Bioware mercifully cancels Anthem, citing pandemic production issues

Sigh, Bioware, how far the mighty have fallen. From genre-defining titles like the Mass Effect series and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic to the crime against humanity that is Anthem, Bioware are no longer the powerhouse they once were. Long thought of as one of the biggest names in gaming, Bioware has gone from AAA developer to a mess of a studio that can’t even release a working game. Case in point, Anthem and the terrible Mass Effect: Andromeda. Well, you can say goodbye to one of the games now as Bioware have finally and mercifully cancelled Anthem.

Anthem is no longer a priority at Bioware and has been cancelled

If you’re a masochist and still want to play the game, you can. The servers are still up for now but there has not been an update since September 2019. The last addition to the game was the Anthem Cataclysm update. No real reason has been given for the cancellation but studio director Christian Dailey did say that the COVID-19 pandemic affected productivity. Rather convenient, when the only reason should be that Anthem was a broken mess of a game. He did go on to say that the company was shifting focus to games like Dragon Age, and Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Anthem is mercifully cancelled by Bioware

In a report on TechRadar, Christian did also state, “I know this will be disappointing to the community of Anthem players who have been excited to see the improvements we’ve been working on. It’s also disappointing for the team who were doing brilliant work.”. Well, if it was such good work, then why wasn't the game polished in the first pace? The game even received an update that enabled Nvidia Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) and Nvidia Highlights to it. You can read more about that here.

Redmi K40 likely to be a gaming phone, to support 300+Hz touch sampling rate and gaming accessories

Redmi will launch its flagship K40 series phones in China today. Likely to be populated by the K40 and K40 Pro, the flagship series will be unveiled at a launch event in China which will begin at 7.30pm local time (5pm IST). The K40 series has already been teased a few times ahead of the launch. In fact, the K40 is also confirmed to sport a price tag of CNY 2,999.

Now, the company has released more details about the phone giving us a better idea of what we can expect from the K40 series. The new information comes courtesy of fresh teasers released by Redmi General Manager Lu Weibing. In a slew of fresh teasers on Weibo, Weibing confirms the Redmi K40 series phone will come with a 300+Hz touch sampling rate display. Interestingly, if this ends up being true, it will be the fastest on a phone so far.

Redmi K40 could be a fast gaming phone

The new teaser also reveals the presence of an advanced vibration motor for better haptic feedback. The K40 is also teased to offer Hi-Res Audio and support Dolby panoramic sound. Further, the teaser also suggests one of the phones will house add-on shoulder buttons for gaming. These can be adjusted for comfort and will allow function mapping for improved performance. Last, but not least, there will also be a fan accessory that clips the phone. All these appear to be a clear hint that the upcoming K40 series devices will be gaming smartphones.

Redmi K40 could come with advance vibration motor

This is also not the first time the company has teased the K40 series phones. Earlier, teasers have confirmed that one of the Redmi K40 series phones will be powered by a fast Snapdragon 888 SoC and offer a 120Hz refresh rate display. While there is no confirmation, reports suggest that it will be the higher-end Redmi K40 Pro which will be powered by the Snapdragon 888 chipset -- and also sport the features mentioned above. The vanilla variant is tipped to offer the Snapdragon 870 chipset.

FAU-G to release multiplayer Team Deathmatch mode soon

While PUBG remains missing in action, home-grown nCore Games is leaving no stone unturned to create a dent in the battle royale genre with Fearless And United Guards a.k.a FAU-G. The developers have announced that they will soon introduce a multiplayer Team Deathmatch mode in FAU-G which has also been teased previously.

nCore Games took to Twitter and announced that the game is set to receive a multiplayer Team Deathmatch mode which will allow players to form a squad as they will likely be dropped into the battle zone. The developers are yet to reveal more details about this particular mode. We can expect that with the new mode, the developers will also release new maps as teased in the released imaged.

Find your friends, form your squad, fight for freedom! FAU-G’s multiplayer Team Deathmatch mode is coming soon! Download now: https://ift.tt/2MQHNar #Multiplayer #atmanirbharbharat@vishalgondal @akshaykumar @dayanidhimg @BharatKeVeer pic.twitter.com/uVINImMIqb

— nCORE Games (@nCore_games) February 24, 2021

FAU-G was released earlier this year and within days of its launch, it crossed over 50 lakh downloads, becoming the top free game on the Play Store. Previously, the game had reportedly received 4 million pre-registrations in the weeks up to its official release. However, shortly after its initial popularity, the game took a nosedive as its rating dropped from 3.9 stars to 3.5 stars. The reason behind this could potentially be the hype surrounding the game, but the final product was not up to the standard that players were expecting.

FAU-G released to middling reviews

In our review of FAU-G, we noted that while the idea behind the game was good, the execution was lacking. We found movement to be quite limited, while the gameplay was quite repetitive, to say the least. We liked the idea of telling the stories of Indian soldiers via storylines in the game as the devs did with the Galwan Valley level. There is minimal in-game advertising which is a plus but the overall package needs to better. We even laid down five points that the devs need to work on to improve the overall gameplay experience. You can read more about that here.

Upon its release, FAU-G had a single-player story mode that gave players a glimpse of the Galwan Valley. The Team Deathmatch mode and Free For All mode were also teased in the menu options. The developers have not revealed an exact date for the launch of the Team Deathmatch mode in FAU-G, and have only said it is coming soon.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 Delayed Past 2021

Paradox Interactive has announced that their much-anticipated sequel to the beloved horror RPG, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 will no longer be releasing in 2021. The publisher is also removing its lead developer Hardsuit Labs from the project, and bringing in a different team to finish the game.

An update to the development of Bloodlines 2 is live. Read it here: https://t.co/5yhJXamMjv pic.twitter.com/3XKn0F36cM

— Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 (@VtM_Bloodlines) February 23, 2021

The announcement comes as part of the company’s year-end financial report, which describes how the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has affected its business. It states that the virus-induced work-from-home condition has been making it difficult for the studio organization to maintain the usual production pace, thereby forcing them to postpone several planned yet uncommunicated releases for the year 2021. This, of course, includes the long-cursed delay of Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2, which was previously rescheduled to come out this year. Additionally, the project will also be seeing a change in leadership, as Hardsuit Labs will be replaced with a newer studio. As of now, there is no word on the new collaborators or a release window. However, in a follow-up blog post on the official Bloodlines 2 website, the developer revealed that they have stopped accepting pre-orders for the time being.

It further reads, “This game is very important to us and it has been an ambitious project from the very start. In order to meet our goals for it, we’ve come to the conclusion that a change is needed and, as a result, more development time is required.” The statement also expressed its gratitude towards Hardsuit Labs by thanking them for their hard work and determination in laying the foundations for Bloodlines 2. Any further updates on its development cycle will be shared in the near future.

The aforementioned changes in direction follow the firing of the game’s lead narrative designer - Brian Mitsoda and its creative director - Ka’ai Cluney, back in August as part of an organizational update. The duo was then replaced by Alexandre Mandryka, who filled the role of creative director for Bloodlines 2. As bad as this entire ordeal sounds, long-time Vampire fans can still rest easy, as Swansong, an all-new story-driven choice-based RPG is still set to come out this year. The game was first revealed at Nacon Connect along with a bunch of other titles, of which you can check out further details here.

Late last year, we had also reported on a Vampire-based battle-royale game that Sharkmob was working on, for which they even released a teaser trailer. You can read more on that here.

Things Get Bloody And Violent In Mortal Kombat Trailer

Warner Bros. Pictures has finally released the first official, red band trailer for Simon McQuoid’s upcoming Mortal Kombat movie. Debuting just a month after they revealed the first look for the film, the gory trailer proceeds to give a seemingly accurate depiction of the iconic video game franchise. The film is set to release on 16 April 2021 in theatres and on the HBO Max streaming service.

Get over here! Watch the trailer for Mortal Kombat now — in theaters and streaming exclusively on HBO Max April 16. #MortalKombatMovie pic.twitter.com/eFhQhbdNUl

— Mortal Kombat Movie (@MKMovie) February 18, 2021

The trailer opens up with a flashback sequence, serving as an origin story for Jax Briggs (Mehcad Brooks), as he loses his arms in a short-lasting encounter with Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim), a wanted fugitive. Seven years from then, we are introduced to a never-seen-before character - Cole Young (Lewis Tan), an MMA fighter bearing the Mortal Kombat mark, who seeks out Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee) at the directions of Jax. As the trailer progresses, we learn that Cole is in fact the Chosen One. The one to defend the Earthrealm from the enemies of the Outworld in a high stakes tournament for the universe. The next couple of shots takes us to a remote village where we get to see the origin story of the feud between Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada) and Sub-Zero. Here, we are treated to Hanzo’s skills as a ninja as he single-handedly defeats the incoming horde of the Lin Kuei assassin clan, in a series of “fatalities”. The remaining members, however, end up killing everyone in his village, including his wife and children. Which directly translates to his hatred for Sub-Zero and his evil clan.

From there, the trailer transitions into a montage and introduces the warriors of the Earthrealm. In addition to the aforementioned - Cole, Sonya and Jax, we have the laser-beaming Kano (Josh Lawson), fire-bending Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), and Kung Lau (Max Huang) with his Razor-Rimmed Hat. The team will be led by Lord Raiden (Tadanobu Asano), the eternal God of Thunder, who will oversee their training as well. Additionally, we get some quick glimpses at Jax’s cybernetic arms, the resurrection and transformation of Scorpion, the sharp-toothed Mileena (Sisi Stringer), former champion Goro, and even Shang Tsung (Chin Han), the primary antagonist and Emperor of the Outworld. The end of the extremely generous trailer also features the ultimate battle between Scorpion and Sub-Zero, which looks like a direct reflection of the video games. Key details being Sub-Zero turning his opponent’s blood into a practical kunai knife, and then throwing them into an ice wall. It’s clear that the creators of this film are paying close attention to the tiniest details, trying to portray accurate depictions of these characters and set pieces. Even going as far as making Scorpion say his iconic line - “GET OVER HERE!”, as he yanks Sub-Zero with his kunai-harpoon hybrid weapon. This movie is going to be a blast!

Mortal Kombat

Directed by Simon McQuoid, Mortal Kombat is an upcoming martial arts fantasy film based on the video game franchise of the same name. Serving as a reboot to the fairly unsuccessful MK film series, the story follows an MMA fighter - Cole Young, as he seeks out Earth’s greatest champions to fight the enemies of the Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe. Adding onto the ensemble cast, the film also stars Daniel Nelson, Laura Brent, Matilda Kimber and Elisa Cadwell. The script is written by Greg Russo, Dave Callaham (Wonder Woman 1984), and Oren Uziel (22 Jump Street), with James Wan (director of Aquaman) serving as a producer.

The Mortal Kombat franchise, despite having an iconic and successful run in the video games industry is something that has failed when it came down to a cinematic adaptation. In fact, this issue has been consistent with most video game adaptations out there. But judging by this new cold-blooded trailer, and the images we’ve seen from the upcoming Uncharted movie, it looks like the curse is finally about to be lifted.

Being an R-rated movie, the trailer for Mortal Kombat is age-restricted on YouTube, and will only play if you are signed-in. Which is why we linked the Twitter video above. But if you still wish to watch it on YouTube, you can do so by clicking right below.
