Apple beefs up performance on iMac range, introduces Intel 9th Gen CPUs, Radeon graphics

Highlights: Apple updates iMac lineup Introduces 9th Gen Intel Core series CPUs Brings Radeon graphics to some models   Just a couple of days after launching a refreshed iPad Air and iPad mini, Apple has updated its popular desktop computer, the iMac. The 21.5-inch model comes with Intel’s 8th generation of Core series CPUs, while the 27-inch model comes with Intel’s 9th generation of Core series CPUs. Both models are available in the US starting today from Apple’s website and the Apple Store App. Prices of the iMac start at $1,099 (Rs 76,000 approx). The biggest update to Apple’s iMac lineup is in the CPU and graphics department. Firstly, the 21.5-inch model now comes in a Retina 4K version (with a 4K display, that is), which is configurable up to a 3.2GHz 6-core Intel Core i7 CPU with up to 32GB of RAM and 1TB Fusion Drive or up to 1TB SSD. Onboard graphics get an upgrade as Apple has included the option of a Radeon Pro 555X with 2GB of video RAM, Radeon Pro 560X with 4GB of video RAM, or Radeon Pro Vega 20 with 4GB of video RAM. The non-4K variant of the 21.5-inch iMac gets absolutely no updates whatsoever. The 27-inch iMac comes with a Retina 5K display. Unlike the 21.5-inch model, which only gets 8th Gen Intel Core series CPUs, the 27-inch iMac is configurable up to a 3.6GHz 8-core Intel 9th Gen Core i9 CPU. RAM options go up to a maximum of 64GB. Storage options go up to a 2TB Fusion Drive or a 2TB SSD. GPU options include a Radeon Pro 570X with 4GB of video RAM, Radeon Pro 575X with 4GB of video RAM, Radeon Pro 580X with 8GB of video RAM, and Radeon Pro Vega 48 with 8GB of video RAM. News of the iMac’s refresh comes a couple of days after Apple silently launched the new iPads. The updated iPad Air and iPad mini come with a 9.7-inch Retina display and a 7.9-inch Retina display respectively. Both models employ Apple’s A12 Bionic chip. The iPad mini, which lacked stylus support until now, can finally be used with an Apple Pencil. The iPad Air starts at $499 in the US (and Rs 44,900 in India) while the smaller iPad mini starts at $399 in the US (and Rs 34,900 in India).   Related Read:  Apple quietly launches new iPad Air, iPad mini starting at Rs 34,900
