AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT graphics card to cost Rs 64,990 excluding GST in India

AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT graphics card price has been revealed in India after the company announced the Radeon RX 6000-series back in October. AMD’s new Radeon RX 6000-series based on the new RDNA2 microarchitecture include the RX 6900 XT, RX 6800 XT and RX 6800 graphics cards. The SEP (suggested e-tailer pricing) of the RX 6800 XT has finally been revealed for India.

According to a post on Instagram, the AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT is priced at Rs 64,990 excluding GST. Additionally, the company states that partner cards based on the reference card will be announced in the coming days. The new RX 6800 XT is not listed on the official AMD store and neither on online shopping websites already selling the RX 6800. However, do note that the price revealed by AMD is of the reference card and there is still no clarity on when the partner cards will arrive in India.

A post shared by AMDIndia (@amd.india)

This announcement comes after the chip-maker revealed the pricing of the RX 6800 GPU last week. The SEP for the Radeon RX 6800 is Rs 45,999 with partner cards from Sapphire getting listed Rs 55,999 and Rs 65,000. However, the RX 6800 is currently out-of-stock online.

The AMD Radeon RX 6000 series of graphics card are capable of driving twice the performance over the previous generation with features like the Infinity Cache, Smart Access Memory, Microsoft DirectX Raytracing (DXR) and DirectStorage support and more. The RX 6800 XT gets 16GB of GDDR6 memory for 4K gaming and has 72 compute units with a 2015MHz base clock speed and up to 2250MHz boost clock speeds.

The RDNA2 microarchitecture in the cards allows twice the bandwidth while consuming 10% less power and reportedly has achieved 54% gains in performance over the previous generation. AMD is offering 4K gaming pitting it against NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 3070, 3080 and 3090 series graphics card that was launched back in September.

Some of the features of the RDNA2 cards includes 128MB of L3 Infinity Cache that ensures more frame rates at high resolutions. Then, there’s the support for DirectX 12 Ultimate which brings Microsoft DXR Ray Tracing API, improved variable-rate shading and more. The new cards also support DirectStorage that allows the SSD to move data to the GPU’s VRAM quickly which is why Sony and Microsoft have also adopted this on the new PS5 and Xbox Series X and S.

BIS delaying import of iPhone 12, Xiaomi and Oppo devices from China: Report

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is reportedly delaying import approvals since August and consumer electronics makers are feeling the heat as it is causing several delays in availability. The BIS is a quality control agency set-up by the government of India that generally processes import applications within 15 days. However, as per the new information, application approvals are now taking two months or more.

According to a report by Reuters that cites anonymous sources, BIS started holding up approvals for China-made products from August after a clash on the border. With the delay in import approvals, Apple’s iPhone 12 series faced a set back in making the latest iPhones available in India.

“When Apple’s new iPhone 12 was caught in the delays, Apple India executives called on BIS to speed its approval up, giving assurances that the company would continue to expand its assembly operations in India,” two sources told Reuters. While Apple has started assembling iPhones in India, the newer iPhone 12 series is imported from China where it is assembled.

Some of the other products that have faced delays in import approvals include smartwatches from Xiaomi and Oppo. Moreover, the BIS website currently lists over 1,000 applications for laptops and other devices as pending which shows the agency’s lacklustre nature when it comes to approving import applications for products originating from China. The report mentions that some of the pending applications have been submitted back in September and still have not been approved.

As the BIS is allegedly causing delays in approvals for products like smartphones and smartwatches, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology is “pushing companies” to make these devices in India, according to the report. The import clearance is definitely hurting many technology brands in India as it is leading to delayed availability.

Since the confrontation, the Indian government has been on a spree of putting a ban on apps that it deems engaged in activities with China. Just past this week, the government put a ban on 43 more mobile apps taking the total number of banned apps in India this year to 220. The government had earlier in June put a ban on 59 mobile apps and on September 2 it issued an order to ban 118 more apps. These banned apps include popular names such as PUBG Mobile, TikTok, AliExpress, UC Browser and more.

Microsoft could bring Android apps to Windows 10 in 2021: Report

You can already run Android apps on Windows using emulators such as BlueStacks and BlueWave, but there have been reports circulating that Microsoft would officially add support to run Android applications on Windows natively in the coming year.

A Windows Central journalist Zac Bowden reports that Android support would be coming to Windows 10 and the app deliverables would via the Microsoft Store. The speculated reports do not clarify if the implementation would be on the x86 version of the operating system or the ARM version. Although, the ARM version makes more sense as Android apps natively run on ARM-based operating systems.

As mentioned in the article, I've also heard whispers that MS is once again looking into bringing Android apps to Windows next year. I'll share more when I can, but I find it interesting that this is still something they want to do.

— Zac Bowden (@zacbowden) November 24, 2020

Keeping in mind that most of the applications require Google Play Support services to function, but it is unclear whether Microsoft would be offering this suite of services or not. We have seen before the implementation of native applications for BlackBerry OS and Windows 10 Mobile preview did not require the support of Google Play Support services, so it would be interesting to see how Microsoft wishes to implement this functionality in the coming days.

Nonetheless, it would be a welcome addition for Windows 10 users to see the implementation and support of native Android applications especially when the competition: Apple has been adding the support for iOS and iPad applications for their Mac OS in wake of bridging the gap between Mobile and PC platforms.

Hopefully, this encourages developers to add support for large screen devices as this has been one of the minor complaints about foldable devices as still, we can see black bars and non-native aspect ratios in many of the apps on a large screen device.

Apple iPhone 12 Pro costs roughly Rs 30,000 to make but starts at Rs 1,19,000 in India

Apple iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro cost roughly Rs 27,500 and Rs 30,000 to make, as per a new teardown report that reveals the Bill of Materials (BoM) for the two phones. The iPhone 12 was launched alongside the iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone 12 Mini in October and have recently gone on sale in India. The iPhone 12 is priced starting at Rs 79,900 while the iPhone 12 Pro starts at Rs 1,19,900.

According to a new teardown report by Nikkei in collaboration with Tokyo-based research specialist Fomalhaut Techno Solutions, the BoM for the iPhone 12 totals to $373 (~Rs 27,500) while that of the iPhone 12 Pro is $406 (~Rs 29,900). Do note, however, that various overhead charges go into deciding the retail price of the phone.

The report also indicates that the most expensive parts inside the iPhone 12 series are the Qualcomm X55 5G modem at $90 followed by the OLED display that is manufactured by Samsung at $70. Sony is the key supplier for the camera sensors used in iPhone 12 Pro including the wide-angle and telephoto camera that is priced between $5.40-$7.40 per unit. Moreover, the A14 Bionic chip that powers the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro is expectedly priced at $40 with RAM and memory chips supplied by Samsung costing $12.8 and $19.2 per unit respectively.

Additionally, the battery on the iPhone 12 series has been redesigned and the report states that the capacity was cut by 10% in order to get additional space for new components. The battery cells are made by Amperex Technology Ltd which is a Hong-Kong based company.

The teardown report also reveals the origin of the component providers with South Korea accounting for 26.8% of share followed by the US and Europe at 21.9%. The report notes that while China accounts for less than 5% of the component share, Apple still prefers to outsource iPhone assembling to producing sites in China. The other two countries from where the components are sourced include Japan and Taiwan with a 13.6% and 11.1% share, respectively.
