unveils Radeon RX 7700 XT and RX 7800 XT Graphics Cards at Gamescom 2023

AMD unveiled two new graphics cards - the AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT and RX 7800 XT - at Gamescom 2023. These two new GPUs join the flagship RX 7900 XT, 7900 and the lower mid-range 7600 cards. Both cards being announced today are based on the same RDNA 3 microarchitecture and have support for AV1 Codec as well as DisplayPort 2.1. The cards will be available for sale on the 6th of September, 2023 but pricing for either card is yet to be revealed. Indian prices for the cards will also be revealed closer to launch.

AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT Specifications

The RX 7700 XT, while positioned as a mid-range card, boasts specifications that would have been considered top-tier just a few years ago. With 54 Compute Units and an equal number of RT Accelerators, this card is designed to handle ray-tracing with ease. The inclusion of 108 AI Accelerators hints at AMD's focus on AI-driven tasks, potentially offering enhanced gaming experiences and more efficient content creation workflows.

AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT Specs

The game clock speeds peak at 2171 MHz, with a boost clock reaching 2544 MHz. Paired with 12 GB of GDDR6 memory running at 18 Gbps on a 192-bit interface, this card promises to handle modern AAA games with ease. There’s also the 48 MB AMD Infinity Cache which acts as an additional memory cache that will further reduce latency and improve overall performance.

AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT Specifications

For those seeking to get a few more frames, there’s the RX 7800 XT. With 60 Compute Units and an equal number of RT Accelerators, the 7800 XT offers slightly better ray-tracing performance. Similarly, the 120 AI Accelerators will come into play as more software incorporate AI features.

AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT

The game clock on the RX 7800 XT is slightly lower than its sibling at 2124 MHz, but its boost clock still reaches 2430 MHz. This is common when the cores within a CPU or GPU scale. Also, it would seem that AMD is not holding back on the memory front. With a whopping 16 GB of GDDR6 memory running at 19.5 Gbps on a 256-bit interface, this card is designed to handle higher quality textures and run at higher resolutions, be it 4K gaming, VR, or high-end content creation. Although, AMD is primarily positioning both cards for 1440p gaming. And, there’s also 64 MB of AMD Infinity Cache to help get a little extra performance.

AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT performance

Both cards come with support for DisplayPort 2.1 and AV1, ensuring compatibility with the latest displays and also include support for what’s purported to be the next mainstream CODEC. The total board power for the RX 7700 XT and RX 7800 XT stands at 245 W and 263 W. AMD has had a rather disastrous launch with the RX 7600 which offered incremental performance gains over the 6650 XT, so we can only hope that the 7700 XT and 7800 XT offer a lot more than their predecessors, especially since these are launching about nine months after the first RDNA 3 card was announced. In the above graph, we only see the 7800 XT and 7700 XT cards being compared against the 4-year old RDNA 1-based RX 5700 XT from AMD. So the performance gains over the 6000 series cards will only be clear once the reviews are out.

Software Improvements: FSR 3 and Hyper-RX

AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) and Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) have been great additions on the software front, especially considering that FSR is more open and is not locked to the latest-gen cards. However, FSR developments have slowed a little compared to the competition and with FSR 3, they’re playing catch up with the introduction of Fluid Motion Frames which is similar to Frame Generation from NVIDIA. FSR 3.0 was announced last year alongside RDNA 3 but has not been launched yet. If rumours are to be believed, we might see FSR 3.0 sometime next month. Several video games, already launched and those yet to be, have promised to incorporate FSR 3.0. These include games such as CyberPunk 2077, Frostpunk 2, Starship Troopers Extermination, Immortals of Aveum and more.

AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT FSR 3

Another interesting announcement is that of Hypr-RX. AMD’s software stack has had several interesting technologies to improve the experience of gamers. These include AMD Radeon Boost, Anti-Lag and Radeon Super Resolution. Unfortunately, all of these technologies could not be used in tandem. That limitation goes away with Hypr-RX which ensures that all three technologies will work at the same time. AMD also stated that Fluid Motion Frames, a technology that generates and interpolates frames to boost FPS, will also be included in the driver itself. However, this will not happen at the launch of Hypr-RX. That will come a little later.
