HMD Global plans to export Nokia phones made in India

Exporting devices can only be viable if Nokia starts to manufacture components in India. HMD Global, the brand that manufacturers Nokia smartphones plans to export Nokia units made in India. The company has reportedly initiated talks with Foxconn for exporting handsets manufactured in India. HMD Global’s vice president and Country Head of India, Ajey Mehta, told Economic Times that the company is exploring options to export both feature phones and smartphones to other countries. HMD Global plans to export India-made Nokia devices to all countries which are closer to India like Africa. Mehta said Nokia used to be a major exporting of devices from India back in its heydays. Since the company is now manufacturing almost its entire portfolio of devices in India, Mehta believes there is scope in exploring the option to export from India. By exporting en masse, HMD believes it can achieve a higher scale of local production and reduce overheads and other costs. However, Mehta said exports will only become viable if HMD Global starts manufacturing components in India. The company is in talks with Foxconn to get component suppliers to India. The company presently manufactures the PCBs and assembles the units in India. In just about two years, Nokia managed to become one of the top three feature phone makers in India with about 8.5-9 percent market share. The company’s smartphones has around 3.5-5 percent market share in India. Mehta said HMD Global will attempt to break into the top three smartphone manufacturers in 2-4 years.
